Funny that the critics don't like the main character dying... especially when that's exactly what happened in Night of the Living Dead, the original and best zombie movie ever.

The difference is that in NOTLD the survivor was draped in shadow from the inside of a window while the shooter (minus a scope) is standing well away from the house. Logically, one can see how things unfolded as they did.

In this movie they're all standing in broad daylight, the shooter has a scope on his weapon, and his buddy has a pair of binoculars. There's absolutely no logic there. It was a horrible attempt at a twist ending, whether or not it's paying homage to (or ripping off) NOTLD.

My take is, upon further review, that they got fed up of the painful acting, flat dialogue, and repeated use of the same "actors" as zombies sometimes within a matter of minutes, and decided to turn the ship around by popping an unintentionally loltastic exclamation point in this film's ass.
