Part of Obama's victory was because there were so many nationalist racists and bigots who publicly spoke for McCain and the republican party. This was terribly frightening for voters to think that if they voted R they'd be supporting racist ideals and doctrine. Reagan did some things right, he did pose a very strong stance against the Soviets when it was needed. But his economics plans were questionable and were meant for their time (some Republicans tend to forget this - it's not the 1980's anymore) but his military campaigns in Central/South America were bullshit.
