Yes, but keeping it away for some time will create dampness in the air and on the battery and this is water but in gas form. Once it touches the surface it turns into a 'tiny' amount of water, therefore wasting the battery. You'll come to your 'life saving' battery only to find it has run out. :D

Our AAA, AA, C, and D batteries produce electrical potential by chemical reaction which produce moisture. This moisture escape with time when batteries are stored for long period of time.
