Energizer commercials seemed so watered down and unmemorable—that is, until ol' floppy-ears-beatin'-the-drum showed up. They had to really think up something to rival Duracell's iconic three-note-chime, battery cap "metal cage door" slam.

I still have one of these "early 80's" D cell Energizer in a drawer with some power left in it. The "Energizer Bunny" advertisement campaign did not start until three years later. It is believed to this date that the "Bunny" is still running on its original set of batteries from 1989

I think they redesigned the battery for much of its current look when they brought the Australian guy along a year later. The only change they made externally for the bunny was changing the "Energizer" font (and making it mixed-case instead of all caps) and it's been 13 years since they did that.
