  • suck it upshaw!!!!!!

  • Dessay est complètement, totalement, atrocement... folle !! Mais quelle maîtrise, et quel bonheur dans son chant ! Alors là, oui, vivement l'asile....

  • Amazing voice ! Best ! Can't find any problem !

  • An incredible interpretation and vocal pyrotechnics!!

  • this IS the best ...no question...[in my opinion lol]

  • This is definitely sung more on the operatic style than Broadway, which is the difference btwn Dessay and Chenoweth, the latter who sings Broadway and has never sung opera. Dessay has a lot of energy, humor & expression here. She does extremely well here. I enjoyed this very much. Put it on my Youtube fav videos!

  • @OperaMystery80 I don't want to be rude, but I want to point out that Kristin Chenoweth earned her master's degree in opera performance. She has been singing opera ever since she was in college, and she made her opera performance debut in 2007 at the Metropolitan opera.

  • @guest12355 In '07 at the Met in what opera ? Traviata ? Carmen ? Madame Butterfly ? Tosca ? Queen of the Night in Magic Flute ? What role could she possibly sing with that small non-operatic voice ?

  • @OperaMystery80 zerlina.

  • @jamesebailey Right and that's all for her because I'm sure Chenoweth's not singing Violetta anytime soon...Zerlina ? LOL Even Donna Elvira has a bigger part in Don Giovanni. LOL Chenoweth seems to able to make a fine Queen of the Night (she can hit high F's) plus she spoofs the Queen in her song Girl From 14G....but she is not an opera singer just because she sang the miniscule role of Zerlina

  • I'm. Blown. Away.

  • BRAAAAVOOOOOOOO! Super Soprano! Capital Coloratura! Amazing Actress! I'm sold! I thought I'd nerver come by an omnipotent operatic artist like Callas - but here she is! I'm thrilled!

  • About Chenoweth: I dont like her voice, I dont like her acting. Too exaggerated.. And he rhigher notes are like a little girl's scream.

About Dessay: I think her performance in this song is unbeatable

  • Cheno is singing for a completely different audience than Dessay. But it's hard to deny either of them are extremely talented.

  • KAAAAA-RAZY GREAT! LOLOLOLOLOL WOW!

  • Singing doesn't get any better than this. Pure pleasure.

A performance you can watch over and over, year after year. This is Dessay at her most youthful, vibrant and brilliant. You are only young once and Dessay didn't waste her youth that's for sure!

  • If you could listen to only ONE version of this aria, this is the one to choose.

  • Essa interpretação na voz dela ficou perfeita.Brava Natalie!!!

  • @DavidoffGustav It's silly to compare the two since they are two different singers (classical vs. broadway), but if you insist on doing so... Natalie has far more technique. She could easily sing everything Chenoweth does, the reverse is not true. For example, Chenoweth could never do that pianissimo trill at 1:40 or sing the sequence at 4:10 without belting - Chenoweth can't sing over D6 or so, she has to belt and her belting is ugly and comes out as a scream.

  • Incredible.

  • In a single word:

    FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Damn...that was amazing! Bravo!

  • This is her best "Glitter and be gay" performance! thaaanks for uploading! :D

  • I like this performance from her more than the other one.

  • =,))

  • Brava Natalie!

  • She's utterly fabulous except that it is not Cunegonde. Watch her in Lucia...nobody has done mad better.

  • God! I love this interpretation! Actually I just love Ms. Dessay :P

  • 1:37 and between 2:16 and 3:00.... O_O

  • I think I'm in love. MUST LEARN THIS ASAP, my GAWD.

  • FANTASTICA!!!!!

  • wat an amazing lady!

  • I am not a Dessay fan. But she is absolutely perfect here! I have never heard this aria sung better.

  • the best performance of this aria..ever!!!!! Dessay is absolutely amazing!!! I found this video few years ago and wanted to enjoy it again...i still can´t believe how perfect did Dessay sing this aria!!!!! SHE IS FANTASTIC, FUNNY, AMAZING SINGER AND ACTRESS!!!

  • I honestly like Kristin Chenoweth better for this song and for all the songs she sings. She adds personality and a lot of fun to the songs.

Mz. Dessay is amazing, I will agree, but I'd rather listen to Mz. Chenoweth on this song. But I agree that toward the upbeat part of the song she makes me speechless, but so does Kristin Chenoweth.

Natalie Dessay is better suited for opera, I believe, and in her younger years, I'd have loved to see her as Christine in Phantom of the Opera.

