What a writing geniusand her voice has such feeling. It's almost like a blues artist that actually feels the music and that is reflected in the performance. It's such a shame that it took me all these years to get turned on to her great talent. You expect people to live long and prosperous lives but I guess we are like a candle that burns for a while, then eventually the flame goes out. Peace

Check it out, you guys. I just yesterday (12/3) saw a flippin fantastic discussion betw. Elton John & Elvis Costello on a show called "Spectacle." Anyway, Elton spent a better part of the hr extolling the virtues of Laura Nyro's musical genius. He talked about how influential she was to all artists in terms of composing songs, and especially vocal and musical arrangements. It was way cool. Sundance channel if you can find it. PS Elton also mentioned David Ackles, and some other luminaries.

It's called 'Rhythm and Blues' and is the second song off of her 1978 'Nested' album.

Laura Nyro was one of the greatest songwriter/singers of the past 100 years, IMO; Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Neil Young and Bob Dylan are up there with her greatness.

I have been a laura nyro fan since the beginnings. The bohemian times, candle wax and wine as i proceeded to convert friends to her beauty. Inspired i wrote my first song in

1969 and continue today giving praise for the passion she instilled in developing my style.

Mine too; I nearly wore it out when I was in college. My big thrill was seeing her live; John Denver was her warm-up act! She is one of my three "goddesses;" Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush are my other two.

Laura Nyro was an insiration for Todd Rundgren , Peter Buck (of R.E.M), Patti La Belle, etc. Her songs have been recorded by Barbara Streisand, Blood, Sweat and Tears, and the Fifth Dimension. She inspired Alvin Alley to start a dance troupe. She is a modern goddess, and I kneel, with "umbris"in her memory.

Children, don't fight! Laura Nyro was primarily a songwriter. She only got one record onto the charts, but wrote a lot of great songs for other artists. If you want to compare her to someone, try Carole King. They were contemporaries.

@arthurzdog It wasn't so much that she wrote FOR other artists as David Geffen spread her talent to various important people that GOT the songs to other performers' attention. For example, she never actually wrote 'Stoney End FOR Barbra Streisand, did she?.

Thanks for including songs like "Mercy on Broadway" and the most wonderful "Brown Earth". Nyro wrote so many great songs, and so many people still do not know who she is. When her death was announced, all I could think of was there will never be a new Laura Nyro song to listen to again.
