  • I had a soundesign AD Series LP AM/FM dual cassette player with ALC, kind of looks like this one but white. My KFAN, KSAQ, KTFM 1991 aircheck were recorded of these. I DX'd KHFI out of Austin in San Antonio back in 92 via Paragon Cable CATV line, and Austin's KEY 103.

  • My Soundesign turntable sound awful! It sounds a lot like your SD turntable and the pitch is slightly slower! I'm thinking about getting a new one... preferably a Sony... BIG difference in sound... the Sony sounds much more crisper and great! Why I used that Soundesign turntable for so long is beyond me!

  • Soundesign wasn't much in the 80's and 90's, but in the 70's they made some pretty good equipment!

  • Hi Mrtechguy! Great job on your video! I use to have a Soundesign stereo system in 1990. I don't have it anymore but, I've got a Sony stereo system. I also have the very same Sony turntable system in my videos. Please check it out, and tell me what you think! SONY ROCKS FROM JAPAN!!!!!!!!!

  • @Mrtechguy94 well tje soundesign uses the Turntable Sanyo Fisher ST-09 stylus ,this one for my taste the worse modern cartidge by the way why the heck ! did they build this shit when they have weight better suff! it does not have good low frequency responce and a lot of distortion on high frequency and also picks up a lot or most of the imperfections in the records , the Sony most likely uses the Audio technica at 3600 wich is one of the most common ,reliable , and decent sound quality ,

  • Unfortunately I have a similar soundesign stereo and it sounds better when you cut a mat and put it on the turntable. I am replacing it with an ION turntable I saw at radio shack!

  • Better speakers = Better sound

  • If you're impressed with that Sony turntable, then you need to hear the classic PS-X tables from the late '70s and early '80s. With a little searching on Ebay, you'll find something that is truly spectacular.

Better yet, head over to The Vintage Knob and read through the section on Sony turntables. The newer table you have is nice, of course, but a PS-X75 with the Biotracer arm will smash it to pieces.

    Thanks for sharing the video!

  • Soundesign didn't exactly go out of business. They merged with Zenith in 1993. Their parent company, SDI Technologies currently markets Playskool toys, iHomes, Timex, Sansa and Zune products.

  • Haha, I guess that explaines why Zenith products are all garbage today. I heard that many years ago they were like almost top of the line.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheBill35 didn't Zenith merged with LG?

  • @MrAlexprm LG bought Zenith , but i don{t know what happened with the merge of soundesign or ihome

  • Mrtechguy94, you can find an elliptical stylus for the Sony turntable. The factory stylus fitted on those Sony apparati has a conical tip.

  • Why bother getting an elliptical stylus?

If you are going to go that far, then invest in something better than a Sony PS-LX250 (which is actually an AudioTechnica clone).

  • Go and cry to vwestlife.

  • So you resort to that, eh?

    Grow up.

  • Waaaaaaaah!

  • Oh, so you're crying now?

Look. The Sony here is better than the Soundesign. But, it's not really that great of a table overall.

And your suggestion for an elliptical isn't good because adjustments are fixed on this model and may be optimal only for the ATN3600L conical stylus; use an elliptical (provided you can find one that'll fit) and it's possible that it won't sound as good and you risk damaging your records as tracking force, antiskating, and overhang may not be optimal for elliptical.

  • Stop crying. I am not the crybaby in this discussion. "Waaaah!"

Anyway, the latest Sony and Pioneer turntables do not fit the Audio-Technica ATN3600L needle. Consult vwestlife (a subscriber) and his 4-211-DE-Guard needle - it sounds quite impressive on a turntable made in the People's Republic of China!

You can also repent by subscribing to vwestlife and me!

  • "The latest Sony and Pioneer turntables do not fit the Audio-Technica ATN3600L needle."

Cross referencing and practical experience says they do (and they should as the PS-LX250 and the PL-990 are sourced from AudioTechnica and even shares internal parts with the AT-LP60).

Plus, the tracking force of those tables is around 3 grams.

The elliptical you reference states a range of 1.0-2.0g and there's no way to change the tracking force and anti-skating without modification.

    Repent to whom?

  • So?

  • Now, you can still get an elliptical to sound good with tracking force that's set too high.

The problem is that it will accelerate wear of the stylus and any records you play as an elliptical does not have as efficient a spread of this force as a conical does, which is why an elliptical stylus requires less tracking force in the first place.

