Calling it a classic is a bit much, since I feel most agree with my take on it. But anyway, I'm a big Hitchcock fan, and I found this to be easily his worst film of the 20 or so I've seen so far (granted, having not seen too many of his early Briths movies). 121 minutes of boredom, with 4 minutes (this scene) of excellence. Even a great director can make a lousy movie.
I just found Torn Curtain unremittingly dull from beginning to end. I don't know what went wrong since there was the chance to make a great movie (and I did like Topaz oddly enough), but nothing seemed to work aside from this one scene.
Haven't seen Stage Fright, but I have to give a dishonorable mention to The Trouble With Harry, To Catch a Thief and The Paradine Case for worst Hitchcock.
As a German I am proud to say that - this is a proven fact - Hitchock had to cut out some scenes with Newman. There were besides Kieling also Mr.Felmy and Mr.Strack who played Newman so obviously down that Hitchock thought that this could harm his star Newman.
He was trying to keep his cool. psyche them out, as he says himself, he was trained by experts. He thought he could handle them. When he realized he couldn't, he tried to signal the man outside. He opened the window remember? but they closed it before he could scream. And I would think it is pretty hard to scream very loud with a knife jammed in your lungs.
My point is; that this is a great scene, that is designed to build tension. Your not suposed to question its realism. takes the fun away.
Great scene. Too bad the rest of the movie sucks.

Allen: I've seen about that many movies and though I haven't seen Torn Curtain, I'd say Stage Fright is a contender for his worst film.

Allenbys: I haven't seen Thief, but I've watched the other two.
I didn't like The Paradine Case, but The Trouble with Harry I actually liked.
Aside from Stage Fright, I've enjoyed almost every Hitch film I've seen.

A very different vehicle for Paul Newman, and especially Julie Andrews. Good show.

Torn Curtain is not Hitchcock's best movie, but it is good.

OK, I´m a great admirer of Hitch, but this is ridiculous. Every victim would scream out loud treated like this.