  • @TheTaiylorWallace Exactly. I was about to write a comment like that, but i scrolled down and saw someone else already did. This song just is misinterpreted by opera singers too often. It's a young girl that's laughing. The haha's aren't supposed to be sung dark and creepy. It's laughter. Overall this song has to be a young girl celebrating her jewels. Dessay sounds like she's scheming something. Don't get me wrong, Dessay is AMAZING, just not my favorite in this

  • @jtg10795

Absolutely fascinating, Natalie, as usual. But not exactly in this aria. She is older than the girl she should represent. Besides, she makes a lot of faces that perhaps would fit better in an angry character. I still prefer the first I saw long ago, that is Kristin Chenowet

  • @voltape I agree. Kristin portrays the part in the way it's supposed to be portrayed, Natalie plays it like its the Queen of the Night. She needs to lighten up a bit and just, well laugh (ha ha hahahaha ha hahaha ha hahaha...etc.)

  • @voltape I understand but Kristin has not this good technique

  • Incroyable!

  • incroyable!

  • Holy hell! Wow, Natalie! What a musician, artist, singer energiser, intelligent sorprano she is! Natalie would have to be one of the most intelligent singers around. That was astonishing. When she retires one day I hope she stays around to mentor new up and coming sorpranos. She has so much to pass on.

  • All right, it's funny. Her diction in English needs improvement hough. I think I can catch about a quarter of what she sings.

  • @correatres Her english is fantastic, though like many Europeans of her age or older she was probably instructed in British English. Tune your ears for a bit of a British-via-France accent and it's perfectly clear.

  • I've listened to several versions of this song (including a latter one by Natalie herself), and I must say I like this one the best. Probably because the shout at the ending is the greatest here. :D

  • She and Gruberova are the best!

  • a brilliant portrayal of cunegonde

  • ^_^

  • Es la mejor versión......

  • I love love love natalie.. this performance is genius!!

  • The part that got me was 4:10-4:12. WOW! A high F! Sheesh...

  • WOW

  • Agh! I love Natalie! She is such a star! =)

  • Utterly speechless here!!!!!!!!!!! Vocally magnificent and the hysterical shout at the end is so in character!!!!!!

  • l'energia arriva fino a qua! un miracolo di donna

  • Ok. This can't be real. Absolutely amazing!!!

  • Ah, décidément, tu dois l'aimer cette Natalie, pour commenter soigneusement chacune de ses vidéos. C'est bien de la soutenir, continue comme ça, c'est très drôle.

  • Her version is more of a broadway version. You can't compare... I don't like comparing singers anyway.

  • Fantastic rendition. Restrained yet wild and operatically theatrical. I just saw S. Kermes' absolutely over the top rendition, more of a cabaret-ish type ...still quite valid

  • Excelente!!!!

  • She indeed deserves the 5 stars!! Muito bom!!

  • xDxD she acted wounderfully

and i like at the end when she screams hysterical ''AAA!!!''

    natalie, tu est la mieux!

  • I love this song done by Dessay. She shows amazing control with her voice. And the ability to hit those high notes is astounding.

  • OMG

  • as of 4:50 = l'ombra di callas lol

  • 2:52 LOL

  • Indeed she had some problems with her voice, but she's back and singing, and must tell you her voice is even more beautiful, colorful now then it was before. She was operated, but I think she still could hit high notes but she takes care and does not sing them as much as before, also singing other roles then before. Have heard her 3 months are as Melisande - was beautiful!

  • especially philarmonidiot

  • you're all such idiots

  • The last 40 seconds or so are amazing!! Thanks for posting.

  • Véritable chef d'oeuvre d'interprétation!! finement chanté et joué! Vive Natalie!!

  • Truly amazing, but it can't compare to Kristin Chenoweth's performance (also on youtube). I do love the added even higher notes in the second verse, though.

  • Desay is the best!!!!!

  • One of the best Candide I have ever heard, for sure! Meanwhile she is unforgotable actress too... just watch at her eyes all the performance and you should find it out right!!!

  • god i love dessay. I have had the privilege of meeting her a couple of times and when you see her and meet her and stand next to her its hard to believe this little french woman can create the sound she does. She is unbelievable. What i would give to have lunch with her..someday :)

  • WoW

  • she is mesmerizing... her voice is so freakishly high and accurate it reminds me of the blue alien lady in the Fifth Element! GO DESSAY! She gets my vote for best living coloratura sop.

