@egglooke erm well check that steam isn't being blocked by your firewall as that might be causing some problems, also id suggest asking the steam technicians themselves as they have much better knowledge on issues with steam than i do. If it pursists and you cant find a way to fix it, just try reinstalling it.
I recently downloaded Steam for Mac and since I'm more of a fan of a gamepad than a keyboard, does anyone have any suggestions for a gamepad compatible with the Mac? Specifically, Steam (Portal, Half Life 2, etc..) or at least something that has software that allows me to map keyboard keys to the buttons on the gamepad. Your suggestions are most appreciated!
@marvelunivers well if you have a wired xbox 360 controller lying around then i would have to suggest using that. You will need to install some drivers for it though, just remember that this will only work for the wired xbox 360 controller. Just search around on google for xbox 360 controller drivers for mac, should find them. Or if you happen to have a ps3 controller, i aint sure but i believe that they work without needing any drivers installed, but dont take my word on that. Hope i helped.

It dosnt take that much getting used to. i played all of half life, episode 1, and episode 2 through using a keyboard though. That being the first time that i had used a keyboard for gaming and found that after a while it does become quiet simple, just takes a bit of getting used too.
On the Mac version on my MBP 2010 i7 I get lowest 40 fps but mostly 70 - 100fps with everything on high but the anti alias is either disabled or only 2x. Resolution is 1152x700 or somthing along the lines of that.
HL2 deathmatch works nicely as well didn't get a framerate but very smooth at 1600x1050 with all high. (Also lost coast)
sorry not a clue, but i put everything up to high settings just to see how well it could deal with it and it did surprisingly well. When i was playing i didn't notice any frame skipping so im gonna imagine that it has a pretty reasonable fps rate.
I have ~50-70fps at max settings 4X MSAA (1.93 GHz core2duo, 9600gt, 4GB ram) but the Source Engine will get optimizations anyway, so it will runs well. they working on it. css probably next month...

if you are recording with screenflow, the framerate is very low. but when you aren't recording, the framerate increases.
in my mac, this is normal when I record with screenflow

The framerate you get while recording is probably lower than what you would have otherwise, but I'm glad it runs well.
