  • That thing is a beast!

  • 8 cylinders and a mullet... what more is there to say?

  • those flames gonna put import V12s to shame

  • @XLR8OR100 This engine can be tuned to 1200 H.P @ 1200 RPM's. So torque is 5252 LBS. that's also @ 100% duty cycle!!!!

  • 850hp @ 123000 ft lb's of torque

  • ahh the smell of hydrocarbon in the morning... yum!

  • What does it power ? Generator - water pump ?

  • @magna59 water pump

  • now thats a V8 !!!

  • @DerTrabant This is a inline 8 cylinder.

  • @pileofiron

mmm this is strange, this text I typed in a Perkins V8 movie on You Tube.

But this 8-inline is nice to, + a great sound ;)

  • @pileofiron can you put this in my Hyundai preus?

  • Tie Al Gore in a chair & make him watch that puppy run.

He'd be so shattered he'd pass away from the drizzlin' sh*ts.

  • That dude looks like Kieth Stone!! Your so smooth!

  • Only a hilbilly

  • A very cool Engine. I like it

  • For what is this engine??

  • @taschentuch1948 Boat Google 83 footer

  • But will it blend?

  • thats a cool engine never seen one with 32 spark plugs

  • displacement?

  • @CBKillas 3619 cu. in.

  • @pileofiron Well now, that's a big boy! Where do I get one? lol

  • Indoor Exhaust :-D

  • And that my friends is what make's the world rotate

  • i wonder how many female views this vid has had. lol ^^

  • do you think i could fit that in my civic?

  • @danthemanzizzle If you get it going fast enough it would fit anywhere!!! Fred

  • Well at least it didn't end up at the wrecker.I am glad to see one of those alive...

  • I suggest cutting a hole in the ceiling.. or something. Cool engine though. Does it backfire much?

  • I wonder what the fuel consumption of this engine is at maximum power... o_O

  • its a sterling engine made in buffalo ny according to one website. this would make one hell of a puller engine

  • nice engine, wouldn't fit in my audi though haha its a beautiful beast though nice vid

  • how many gallons per mile? hahaha

  • How many gallons per mile does it get?

  • vent that beast outside!

  • @Aerozine50 Yes it is one of 2 engines in the 83 footer.. I don't really know what it was designed to run of of but this one runs of of 87 octane gas.

  • Nice sound! ;)

  • can you hear me?

  • Nice, but you seriously need to vent that exhaust. That beast will kill ya pretty quick.

  • Do they make a motor mount kit to drop that into my Camaro? I wonder if it has the right bolt pattern for my TH350? Might have to use some heavier springs!!!!

  • how many $ to fire that thing up ?

  • i put one of these in my jeep. now its the strongest vehicle ever. too bad that it's too heavy to move.

  • Every man should have one in his garden or,even better,in his living room.I hate to htink of the consumption though. Thanks for the film.Very impressive.

  • have fun dying of cancer in that shed of yours....

  • @danthemanzizzle Hey Thanks!!! Fred

  • @danthemanzizzle Or carbon-monoxide poisoning!

  • @Tonyhenthorn heck ya!

  • @danthemanzizzle

    What a pointlessly unpleasant comment.

Pileofiron, loving that beast, sounds great!

  • @charlieflint just trying to bluntly point out that inhaling black sut and fumes from a big ol diesel is hazardous to his health and in some cases the particles and molecules found in diesel exhaust can lead to bodily failure which is = to death.

  • @danthemanzizzle

Fair play fella, I'd have to admit it's not the healthiest environment to breathe in! I guess as long as he doesn't do it too often it's not 'too' bad, though an extractor exhaust would be very preferable to say the least!

  • @danthemanzizzle this is a gasoline engine the 32 odd spark plugs and 4 or so carbs should be a massive clue if you still cant work that out you need to quit the game

  • 0:45 O_O

Enough torque to twist the engine on that equally impressive stand!

  • that thing is a beats o.o

  • here's a stupid question: torque?

  • @ionsunteu Not stupid!!! This engine can be tuned from 250 H.P. to 1200 H.P. @ 1200 rpm's. At 1200 H.P. it is developing 5252 LBS of torque!!!

  • @pileofiron

Planning to change the rotation of the earth I see.

  • @pileofiron 5K+ foot pounds is all well and good, but what kind of mileage do you get?

  • @pileofiron I'm curious. By tuned to increase horsepower, what do you mean? Surely there isn't a horsepower knob.

  • @TDIAWD Since Phillips bought Sterling they modified the engines. Removed a couple spark plugs and installed electronic ignition maybe a turbo and other things. This info came from a person that worked on these engines for Phillips.

  • god this sounds very angry and loud! wonder what the air quality is in there?

  • I need one of these engines for a pulling tractor.

  • nice !!! now build it in mr beans mini cooper *grin*

  • it's a music!

  • ultra brutal! beautiful sound!