  • She is not a coloratura anymore :(

  • she stills is but passed her prime only b/c vocal surgery twice i mean she was beautiful in la sommabula at the met this past season :)

  • but she does not force her voice as she did before. you know she used to hit high G or even high A without any afford. She does note do it any more. I've heard that it's because of losing her coloratura but I'm not sure. Anyway I lover her new voice too :)

  • oh i see where this is going sorry for bashing you :)

  • Coloratura is a written part and technique, there a coloratura, contraltos, basses and tenors. bassically it is the virtuoso for voice

  • 2:18 he sang D instead of E'b, other than that wonderful job.

  • she is singing the same as everyone else at this point...that's how it's written.

  • There are a few places where her diction could use a little cleaning up, but I think that's the only complaint anyone could legitimately make about this performance. Even as far as acting goes, I think she rocked it! And she sounds like the voice of God! ... If God were a coloratura soprano... lol.

  • ahahaha she's so funny. i really enjoyed watching her. i think she can even be a musical singer.

  • wow... qu'elle précision, qu'elle éclat ! qu'elle finesse... jamais entendu cela auparavant !!!

  • This is the most classically controlled version of those available on Utube. Not necessarily the best "acted" but it's a concert performance so that doesn't bother me. Wonderful purity of tone, and as for technique .... wow.

  • She sang the HELL out of that aria! Wow!

  • 1.43 is sheer perfection and shows she knows what she is doing.

  • I am not a big Dessay fan but she is one of the best at singing this particular song

  • She has wonderful control over her top range. Her voice sounds really beautiful during the laughing parts and cadenzas and such. I just don't like the way she acts it. Sorry! *dodges objects thrown by obsessive Dessay fans*

  • AMAZING upper range. DEFINANTLY one of the best vocal performances of this piece recorded.

  • She's so funny! I think she has the cutest facial expressions, even though her body movement can be a little distracting at times.

    And what a voice!

  • her performance of the peice... scares me. i closed my eyes and just listened and found i enjoyed it a whole lot more.

  • yeah, as a comedian she is DEFINETELY GREAT AND HILARIOUS but as a coloratura....a professional soprano coloratura, chenoweth wouldn't even be able to get 3/10 . and Dessay gets 9/10 for me. No sry, in THIS performance Dessay is 10/10. Just don't forget that this is a comical part....but an OPERETTA! it is meant to be sung in opera theaters, not cabaret shows.

  • damrau, did a better job of this and queen of the night, but i do like dessay, and admire her for making a come back after surgery

  • yes i also like damrau, mostly because of her acting skills.....when it comes to voice i think that dessay has an amazing control and stability when singing, not to mention her EXTREMELY high notes

  • unfortunately back then she forced them, liaten to damraus recordings, they sound better than live

  • what is her highest note in this song?

  • here, in the video you just watched natalie sang a high F at about 4:09 ......and natalie dessay can also reach a high A-flat ;) I dont think that there's anyone else in this world that can sing an A-flat and make it sound beautiful and not like a squeak! xDDDDD

  • She slides up to an Ab at the end of this piece too. And actually she can go higher than Ab! In the early 90s she sang in "le roi l'a dit" and sang an A natural. Crazy.

  • Do you have the audio ? :)

  • I have!!!!!

    Its splendid.

  • totally agree

  • E flat.

  • This is just amazing! She does it fabouluos! Funny and vocally still outstanding, wou!

  • i think she's absolutely amazing, and i like watching her aswell. so much energi and emotions going on in her whole body, everything she sings makes me shiver.

  • Her voice is beyond words.

  • Astounding vocally. Dramatically, she captures Cunegonda's humor in her typically Gallic manner. Natalie Dessay has at least two other versions of this on YouTube, each different in their own way.

  • I find this version of Glitter and Be Gay better than June Anderson's version... She has an incredible voice, but I think she has, at the beginning of the piece, a voice to strong, and it's break the "mystery" atmosphere of the beginning. But she's an incredible interpretation... And of course, what a incredible music ... I was learning at Massy's Opera to be a conductor (near 1990) and Leonard Bernstein must come to teach us, but he died before... 1 month berfore he would come ... RIP.. :')

  • Her singing voice is amazing, but I don't like watching her sing, or listening to her act.

I don't know what it is.

    But AMAZING pipes!

I wish I could sing like that!

  • fantastica!!!!!!! amazing!!! Incredibile!!!

