The screen is packed with talent to the max when these two legends share it. One of the most memorable scenes in movie history, together with the one in which Nicholson punches De Niro.
How odd you should say that. But now that you mention it, he does look like an older, manlier (balder?) Di Caprio.
Everything about these actors is special. Their facial features, voice timbers, gestures, looks in their eyes, their insane charisma and talent make it obvious they're really blessed human beings.
And young De Niro can be really menacing. Just watch Raging Bull, Once Upon a Time in America, Deer Hunter, Mean Streets and you'll see how badass he really is as a young man.
His character in Raging Bull is an immature, agressive-abusive and emotionally unstable man, but I wouldn't say badass (though he was a badass inside the ring). Of course De Niro did perfectly what the role required.
My commentary was not about his acting ability, but rather his looks compared with the later Heat - Ronin era.
His rough, extremely masculine facial bone structure and assertive-brash look in his eyes always made him seem real tough and badass to me in Raging Bull. But I agree that as he got older, the look in his eyes and on his face got a little less immature and more decisive-tenacious and overall more masculine. To me, he's the most masculine actor, alongside a young Clint Eastwood.
Umm..young de Niro in the scene he has with Jack Nicholson in "The Last Tycoon" is less intimidating because he's not playig a "tough guy" character. He supposed to be playing a rich jewish film producer from NY. But Younger De Niro can play intimidating characters in films like Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter and Raging Bull.
I like the soundtrack of this movie. Can you extract it from the movie? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks

Even though I think De Niro is better actor in general and was great in this scene with Nicholson but Jack stold the scene. Jack seemed...natural.