  • vwestlife

  • Sounds more like you guys should repent to me.

I know what I'm talking about here.

And for you to question the importance of correct tracking force means that you don't understand anything more than using simple plug-n-play equipment.

Leave recommending things more advanced than that to those who really know.

  • Did you actually do what I wrote at all?

I think I am wasting valuable energy writing to you, or, you can subscribe to me. Next!

  • Second, if overhang isn't optimal for an elliptical, you introduce an unwanted wearout factor that will permanently damage records.

An elliptical is oval in profile. Correct overhang allows the stylus to ride in the groove straight and true.

Incorrect overhang means that the stylus will ride in the groove crooked, which means the groove walls of the record will endure excessive wear or even damage.

Use an elliptical and you should adjust for correct overhang using an overhang protractor.

  • Listen to the music posted on vwest1ife. Then write back to me.

  • Oh, listen to something that's already been altered by compression thanks to YouTube encoding and do so on less than optimal sound equipment (computer speakers).

Like that will tell me anything in detail.

  • No shit! For your last six posts, you are writing to me things I already know. So I could laugh until I kick the bucket (metaphorically)!

  • @SlimeTron5000

    Rubbish.

From what you've said up to this point, you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about and obviously what I've said is well beyond your experience and knowledge.

And now you're saying that you "owned" me?

You've not said even ONE thing that can counter any of my points and objections.

  • If you claim that I have "no clue what I am talking about", then why does my stereo system outlast in quality and integrity?

You see, if you fail to subscribe to my channel, you might lose your pseudo-intellectual - so do not miss out!

  • @SlimeTron5000

    What are you talking about?

    Are you arguing or advertising?

Perhaps I ought to mark your comment as a SPAM.

  • @SlimeTron5000

In addition, what do your videos show?

They don't tell me anything that's useful or anything that proves your point of a stereo that outlasts anything.

For instance, what are the specifics of your turntable?

Model and brand are all that I can ascertain (Realistic LAB-395).

What about its cartridge and its setup?

If anything, a good bit of your videos playing full songs risk being blocked in some or all regions or taken down due to copyright infringement.

  • Yawn. Crying from a pseudo-intellectual.

  • @SlimeTron5000

So, as usual, since you can't answer my questions, you resort to name calling.

  • Not really. I get bored of your pseudo-intellectuality. You probably buy that snake oil rubbish. It turns out Stupid is contagious after all.

  • @SlimeTron5000

I guess you're right about stupid being contagious.

I wasted my time with your stupidity, which I would guess is rather stupid of me, huh?

    Troll.

  • You lost. Deal with it.

  • @SlimeTron5000

    Lost what?

Whatever you want to believe, eh?

  • Of course, you never want to admit that you are wrong, and you are likely to cherry pick my subsequent scribes - so you are picking the most pointless and petty part of this entire discussion, to get what you consider a win. Of course, when I bring input, the 'troll hunt' begins. A witch!

    I enjoy YouTube.

  • You are a pseudo-intellectual, and stupid. Deal with them, too.

Evaluation: you only scribed things I already know, so you did not provide any progress into this discussion, or any answers to my wants, needs and necessities.

    pwned

  • @SlimeTron5000

Yet you can't explain your position or answer questions and objections nor will you clarify what you know and don't know.

Your declarations have little to no substance behind them.

And what is it with the name calling? Ever heard of being civilized?

  • Here we go again. Will you tell me your components (if you do have any)? Or, will you continue to delude and slow down the progress of this discussion.

Please, do not bring civility into this discussion. Like I give a fuck.

Now read this: tell me your components, and subscribe.

  • @SlimeTron5000

Being civilized is about being courteous. If you want to talk with others, then at least be nice.

    Nobody likes a jerk.

  • Civility is only a cultural aspect. At the end of the day, it is pointless. For all I care, humans should devolve backwards to meet their inner fifth ape.

You also advocate smokeless powder weapons, and you probably kill other creatures. Now that is civilized(!)

"Nobody likes a jerk." What a way to make my blood boil. Humans say this crap whenever they feel threatened, or their sense of selves are psychologically punctured. Like that "laugh and the world laughs with you" phrase. What shit!

  • @SlimeTron5000

Why bring my political thoughts into this?

Drifting off topic in an effort of one upping another?