  • Holly Fucking Shit!!!! That is a machine!! Beautiful sound!

  • Why doesn't Jay Leno have one of these in a car yet?

  • googled it. an engine for a small ship or like those large fishing tour boats at the coast. cool sound

  • hell yeah, 5 feet per gallon.

  • I wanna hear this thing run wide open!!! :)

  • What was it for originally?

  • @ConRWD Google "83 footer"

  • What is this engine used for ?

  • @chestybondrod Google "83 footer"

  • @pileofiron that's pretty cool

  • Comment removed

  • Of course where else would you put a LOUD mf-er like that but in a

    TIN SHED?!

  • @4freespeech I thought everyone knew, you put loud engines in tin sheds so the tin can absorb the sound and not echo very loud. :)

  • I always think of how much fuel these must blow through at $2.85 per gallon.

I worked on some very large old fishing boats on the Chesapeake Bay years

ago that had engines similar to this and they burned LOTS of fuel. But that

wasn't as big a concern in those days. It was "WILL IT RUN?"

  • great way to kill urself in the fumes lol

  • now i want this in my peterbilt!

  • bugati no big deal the engine is 2 v8s from vw put togather 4,2 litter times 2.

  • This guy's gonna melt a hole in his ceiling...

  • hahaha... running a little rich

  • That kind of sounds like an EMD 645 (16 cylinder 645 ci 3800 hp at some where around 1200 rpm

  • 0:24 is that a backfire?

  • @marcelomar2 Sure looks like a little back fire comeing out of the 2nd carb!!!

    Good eye...

  • should put it in a bulldozer

  • is it a Tank engine??

  • @unclewilly2 No, this engine is a Sterling and was supposed to go into a submarine. They were used in a boat 83 footer. You can google 83 footer and you can read about it. This engine actually was used to pump water for Danville, ILL.

  • @unclewilly2 tank's are powered by jet engines now days =)

  • i love such monster machines they are so "monster"^^

how much capacety have this sweethart^^

  • wow cool

but it is pretty heavy, meh i like the sound of it

  • lol cool engine but isint it lacking horsepower, probably has a shitload of torgue but modern engine have 650 -1000hp easy, yea i know its old

  • @juliman14

This engine can produce 1200 H.P. at 1200 RPM's. That is at 100 % duty cycle. That's 5252 lbs torque. Your car engines almost idle that fast and can only produce h.p. at several thousand RPM's for short periods at a time.

  • @pileofiron Each gasoline engine was an in-line eight cylinder, four stroke (cycle) with eight inch bore, nine inch stroke, a displacement of 3619.1 cubic inches, and developed 600 HP @ 1,200 RPM taken from

  • @pianoshredder89

    googled it

  • @pianoshredder89 That is correct.. I have been in touch with a person that worked on these and they had upgraded some of these that are still in use by Phillips Petroleum. Installed electronic ignition with 2 plugs per cylinder and changed the carbs. They can tune these from 250 H.P. to 1200 H.P. @ 100% duty cycle. Depending on the job and economy they need.. Thanks for posting... Fred

  • @pileofiron ah ok still an amazing piece of motor.

  • goood!

  • @pileofiron

     lol :)

Interesting video bro i was just joking my friend!

  • up in smoke!!

    exaust inside the garage.. R.I.P..

  • Hey, That's the fun part!!!!

  • why so menny spark plugs, carbs and coils?! haha sweet engine! love the sound!

  • Because of the large volume of the cylinders. If you notice it has 64 sparkplug wires and 2 distributors of a dual ignition for the 32 sparkplugs...

  • Use metrics please.

  • Over 60 liter displacement ..and weight is 6400 kg.

  • @pileofiron what did that thing go to?

  • @Thejackel4012 It was originally built for

a boat called: 83 footer, You can google it.

This particular engine pumped water for

    the city of Danville Ill.

  • hey for an old girl it runs damn good!

  • displacement??

  • 3619 cu. in.

  • so what was it built for?

  • PT boats, Google 83 footer

  • ok thanks

  • this is diesel?

  • No, this is a gasoline engine!!

  • o ya 3/32 of a mile per gallon

  • Now, that's big block! :D

  • imma put a engine like that in my mini

  • Man what a beast ! Awsome!

  • WOW

  • Heard of carbon monoxide?

  • AHHH yes, the wonderful sweet smell of unburnt hydrocarbons!!!

  • would it fit a morris minor, that's what i want to know, if not then scrap it.

  • yeah morris minors rock! i got 2 of that im restoring

  • is that like a tug boat engine or something? what is it used for?

  • is that a sterling viking?

  • Yes it is a Sterling... Google "83 footer"

  • Awesome!!

  • wut the hell was that motor out of exactly

  • 2 of these went into a boat. google 83 footer

  • Could I have that for a hot rod project? Wouldnt that be a beast.

  • If you can move it and get it in the car I think it is your's!!!! It weights 14,000 lbs.

