Removing server and workstation did not work for me. My Generic Host error message will usually appear within a minute of boot-up. Sometimes 30 minutes. One time, I ran my pc all night with no error message. It's random. At first it would take out my sound and my internet. It would also change my default xp toolbar to a windows 98 toolbar. Then it would draw a horizontal black bar at the file, edit, view window . I've spent a lot of time researching this. Nothing works. Sigh. Reformat.

1 - press Microsoft+R

2 - in the popup window with the command line to type text "msconfig" and press' OK ';

3 - go to the tab 'Services' and remove the checkmark from the items 'Server' and 'Workstation', then also press' OK ';
