@Kenttas pentax makes great cameras. Agree. Just didn't have any of the cameras you mention available when testing the K-x. Thanks for the suggestions, though.
my Pentax kx with firmware 1.02 and transcend 16gb class 10 is much much faster than that in the video, probably very closer to the Nikon in this video.
in no way are those camera's matched.. sorry but thats crap. I have a pentax kx and i've never noticed it as a major problem. If you have a nikon d700.. why buy the kx anyway?! some people..
@rosszillwood just to clarify, I am not stating the K-x has any major problems. Simply saying that with the press sample (i.e. not my own camera) tested, I was seeing a slight slow-down in write speed when using additional image settings.
I believe part of this has been addressed by Pentax in a firmware update after I did the review. Overall the K-x is a great camera offering more features for dollars compared to Canon/Nikon counterparts. See full review for more details (link in description)
They should be closely matched? One is almost four times the price of the other. Those are not closely matched.
I'm not complaining about any results or anything here, but saying a camera that's almost 1/4 of the price of the other should be closely matches makes no sense :P
If you use JPEG and a SanDisk Extreme III (20MB/ps), you can shoot until the card is full with K-x.
wow, great blog/test!! i havent seen any videos like this. great information that few are willing to do the work for such a great comparison and results!! keep it up!
if you do the software upgrade for the pentax,, it'll run faster,, probably faster than your D700... i have a pentax, and i can tell mine runs faster than yours with all the setting ON..
@john240881111 The K-x was just a press sample that I had to return, so I cannot do a re-test. Thanks for the head's up, though.
I still think that the marginal half a second the K-x is behind in the video is negligible in real-life shooting conditions. Does the firmware update also speed up in-camera processing time for HDR and filters?
@klausboedker When I bought mine, it already had the firmware update, but from what I've heard, the firmware was required to improve the battery life. Battery life is actually quite good, (I'm using Sanyo Eneloops, but the stock disposable batteries lasted eons). I'm not sure what other benefits the firmware addressed.
Nice comparison very helpful, but really 95/100 times i can spare the extra 1/3 of a second and when you consider price its a no brainner, still i get your point , its helpful thanks.
@almolinet the video is part of my follow-up review of the Pentax K-x. In the first review, the writespeed was horribly slow, but with input from Pentax I did a second look at the camera and changed some in-camera settings significantly speeding up the write time. Check the full review link in the video description (sorry, youtube doesn't allow links in comment field).
pentax are very good camera, please compare next time d7k and k-5, you will be surprised how pentax is silent a,how fast and how well made

Wow, what a fair comparison. Professional camera (using a CF card) vs. a super-entry level camera using an SD card.

@xSushiWarriorx eh! are you seeing something i am not? the close match speaks in pentax' favor. see full review more details.
klausboedker 1 year ago
@klausboedker It doesn't matter if it is in the Pentax's favour, I think a MUCH more fair comparison would be a T1i or D5000 (or even a D3000).