  • 850hp> what the tourqe tho :)

  • 3720 lbs of torque. This engine can be tuned to 1200 H.P. at 100% duty cycle. If tuned to that the torque is 5252 lbs.

  • a lot of PT boats were also fitted with the 903ci cummins v8 diesel

  • that thing is the fucking apocalypse

  • Please wear ear protection sir

  • Nah, it's just easier to turn down the volume!!

  • what the hell is this thing used for?

  • google 83 footer

  • lol I like how the exhaust isn't vented out of the building. CO poisoning, anyone?

  • Thats what I was thinking and straight through exhaust would be as loud as fuck with no hearing protection

  • I was hoping no one already posted that. I wanted to so bad!

  • should there be a big window open because it doesn't look healthy

  • Yeah, you know this all started with someone saying "Hey Y'all, watch this!"

  • twin distributors that is unique just like the very large updraft carburetors i bet it just chugs the gas but it runs nice and that is raw power!!!!!

    Jake wells

  • If you notice each distributor has 32 sparkplug wires. It is a dual ignition in case one would fail!

  • Think I said this before and I will say it again....Fucking awesome throttle response.

  • Wow, impressive. What is that like an old F-head or something? Biggest 4 stroke I've ever seen! And is that a water line running to the top of it? I'm guessing it's design was for marine use? Awesome

  • CO is in the house...

  • That is absolutely one of the most awesome engines I have ever watched in a video.

  • OoooHHH!!!

    MmmmYYYYyyyyy GOD!!!!!!!!

    VERY NICE!

  • was that a flame that came out the carbs

  • running just a lil rich XD

  • 850hp, God provides the torque

  • it sucks that a v8 can make just over 1000 in drags

  • This engine can be tuned to over 1200 H.P. and still only run a 1200 rpm's. That is at 100% duty cycle.

  • its just hp, hp is work done over time, more rpms = more hp. who needs hp when you have torque.

  • what the hell is that suppose to power?

  • Google 83 footer and it will take you to a site on PT boats. This particular engine pumped water for the city of Danville Ill. The current owner has paperwork were it was originally slated to be 1 of 2 that were supposed to go into a submarine.

  • now that is a big block

  • what is that?

  • Just a big gasoline engoien.

Google 83 footer for more info

  • As I know you are trying to protect it from the elements, you might wish to consider extending the exhaust through the roof as to prevent all that well... pollution! (And soot stain on your ceiling of your shed.

  • It is quite likely an F-head type, similar to the transition engines Jeep had between flat head ahd overhead valve - they put the exhaust valve in the head, and intake valve in the block as it appears here, or in the Jeep from 1943 to 1962 it had the intake overhead and exhaust in the block. This type of engine has a smaller combustion chamber than a flat head and developes better compression and has less fresh fuel charge lost out the exhaust because the valves are not adjacent to each other

  • He is trying to kill himself with the fumes.

  • monster!!

  • Wow very cool.. Great throttle response on that thing...Sounds like a big block on super steroids...Great post man.. I really appreciate seeing something like that and it being in that good of shape...It sounds awesome...Thanks again :)

  • You are right!!! It sounds like a full race cam. I supose it is souped up because it was originally supposed to go into a PT Boat. The PT boat had 2 of these engines and about 1900 gals. of gas. You can google" 83 footer" for more info.

  • This is the first time I have seen one that big and not be diesel,

  • as far as i can see, it looks like a 2 stroke. am i right?

Great great engine. and nothing better than the smel of unburnt fuel from an old engine ;-)

  • It is a four stroke gasoline engine.

  • how does it "Look" like a 2 stroke....

  • the carbs are located under the exhaust, so it would technically possible that the carbs are connected to the crankcase ;)

  • Ahhh, i see. Good call haha

  • This engine was made primarily for marine use. I have found out they did use these in the PT boats. So it has a water cooled exhaust. It also has up draft carbs. May look a little confusing. Good eye!!!! I have also talked to a person that worked on these and he says the engine can be tuned from 250 H.P. to over 1000 H.P. at 100% duty cycle. If you would like to see more on this engine google "83 footer".

  • Ah I understand, updraft carbs, and i think its an flathead engine. tomorrow i wil go seach it on google ;-)

  • No its not, second time wrong. on the pictures in the ship i see the rokker covers, little bit confusing.

  • Not wrong, your just trying to fiqure it out. Me too!!

  • It is indeed an impressive " pileofiron ", sorry I don't share your enthusiasm for the smoke. Thank's for the video anyway.

  • I do appreciate your views and understand your concern for safety. Some time when you want to have fun safety goes secondary as you take risks. Dirt bikes, go carts, skate boarding, extreme games, yes you take precautions but there is still the element of danger. This is a hobby and this engine is only run one weekend a year at a show in western Indiana. I'm glad they at least hve it out of the elements. Thanks for your comment and keep posting, Fred
