Britain only contains one species of venomous snake, but anywhere else NEVER wash the bite site. In most cases the snake species cannot be identified, but residual venom on the skin can be matched to the appropriate antivenom - if it hasn't been washed off.

But in almost every other country, including the US, and particularly Australia, the worst thing you can do is to wash the bite. Keeping the bite as it is may save your life, because when you get to the hospital, they'll test the venom and administer the antidote. But if the bite has been washed, they don't know which antidote
