I've loved this song since it was released. I'm American, so I grew up hearing it in English--but I've always thought Swedish is the most beautiful language in the world. Still, "k" = "sh" is kind of blowing my mind. I was under the impression that Swedish spelling was more "phonetic"/consistent, and didn't have "tricks" like my silly language!

K is pronounced k in front of hard vowels (a, o, u, å) and sh in front of soft vowels (e, i, y, ä, ö). (Not the second e in kärleken however, since it's an inflicted form of kärlek.) Swedish spelling is pretty consistent, except when it comes to sh-/ch-sounds, which we have about a gazillion spellings for ... ;)

"Fernando" was not originally an ABBA song but was written for Anni-Frid. It appeared on her 1975 #1 Swedish solo album, Frida ensam. The song was written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson and was originally titled "Tango".

Very true, the Swedish version is about love, but it does rise so far above the simple love song in that it depicts loves pain realistically, then revels in it, glorifying love itself -- "long live love, our best friend." I love this Swedish version of the song. I'm trying to learn Swedish, and seeing the Swedish lyrics along with the English translation of them really helps. I love how some words and phrases sound/are very similar to English, such as "bästa vän" - "best friend", "fyll ditt glas" - "fill your glass", "vill du dricka...?" - "would you drink...?". Swedish is such a beautiful language.

Thank you Laura. They are considerably different. According to what's in front of me, Stig Anderson wrote the Swedish lyrics. "The narrator tries to console the heartbroken

Fernando, who has lost his great love"! Bjorn re-wrote the lyrics in English. "There were two veterens reminiscing in their old age about a war that they had fought in during their youth" Quite different aren't they.

I was going to say! One Swedish word I do know is "karlek" (pronounced "SHA-lick") which means "love." I thought, what in the world would two war veterans be talking about love? Or they would rewrite the song with a whole another set of lyrics. I know Stig's famous for that. That explains it.
