Well, if you want your damage higher, you should get some equips. You can make a lukless and just use a level 8 wand the rest of your career, it doesn't matter. You don't HAVE to be funded.

yes, you need to make the 3rd job advancement and dont worry, i just died because i wasn't paying attention. you get a quest item that is required to advance to the third job.
