  • btw, your amazing! the was perfectly done :)

  • @korvidkrow96 Thank you :) I hope your new pipa is working fine now :)

  • i just bought my first Pipa (i can't afford a really good one so i bought a $200 one off eBay), and im also having problems with my string action. im thinking, maybe, i should cut the slots that the strings sit in (at the headstock and the bridge) deeper so it makes the action lower. Ive done that to one of my acoustic guitars before.. it worked, but i dont want to accidentally screw it up D: wish me luck!

  • How much of this is also dance music?

  • Thank you for sharing! I'm trying to learn this song but don't really know the whole melody. Now I can sort of figure out myself and not rely so much on my instructor. :D I can never get the part which goes 66 1221 (pulling the string) though :/

  • @yijun21 you are welcome. I hope you can get the string bending part soon.

  • Hey, I'm just wondering how high the action of your strings is? I recently got a pipa and I feel like the strings are set rather high, but I'm not sure if that is more or less how it is supposed to be. Any insights?

  • @canboarder Do you mean the strings feel tensed on the fingers or?

  • @wanwanpipa I'm just used to playing other instruments that, in the best scenario, have the strings very close to either a fingerboard or fret board....on my pipa i have to push them down farther and harder than i would on other instruments, just wondering how close the strings would be to what i know as frets, i'm afraid i'm not sure of the proper term for them if there is a different one.

  • @canboarder I see what you mean.... unfortunately that really depends on the way the pipa was made. the two that i have aren't very difficult to press, but thats very subjective, so I would suggest you tell the store about what happened and try the other pipas that they have and find one that feels good in your hands.

  • @wanwanpipa You're quite right about the subjectivity, unfortunately it was a gift I am unable to take back, but hopefully I can come up with something to help remedy the situation. Thanks for the imput.

  • @canboarder You are welcome, i hope you find a solution soon.

  • @wanwanpipa I am having the same problem and just suspect I bought a piece of decoration. I have another question maybe you could help me with. I am 6"3' and have a long torso. Holding the pipa correctly is impossible, trying is extremely uncomfortable as my head reaches the tunning pegs. I need to find a way to raise the pipa as it sits in my lap. You might think I'm too big to play this instrument but I have small nimble hands for my size and would really like to try playing this instrument.

  • @Vlaxitov There are pipa for children that are smaller than regular pipa, just make sure yours is a regular one. I haven't encountered anyone with that problem, so I am not sure what to do really, sorry about that :-/ The thing that guitarists use to raise the guitar maybe helpful. Good luck.

  • @wanwanpipa Yeah its adult size. It has to be around 3 feet tall from base to top. If I held it like you are in this video, the very top fret is at eye level for me. Have you ever met someone over 6 feet tall who plays it? I didn't know there was something that would lift a guitar to a higher position as it sits in my lap. I'll check into it, thank you. BTW, you're one of the best players I've seen online.

  • @Vlaxitov I haven't met anyone like that (most pipa players I know aren't very tall, but I am sure there are players who are over 6 feet tall....) I hope you found a solution.

  • are they any music stores in the U.S that sells Chinese instruments?

  • I am sure there is one, but I think its better to check with the local chinese community for a chinese orchestra or band.

  • ok thanx =D

  • This store isnt in the us, but its where I always order from, try eason enterprises or shoppingchinanow, google em. very good places to buy!

  • k thanx :D

  • how is this awesome instrument tuned?

  • It's A2 D3 E3 A3 (from lowest to highest)

  • Hey!!! I was wondering if anyone could tell me where I could get a pipa!!!?!? I am dying to have one and I can not find it anywhere. I am in toronto canada

  • Is there any Chinese Music store? There are some Pipa player based in Canada. *I believe Liu Fang is living in Canada.* Besides finding the pipa player, also check with the Chinese Orchestras there. They probably help people buy Chinese instruments too.

  • did you looked at onlineshops?? maybe there are some. but if you buy it from china, it takes many weeks until you have it.

  • it is ver amazing!!!!!! pipa is one of my favourite instrument!!!

i listened to lui fang - dance of yi tribe, and you play as well as her!!!

  • thank you:)

  • very awesome!

  • thanks:)

  • this piece of yours made me realize that true essence of a sensible being can express itself to almost its fullest extent through vibration of strings and flow through any conceivable medium to touch another sensible being to vibrate in the same frequency.

