@think4everyone yeah, I'm sure you were watching when the white horse in front was backtracking blindly and took out one of them, could have easily trampled that poor bugger. As for the guy who turned around and was prepped to sprint the other way, you never know what a scared animal will do, it certainly seemed like the white horse was going to keep going backwards
@think4everyone ever been trampled by a horse? Ever had your foot crushed under a hoof? If not you have no room to talk. I've been around horses my whole life and when they get spooked and scared you'd better be ready to get out of the way. 140lbs man vs 1500lbs horse never ends well.
Bikes makes horses very nervous, every time. It's a machine type noise moving very fast close and approaching them. They think predator or imminent harm is coming their way. I ride by horses a lot and you absolutely must be careful on a bike when you are near them. The riders here were reckless and should have at a minimum gave warning to the horse riders and let them move out of the road so the cyclists could pass. I am saying this as a cyclist, and I think this is the cyclist's fault.
@beastgp so the lead car never saw them, or the horses weren't on the road when the lead car came past? Chief comm car should have been behind you guys and seen the outcome and stopped the race anyway (called forward to lead car to stop, forcing the riders to stop too). Or maybe things are run differently over there? Over here that race would have/should have been stopped and regrouped after making sure everyone was ok. That's often announced in pre-race briefing too.
I wonder if the equestrians are the same ones that take up the bike lanes in NYC parks and let their horses crap all over the lane. People bitch about roadies, but horses and horse carriages are the worst.
Great video. If these equines were on the road when it was clearly posted that they shouldn't be then this is clearly their fault. However, the cyclists who tried to go around the horse are complete fools: anyone who gets anywhere near the business-end of a horse when it's agitated probably deserves the kick in the head they're liable to get - it might actually do them some good.
How is it possible that you guys race in the USA and don't neutralise when you come into the path of horses? We see them all the time in the UK and the race is always neutralised. Any time gap over 30 secs is given the gap back when the race is back on.
Impressed that nobody was hurt (doesn't look like it?) considering it looked like one guy was getting trampled in the road.
I personally know the victim attacked by the beligerent horses ass. He is a brave man full of courage who has been left a shell of a man after this traumatic experience. This horse MUST be found and stopped. Cyclists beware or his fate may be yours.
As a horse owner and a cyclist, I understand both sides of the issue. People need to realize, though, how out of control a frightened horse can get. The rider here was afraid of getting seriously hurt by her horse, who was running in a panic straight into the trees. I have friends who have been knocked unconscious in the woods by a panic-stricken horse. They have brains the size of walnuts, and can't reason through what's happening here.
i think the rider that was hit by the horse's butt was trying to make a sneak move and get a lead on the race. I thought I saw his hand tried to touch the horse butt...lol. But at least the rider was ok.
My favorite par is at 0:39 number 484 must have thought the horses were going to stampede and whips his bike around super quick to take off.. don't blame him though, horses are huge animals and wheels and limbs snap easily.
@jinxaha I think ever since Chaingate from this year's Tour de France, people have been putting extra emphasis on fair play... "hold up, his chain is off"
I came upon a horse the other day and was hesitant to pass it too closely. The rider said "you won't get much of a draft sitting behind me". Told him I just didn't want to scare the horse. I don't think all horse riders know how scared horses can get.
Peloton needs to pack heat! Note to race organizers- Check to see if anyone is planning a leisurely horseback ride on course. BTW- was the A or B field? Kissena guy... SMH!
That looks like a tiagra loadout. Are you planning to upgrade to 105 or ultegra for higher intensity racing?

don't know when it was OK for horses to be on a road instead of a trail. unless this is a multi-use trail. this is crazy.

I dont bike, nor do I ride horses, but this was clearly the fault of the horse riders who ignored the warnings to not go on that road.
Ignoring a warning is YOUR OWN FAULT, then you almost killed some bikers because you and your stupid horses cant follow simple warnings.
Ugh, stupid people.