As for guns, you have a right to defend yourself against another who may wish you to kill you for the simple fact that you alone are responsible for your own safety. Plus, any government that doesn't trust you with arms is dangerous because they don't have any reason to fear you.

Being able to stand up for yourself is civilized. Allowing those to trespass against you is not.

  • I can agree with smokeless powder weapons. Technically, unfortunately you would be depriving that life.

"...understand that a murderer acts to deprive life while a person who kills in defense acted to preserve life."

What? Paradox: one lives, one dies. A human process that is very old. At the end of the day, the human is for his / herself, not everybody else. That is how society works.

  • "Paradox: one lives, one dies."

The difference is that it's either you, a person who was minding his own business and didn't want any trouble in the first place, or him, a person who wanted to harm or kill you for nothing more than his own ambitions. It's no paradox as you fought to survive an act of deadly malice against you.

Sometimes, as a victim, you may be left with no choice but to kill to survive in violent situations. I hope you never have to make that choice, but you never know.

  • @SlimeTron5000

I told you my components, so how about yours?

And I don't subscribe to anyone.

  • "And I don't subscribe to anyone."

I can do two options with that statement.

    1) Believe you, or

    2) Doubt you, because there is a slippery slope - hiding your subscriptions.

  • @SlimeTron5000

Hey, whatever you want to believe.

Doubt me or believe me when I say I don't subscribe. I don't care in that case for the same reason why I never subscribe; I don't care to.

  • My father has a collection of rifles. I disagree of Australia's legislative Act against handguns.

On the other hand, the police also likes to be technical: the fact you killed a 'murderer' would make you a criminal, and you are taking the law into your own hands because the police do not like 'non-police' stealing their proprietary rights to enforce the law. This is the reason why people still go to gaol when they shoot robbers.

  • If you guys (SlimeTron5000 and Watcher3223) are arguing, could you please do it over PM's instead of arguing in comments to my video, lol. Thanks :-)

  • Comment removed

  • @Mrtechguy94

    Hey. I'll stop right now.

  • Self defense isn't taking the law upon yourself.

You fight to stop an immediate act of aggression against you when no other choice to escape exists. Nothing more than that.

The point is to keep others from hurting you, which unfortunately may include hurting or killing your adversary as a last resort if no other choice exists to escape.

As for the cops, you can't rely on them and they can't be everywhere. Call for help and you must wait for them, which means you're on your own until then.

  • That comes from natural justice.

  • @SlimeTron5000

    Argument is over.

"Mrtechguy94" has asked it to stop. Let it go because I will.

  • Plus, you did not tell me your components (if you have any components at all. Hic hic hic hic hic!).

  • @SlimeTron5000

    Sony PS-X600

Ortofon VMS-20 E aligned to Stevenson, 1g. tracking

    Sony STR-DA4ES class A/B receiver

Sony CDP-X229ES single well CD player

Sony TC-K707ES 3 head cassette deck

The Sony components are either mid-high to high end, with everything but the turntable from the ES line.

Optimus Mach Three 3-way speakers for stereo main.

  • @SlimeTron5000

So, why are the Sony and the Ortofon snake oil?

They work exactly as designed to and sounds good, just like your stereo may.

  • pwned

  • @SlimeTron5000

I'm sure you think so in your own world.

  • Look how fucking fragile the Sounddesign turntable deck is! But that would be absorbent to vibrations.

Nice channel. In my posts I show a Realistic LAB-395 in play.

  • Actually, the flimsy nature of the turntable would make it prone to resonance, which is bad, particularly if any vibration is ever sympathetic to the resonant characteristics of the chassis.

  • Okay.

  • In other words, you know how you can make something vibrate just by a loud enough sound of a particular pitch? That's sympathetic resonance.

An example: someone being able to break a wine glass with a high pitch sound.

You make the same pitch sound as that of the glass when you ding it and play it through the glass loud enough that it breaks.

Same idea on the turntable, though a different result: the resonance of the chassis can be received by the pickup, which can cause feedback distortion.

  • cheap garbage vs the real Stuff!!!

  • cheap garbage was onece more expincive than the "real Stuff!!!"

  • ya the belt sounds like it needs replacing

  • Like it matters. The Soundesign is so cheap that the belt is not even worth replacing.

  • That Sony turntable (and its many clones) certainly has excellent sound for its price. The Soundesign suffers from a cheap ceramic cartridge, which can never sound as good as a magnetic cartridge.
