I have the 2 CD set that is basically the soundtrack of this vid; It sounds WAY better than this crappy Youtube vid. I originally bought this on VHS, and had to return it because it was defective. Took years to find it again, this time on DVD. The sound quality is much better than what you see here.
All the die hards may thing think it Dave Brock whos Hawkwind. And he is. He took them all these years through thick and thin. But is still the Bob Calvert years that give me the fondest momemts. You cant beat Bob. He was the best.
i loved Hawkwind, seeing this tribute band is deeply saddening. the schism leaves us all dissatisfied. Like Mark Smith says, if its me and your granny on bongoes, its the fall. Ron Trees Calvert impression makes you wonder if he has a personallity of his own
I've been roped into going to see them in Glasgow in Dec and am dreading it - hoping the Crazy World of Arthur Brown will make up for having to sit thru Hawkwind lol!
I have to admit that this is one of their better songs tho
Sorry, this is crap, I had a lot of respect for them but if this is what they have come to then come on guys get on the pipe & slippers cos' Hawkwind this is not! more like Budgiefart!
Don't have a freak out! This is from ages ago... They are back to their best again now...I,m going to see them next week..(9 May) i'll let you know what it was like...
I saw Hawkwind play at Essex University in the very early 70's. The supporting group was Nazareth. Oh what a night. I still have the poster somewhere.
That chord progression is pretty similar to "Lets do the timewarp" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Similar, but different. I was like "WTF??" at the start.
First saw them at an all-nighter in the Eldorado Wrestling/Dance Hall (you're ahead of me there) in Leith, Edinburgh - maybe 1971? and I'm giving you a few years, mate.
Some of their stuff is absolute shite, but other stuff is frankly timeless and still sounds brand new.
i was born in the wrong yr m8,man love hawkwind uraih heap zep lol, mind you just love good music&grew up with dads partys hahaha the lps&bongs out were good safe times & good memorys for me,,blows your mind hawkwind they were ahead of there time a
Just found the sleeve notes from doremi fasol latido which has some memorabilia in there.
From an old ticket, the concert was 1972, the all nighter was "9pm to 2am" - but I'm sure there were about 4 or 5 acts and that I bounced in to work straight from the concert - and the tickets were 50p! That's bloody dear, I think I was on £10 a week then as an apprentice.
They were obviously getting more famous as time went on - tickets in July were 60p!!
First time I have seen/heard this version and it ROCKS - this comes from someone who has followed the Hawks for 37 years - so for all you jonny-come-latelys - listen to the voice of experience!
brilliant sound, i'm too young to remember when this first come out but since i first heard it on TOTP 2 i thought to myself, man that's fucking amazing!! i love lemmy and all his music after this with motorhead, he rocks!! this song is all to do about a silver bicycle with a ringing bell, wtf! lol, great posting ty!! :-)
listened to this on a crap battery operated teeny radio in 1972. i was 14. loved it then. love it now. saw them in 1975. awesome. will always be the essence of my chidhood. always.

Motorhead wasn't spawned out of hawkwind.. lemmy wasn't even ever a proper member of the band; he was just the speed-freak roadie that someone made the mistake of handing a bass guitar.
PliskinLee: Was there ever a definitive Hawkwind line up? I think who ever turned up on the night with an instrument got to play in the band. I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon in 1977 when they were doing their Quark, Strangeness and Charm tour/album.
lemmy never sang street machine bob calvert did lemmy wrote and sang the original song motorhead while still with hawkwind and when they split it was agreed that motorhead was lemmy's hence his name

MrCriticOfAll 4 years ago
Yes, Lemmy did in fact sing 'Silver Machine'.
I quote Mr. Kilmister himself from his autobiography, "White Line Fever."
" 'Silver Machine', our only hit. That was really my only time singing lead, except for "The Watcher', 'Lost Johnny', and 'Motorhead'".
Calvert and Brock wrote it and Bob Calvert sang it live but Lemmy did lead vocals in the studio and that was their hit in 1972.
lemmyrocks 4 years ago
how good are you?A true hawkwind buff too.ok tell me the very first album calvert and brock did.
MrCriticOfAll 4 years ago
around the time, after IIRC they recorded another version - not the single with Lemmy or the 10th anniversary. Brock sings, plays guitar & overdubs a solo to stand-in for Simon's violin solo. Lemmy is on & Powell, one of the 2 drummers they had then (they added Powell w/ Simon King, who drums solo on the original S.M.) played drums. i think there are some that argue Paul Rudolph played bass, but Lemmy, Nik & Powell were all purged simultaneously. i actually heard this version 1st, in '86!
