If you render using mental ray or VRay, you can render out a z-depth pass at the same time as your normal image and do the depth of field in After Effects. This allows you to do rack-focus shots simply by messing around with a few keyframes in After Effects.

I use 3D max/maya and something as simple as a daylight system with Mental Ray as your render and final gather makes any low poly model look nice