I pray (to that "true" essence) that the bond and connection of you and your beloved doesn't get changed ever irrespective of your forms and surroundings.

  • thank you :)

  • 這是很累人的曲子^^

    樓主彈得不錯

    但感覺上有點壓抑

  • thanks :)

  • tho I have commented before, I still wanna say this again when I watch this every time : SO PRO!

  • Thank you very much :)

  • Sounds so close to Wu Man

  • thank you:)

  • AMAZING !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you :)

  • 彈的真好聽

  • 謝謝你:)

  • So marvelous! I feel myself flying in the fantasy world of ancient China.

  • thank you:)

  • this is epic

  • Thanks:)

  • :) nice to meet you

  • i listen the original song everytime i sleep :X:X:X:X:X:X:

  • u mean the two folk songs this piece is based on?

  • This is my favorite song on the pipa...you've played it the best too

  • You are very Good!!!!!!!! make a CD I think!

  • brilliant ... was wondering ... i've heard the full orchestral version of this music ... but i cant seem to find it online though .. any ideas???

  • Thank you,

Oh actually I dunno abt the full orchestral version. I only know there are versions which are the soloist accompanied by the orchestra.

I saw two on youtube, one of them whichs uploaded by user bossa is in the related videos list.

  • hey i learning tis song too . whr did eu learn tis song? nice vid too ;D

  • thx, i learnt from my teacher in HK

  • Thx, well I am sorry but I don't really know any website like that. And its kinda hard to just order by looking at the picture, coz what make a pipa a good one is its sound really.... Try to see if there are any chinese musicians around (especially like those playing in orchestras) I know the one up in LA does take orders from ppl to buy chinese instruments from China, they are probably "safer" than just ordering on website

  • Hey, who is your teacher in southern calif?

  • I haven't found myself a pipa teacher in southern cali yet. I know there are teachers up in LA, but thats too far from me=.=''

  • Good Performance!!

This song is amazing!! I would like make a transcription and play it in guitar. Do you have the score?. Thanks

  • Thanks, I don't really have a soft copy of this score in my computer, and the hard copy i have is for pipa *the open strings different and i guess the chords different too* But I think some guitar books actually have the score for guitar, hope you can find one soon.... sorry I can't be of much help

  • Thanks for the answer. I just have a score for guitar but I am looking for the pipa´s score to make the transcription by myself.

  • may i ask how you do "lun" without hitting the other strings. it's still so hard for me. i have trouble with it. :\

  • it can be caused by many different reasons, like the position of your (fore)arm or the position of fingers. I saw your video, the first thing you gonna do is to slow down your "lun", and try to hit the string with each of your fingers slowly and clearly, it can be hard at first, but keep doing it for a few month, you will see the improvement.

My advice is find a real teacher=.='', or really try to imitate the way the guy in the video plays the pipa. bad playing posture can hurt your fingers

  • Your like too good!! ^_^ Wish i cld play like tht!! I only have a few pipa books and none have this song :( ...Though I still seem to be having problems when playing the wheel (five fingers).. *_* xx

  • Thanks, oh I hope you can find the score of this music soon...It takes a long time to be able to play a nice "wheel", I still have problem with mine too/.\

  • great video!

  • thank you:)

  • OH. MY. WORD. WOW. OH MY WORD. =speechless=... i wish i could play like that O_O;; how did you learn? teacher? self-taught??? you practise a lot right? =3 i wanna learn that piece! ;_; where did you get the music for it from, may i ask? ^^;; xxx

  • I learnt it from my teacher years ago, I used to practise a lot, but now im always busy with school work. I got the score from pipa bks, this is a famous piece, most pipa teaching materials do have the score of this music. I hope you can find it:)

  • grrr my previous comment wouldn't post for some reason ¬_¬;; anyways, wow... i see! the piece looks really hard tho! i self taught so i don't know loads of the pipa notations :( is it a hard piece? x_x;; (i also don't have many pipa books so i don't think i have it x_x) xxx

  • This piece isn't very hard in fact(Grade 5 or 7 in most music conservatory), but pay more attention to the beat and the pitch (as you may hear, I also have those problems in this playing, my D5 is always flatted, and I kind of lost control when I was doing the main melody's tremelo (Lun zhi), so the beat fluttered. Also my 16th notes were not clear enough.) Aww, I dun have a soft copy of this score in my computer, so sorry and good luck....
