Many people look at this and get turned off from Karate because anyone can see that this is not the way to protect themselves. Why waist time practicing techniques that will not work? Kata training can be very beneficial for hand eye coordination and worming up. Only when the person is taught the true meaning of the movements will he/she benefit from the self defense aspects within the kata. Here are two clues: There are no blocks in kata, only attacks. Most techniques are tuite waza.
@BuJitsu4life Karate schools have bad training because most are based on 19. century pe school program, aka watered down karate. I personaly found that blocks do work and can be used in self defense and against trained fighters. Of caurse you have to be good and know how to use them realisticaly and blocks can be used as ofense as well as you said. But most people think they are going to wait in a stance until someone attacks them and then block when they see whats comming and thats impossible.
@BuJitsu4life Katas should be taught with the true meaning of the techniques from the begining. To say there are no blocks in kata only shows your ignorance(watch the video again and you will see several blocks)
@dtotrajan Hello my friend, this is Bujitsu4life. Apparently the person posting this video did not like what I had to say so he/she has attempted to keep me from commenting any further. Luckily I was able to get around his/her attempt at keeping me quiet. For I believe in knowing the truth especially when it involves learning how to protect your life or the lives of others. My friend, once you have been enlightened as to the true meaning of Kata training you too will look at this bunkai as I do.
The reason there are no blocks in Kata training is due to the fact that blocking requires a partner to really punch or kick at you so that you may develop your timing and distance needed to execute an actual block. Since most kata are practiced as a solo exercise they do not develop your timing and distance issues. What kata actually teaches us as a beginner is proper body alignment, total body coordination, breathing and focus.
@1970mew As you progress in your kata training, the kata teaches us proper angle and direction of striking/grabbing pressure points as well as joint manipulation techniques.
Unlike what we see in this video, a kata is not one continuos fight with several people. Kata techniques are individual self defense techniques. Sometimes it was the students of the ancient masters who actually developed the kata to help them remember the techniques their masters had taught them. often times to keep certain techniques a secret, students or family members were not allowed to write anything down so they would develop a kata to help them remember.
It is unfortunate that there are so many people practicing martial arts and have no clue about what they are actually doing when it comes to kata practice. The question that you must answer truthfully for yourself is; would you actually defend yourself as demonstrated in this video? If so, may you live a peaceful life to where no one ever physically attacks you. Perhaps I would better serve you and others by posting a video demonstrating what I am talking about. Thank you for you attention.
It is crap like this that gives Karate a bad impression. This bunkai is totally ridiculous. Anyone who believes this is the true meaning of the kata moves is just as ridiculous.
Wow, I love the scene where the guy with the bo just vanished after his unsuccessful attack. Reminds me 80s jump'n'run video games. Hilarious!
