  • Hi! I am thinking of teaching in Korea for one year but I get homesickness really bad and really quickly. How do you deal with being so far from your home and family?

  • go back to us and get a Big Mac fatty!!!

  • I agree, it is important to make bonds with people and get connected

  • you think that's culture shock! check out the videos of my hagwon! culture electrabuzzed!!!

  • After having spent 6 years living in Asia and teaching in Japan and Korea, my cultrure shock happened when I came back to America........holy crap look at all these huge fat people!!!

  • This is a great video

  • you are truly truly pathetic...quit your whining, if you want REAL culture shock go to the poorest part of capetown.

  • Most of the time when people stare at you and whisper to each other, they mostly ask each other how well their english studies are coming up like,

"oh btw, hows your english doing?"

"not good enough to talk to him/her."

so dont take it too seriously

  • I think , Korea 's a first country you have ever been right, Honey !!! it happen all the time when you are in the abother not - english speaking country !

    Get over it !!

  • stupid

you're trying to copy the others style of vlog

    but yours is pathetic

    let it go

  • And by the way, Canada isn't separate from America, it's a part of North America. You mean the States.

  • Canada IS a separate country though - yes it is in North America but it is separate from AMerica.

  • @Ecossaise America is a whole continent, you idiot!! learn geography!

  • @rerikm sweet chatter - there is North America and then South America which are two different continents divided by oceans. I have taken geography - thanks for asking. I'm not here to start arguments and will not stoop to your level. However, thanks for taking 8 months to respond to my comment by the way. Well done. Whereabouts in the world do you live then?

  • @Ecossaise America is a whole continent, you idiot!! learn geography!

  • Did you think they speak English in Korea? Wow, they really don't tell you about the "rest of the world" in schools, huh?

  • Why do you travel if you want it to be just like home? Welcome to the minority world in America! Did you really think all you would see are caucasians and all the signs in english in korea? Next time just stay in the US and just visit Korea Town. That's the only way you'll be in your comfort zone!

  • um that really wasn't a culture shock

what you talked about is more like how you feel in a foreign country, not culture shock.

  • It would of helped if you would of like maybe studied korean, before you got there.

    Duh.

  • GET OUT...GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY YANKEE>>>bitch

  • that happens to every person when you go to a foreign country. well there are a lot of foreigners in south korea so you are probably not alone.

  • koreans who go to america to settle and live there have to deal with a lot more than you do. so you shouldn't be complaining because at least you have it easier -- there are english signs and american culture everywhere, and you get respect just for the fact that you are caucasian and speak english. you should know that you are lucky that you have it a lot easier.

but i'll give you one advice. the best way to understand korean culture is to live with koreans.

  • This is complete non-sense. Because of a facile stereotype of the "korean" experience in America, one ought to avoid complaining because of the pain of the other. Lets not ask causes why they experience pain, no it is time to be morally prescriptive.

The rest of this post is such bunkum and reminds me of typical "unbearable surplus enjoyment of the other" that is common over there.

  • the amount of desire one feels necessary to complain in a certain situation has everything to do with how bad of a position one thinks one is in. the videomaker apparently thinks she goes through so much when it really isn't compared to foriegner having to get used to US. it's called "whining"

  • I'm assuming you've lived in Korea as a Caucasian foreigner for at least a year? Otherwise your comparison is without substance and naive.

Your definitions are scholastic and useless. In other words you said "we desire to complain when we see a bad situation." A desire to do something and the election to do it, are not synonymous.

  • @iranjackheelson well said

  • wow!! u r such a nob!!!!

  • Another American English teaching cow in Korea. God I'm never going back to America. Thanks for the incentive

  • get out of Korea we deont want u here u white bitch

  • rubbish, what was the point in that....?

  • thank you for this.

  • you

    are

    so

    dumb

    please stop posting videos

  • I'd love to live in korea for a year to see what it's like, I have only lived in Iran and England, frankly I am sick of England, if it wasnt for my education I would force my parents to go back to Iran, but I am in high school, then I want to go to University, so that would kind of mean the end of a good career for me.

  • hope one day u can have a video with friends~ ^^

    this was good~ ^^

i didnt get a culture shock..coming from asia to uk...coz i was here when i was like...4!! xD then i went back then i cam back when i was 14!! yup! 10 YEARS!! xD

  • same here i dont get it.. I lived in Korea for like 6 years..from the UK.. after 3 months I was speaking Korean, and adjusting to the culture...1 year later im working in jobs that they never give westerners.. and totally fitting in....maybe its just me.!

  • Nice video! My husband and I taught English in a city in China in which we and another ESL teacher from England were the only white people. I didn't think it would matter, until we drew crowds everywhere we went-laughing, pointing, It was hard for me to get past, I am not the kind of person who likes the spot light. I thought I must look like a FREAK!!! I got big time culture shock! You've got to have a sense of humor. When I started to laugh about it, I got past it.

  • I was more culture shocked coming back to the U.S. after teaching in Busan for a year.

  • in the past i have never really seen foreigners in seoul much. but these days it's become more common than i ever thought it would. almost everywhere i go i always see a handful of foreigners.

i'm korean but i always feel insecure because i am not fluent so i just speak english. i used to get stares but now no one really cares. haha. at least that's how it is in seoul. dunno bout other cities. T__T and you're right bout interacting with others around you. or else you're screwed. :o

  • just messin witcha hahaha

  • Articulate, non?

  • You moron

  • i hope your time in Korea becomes better. I used to live there and had a great time but I understand its extremely difficult at first for foreigners. most english teachers i knew there did have a great time, but usually had korean buddies who could speak english or another language. i remember one time i said something in english to my friend in korea, and everyone in the restaurant stared at me. O_O but even so, i noticed that us koreans do stare a lot. growing up, it seemed so commonplace..

  • Hey, thanks for the message! Actually, my time here has been amazing. I haven't actually dealt with culture shock that much, but I did this video because many of my close friends have. My experience with Korea has been quite unique, in that it began to feel like home to me really quickly. I'm actually learning the language now, as my current plan is to be here for at least 5 years. ^_^ Again, thanks so much for the message!

  • I completely understand what you say.

I face the same problems here. But i never really let small things get to me.If i allowed that to happen..i mean get angry every time someone stares at me i walk away...act like i don't see them.