  • shes just as good as cheno though ill always be parshal to kristin chenoweth.

  • No one sings glitter and be gay like her :O AMAZING!

  • the most perfect performance I've ever listened ..

  • i love her voice but im not sure about the robe she's wearing and the manic hand swinging :) (looks like a little crazy lady) but yeah, beautiful sound!

  • Cunegonde *is* going, or has gone crazy.

  • I agree that she has a fabulous sound. But I can hardly understand a word she says, and she does, for some reason, look like she's crazy! I guess it's the eyes. I do much more enjoy Chenoweth's performance overall. But this woman does have the "pipes!!"

  • gosh...it almost felt like a masterclass...she was just like...ok now this is how its done :)

  • are you a singing

  • am i a singing?....im a singer? lol haha. yes i am...only been doing classical for 5 years now but ya.

  • Fantastic that's great. What range?

  • Im a tenor!! :( so this song isnt an option for me....HOWEVER im also a pianist so i have ordered the music so that when a soprano comes along i can play it for them haha....HOWEVER AGAIN....i do have a VERY high falsetto so i can actually hit every note in this song...except that crazy high F she added haha...but even still obviously i cant perform it...people would think i was crazy but i do actually enjoy this song a LOT haha....

  • Hah, I know how you feel. I have a really high falsetto too and I can sing it too, but don't for obvious reasons :P.

  • amazing!!! haha

  • What orchestra is this?

  • No...not quite. Just not quite integrated enough a performance, esp. compared too Damrau. But of course I'm comparing brilliance here.

  • I have to say that I was reluctant to like this b/c I love Kristen Chenoweth so much, but I loved it. I think Kristen's overall performance was better, but I like just listening to Natalie better. Like a PP said, that high F in the middle was unreal and a surprise that gave me chills. Thanks for sharing!

  • really well-done;

Thanks muchers for the vid :]

  • wow. dessay in her prime. such resonance! definitely my favorite. i mean, props to chenoweth, i love her rendition, but dessay is proof that you can employ proper technique and still be hilarious

  • she just amazing!

  • PERFECT..........But I still prefer Diana Damrau version!!!

  • I Loved. It is very funny! XD

  • omg... i was not expecting that high F in the middle. amazing!!!!!!!

  • (sry) plus considering she doesn't really speak english right?

  • She speaks English very well, actually.

  • i watched this like a month ago and commented....but i feel the need to again: this woman is amazing, perfect comedian+vocalist+actress

  • Wow!! This was phenomenally good.

  • Read the book by Voltaire. It's completely hilarious. Then you'll understand the song.

  • 4:10 was incredible, but honestly, the best part was her cackle at the end. Ah, Natalie Dessay is truly a goddess.

  • LOL she really made it her own, and it made sense. sometimes the laughter in the end doesn't make too much sense!

  • This is astounding. She's a brilliant comic actress - her timing is spot on and she's actually very subtle compared to a lot of people's performance of this aria and totally has her own take on it. This is really her vocal peak as well (compare to later performances on youtube). I'd loved to have seen this live. A truly fantastic and instinctive performer.

  • Es una cantante excepcional voz unica, artista consumada, es la mejor del mundo en este momento con toda seguridad, sobreagudos clarisimos abundantes y cristalinos.

  • shes adorable and perfect

  • She is the consumate artist: voice, emotion, and musicality.

  • i LOOOVE Candide! I know someone who recently played the old lady at the NYC Opera in it. it was so funny! i love this song.

  • Whats the story?

  • There really isn't a story...it's kinda everywhere. The woman that I know who played the Old Lady in it (and she's done a billion shows) can't describe it.

  • I think this is my favorite

  • Mine too.

  • God almighty, I love this version. Those top notes blew me away, so loud and clear in tone. She interprets the character very well also.

  • i love the ending!

  • I think she is wonderful and maybe you don´t understand perfectly the text because the piece is acute; but she pronounced the English very well. she is really wonderful and has a voice that can be said of its interpretation and performan, simply she is wonderful. Dessay thanks for your work, you are really great and an inspiration to thousands of people.

  • Her speaking voice is not low at all. Try matching her pitch. It just sounds low for her to say. But it isnt.

  • Beautifully done!

  • I love it how she sings so perfectly in these incredibly high notes, then her speaking voice is incredibly low! It's so funny!

  • Simple unbelievable control. Very clean rendition

  • love it, her voice!!!

  • An amazing performance by a virtuoso artist! Wonderful timbre and unmatched technique!
