Riane Eisler in her book The Chalice & The Blade, describes "Partnership" Cultures that worshiped Goddess Deities and were not rigidly hierarchical. What happened is that these cultures were oppressed and destroyed by Dominator cultures that were hierarchical, materialistic, male-dominated, and worshiped the blade. Do we place a higher value on the power that gives life (The Great Mother), or on the power that takes life (The Blade)? No doubt, our culture is a violent, death-worshipping culture!
