  • thank you! I didn't know this version.

I'm working on a spike Jones revival.

  • spike jones has always been my favorite!

  • Work of rare genius!!!Ahead of his time & unappreciated now.....thx!

  • The LP recording I have has Spike Jones narrating the story, and some of the pieces he really puts me into ecstatics. He twists up the ending: Don Jose never becomes a bullfighter to challange Escamillo to a duel by bullfighting in the real opera. Carmen gets what's coming to her ,for destroying Don Jose's pride, dignity and respect.

  • cooool und unglaublich virtuos!

  • Actually this has been released a few years back. It was one of Spike's projects that wasn't released until after his death.

  • @keithm1138 Is it currently available on any Spike Jones albums on CD? Most of the time it's hard to find anything more than best of compilations.

  • @Goldberg1337 It's listed on Spike Jones: the man who murdered music. Quite a few hard to find songs here.

  • Absolutely Brilliant...

  • Frank Zappa's grandfather

  • thanks.......

  • Its quite apparent that Spike collaborated with the great P.D.Q. Bach on this seminal work - It has all of the earmarks of such a collaboration. What! you say PDQ lived before Spike? Not so, PDQ and Spike both had the ability to move through time musically speaking, as any musicalolologist can tell you..... Ah Spike and P.D.Q... What more need (or can) be said? Huzzaaa Kudos! Bravo and Encore!

  • A giant LOL. That is all :D

  • This was recorded circa 1960. Recorded for Liberty Records- and considered unfinished.

    We're lucky they exist!

  • @charterloungeparty Was it? I perceived well the rock-n'roll-like style in the first part of 'Toreador Song'. It's terribly hilarious!

  • @acla9000

I didn't hear anything "rock'n'roll" about it... more like your standard "simple-minded" brass march music.

  • @twooffour Wait a moment, pal. I only said it LOOKED LIKE a rock'n'roll style, not that was EXACTLY THAT. ( it began just at 2:36 ) for some hits of this kind had this rhythm and brass arrangement in the 50s. I don't know when Jones recorded that, but what's wrong with me finding that? First; rock'n'roll had rhythm and blue roots; second, he had been recording some hits until the 60s, little before he died. Think twice before calling someone 'simple-minded', OK, Mr. Smart Alec?

  • @acla9000

Um, I was referring to the brass music style when I said "simple-minded" - can you read?

At any rate, I thought you were referring to the bit at 3:30; 2:36 does sound like r&r, my bad :D

  • Right, it is a slide whistle.

  • I believe what you are hearing is a slide whistle. (Starting at 1:07)

  • @SemperVaporo but what is that BEFORE the slide whistle?

  • Or that MIGHT be somebody playing a carpenters saw.....

  • The Theremin....rare.

  • This was no doubt the "overture" to the full-length parody Jones and the Slickers recorded in 1949 {released as "Spike Jones Murders Carmen"}.

  • great!!

  • I'm so glad you uploaded this gem!!

  • @brtherjohn "germ" would be appropriate, too!
