  • did you check out the valve cover no bolts!! prolly spit a rod or lifter collapsed

  • when i saw blown i thought it meant supercharged

  • Hunk of junk

  • @ProtegeTuype only because the original owners didnt give a shit about an awesome vehicle

  • POOR BABY!

Call car abuse on the u know what!

  • 2 year old video but..

Late 99-01 had bad heads. Could of cracked, sent coolant into the oil, and killed the bearings.

There was a couple years of WJs that had problems cracking piston skirts too, I think 00 was one of them.

  • You can get a re-manufactured engine from Jasper for $2500.

  • I don't know what might happen once we jump it off. we are looking for an engine for it

  • we got a 2000 jeep Cherokee with a blown engine the owner didn't take care of it there was a problem with it it's a repo

  • How do people not take care of their cars:(

  • @my2006SS You'd be surprised. Some people don't understand the simple concept of changing the oil in their car's engine every 3,000 miles, that is if you are using regular oil as opposed to Synthentic blend or Full Synthetic oils which can go longer between changes. They keep driving the car ignoring this and one day the engine starts knocking from poor lubrication. People still don't notice it and then this happens. It's sick. Many women in particular don't know shit about cars.

  • @mhtube01 Right. And even if it was just a simple head gasket problem, they only cost like $25! The thing is people dont know how to change the part. The cost of having someone fix it is worth more that the car. I personally buy cars expessialy Grand Cherokee's off craigslist with blown head gaskets and re sell them. I make a good profit on them

  • @my2006SS Cool, that's a good idea. Keep the Jeeps going! You're right about the head gasket though, that seems to be a part of an engine that nobody knows how to change except for those who love working on cars or mechanics. Also, I hate how some people think that if an engine needs a part replaced, it's unacceptable since they should make every part of the engine last forever. Like if a gasket, belt, or a sensor goes bad, the car is "junk." HELLO?! This happens with any engine out there!

  • I just went here from the update vid,and man not much has changed

  • @m4532098 same here XD yeah i agree.. not much has changed...

  • @LordKevin92 Yeah it was probably a really good car back in its days

  • @m4532098 yeah... its 11 years old.. but damn, there are other cars which are more than 15 years old and are still running like new :/

  • @LordKevin92 My moms car is 20 yrs old and it looks better than this hunk of metal

  • @m4532098 what is it?

  • @LordKevin92 1991 Ford Explorer

  • @m4532098 nice :)

  • What a waste of a really good vehicle.

  • Everybody Thinks ''Saabkyle04" blew it up, i think they repoed it already blown, just so theres no confusion:)

  • 2002 SEQUOEA

  • its a modefied 225 slant six

    obviously wont die

  • Ugh, looks like they were living in it. It's no surprise that the engine knocks. 4.0s usually take a lot of abuse. 4.7s are a great engine as well, but require spot-on maintenance. What a shame. It could be a nice vehicle again though.

  • I would think it weird that you'd do a walkaround of a blown car, but I saw you do a walkaround of a semi-trailer...

  • Poor jeep the idiot owner must have been really bad to it if they can kill a 4.0 from chrysler.

  • whaaaaaaat??? how'd they kill a 4.0L??? I'm impressed lol an this thing is only 2wd?

  • now do you do the repo or do other people at your work do the repo

  • @connormink they come in black pick up trucks and rip off the garage door take the car out and tow it

then if the owner comes he gets a bullet to the head

  • i wouldnt be able to kill my own six even if i tryed. What did you do ??? no oil change for 20 000 miles ?

  • this is what happens when you sell cars to niggers. They 'BOO' sells enough crack to get a down payment, then they never pay shit, and you end up re-po'oing a brand new POS that was never taken care of. scumbag nig nogs.

  • the car is still kick some ass

  • rod bearing.....inline 6's make power down low, not meant to be revved...this is the result

  • dam someone cant drive wtf its so hard to kill a straight six

  • can you say scrap metal?

  • probably about the way it sounded before the first time you sold it.

  • there's only one jeep.

  • shoulda go take it mudding. and film it.

  • Увидев это дерьмо в автомобиле, можно многое сказать о его хозяине. (After seeing this crap in the car, you can tell a lot about its owner).

  • is there any oil leaks?

  • I had a 2000 like that and it always had water pump and radiator problems..

  • OH NOOOOOOOO<:-_ _ _ _ _(

  • who ever owned this wj must have blown the crap out of 1 of the cinders in it, it sounds like it to me. but with and automatic that's just sad.

  • It's a jeep.....jump in it drive to the store, buy some beer. Then go to the parts store, spend $400 on parts, drive it home and spend a Saturday fixing it. Right now my '96 4.0 sits with 288,000 on it. So far just 2 water pumps and 1 radiator. Runs as strong as the day I bought it with 11 miles on it. They are a pretty bullet proof engines.

  • @MrKaninja You could usually say that about a Jeep 4.0 engine. But this oen is fucked. Badd crank. I mean look that the oil pressure gauge, it has no pressure!

  • Mine shattered a piston @156K in the #2 hole. Hope the cyl wall isn't mangled.

  • Its a shame that people dont take care of there cars. You can tell the owners of this car were plain pigs

  • My 97 Grand just cracked 192,000 miles on the odo. Still runs like a tank. That 4.0 is one of the best engines that came from Chrysler.

  • @commanderphoenix1 Maybe thats because the 4.0l was originally from AMC.

  • The '99-'04 Jeep 4.0L is crap. My '99 Grand Cherokee Limited started knocking like that at 130K. Big disappointment!

  • Hell on my GC I was told when it hits 200,000 there just getting started

  • Why was the truck sent to your dealership????????

  • Poor neglected WJ. But go figure, in typical "can't kill it" Jeep fashion, the 4.0L still starts up and attempts to idle. lol

  • Comment removed

  • So......my buddy with 230,000+ miles on his 4.0 engine, considered unreliable.

Plus the countless other folks who have 200k+ on the original engine.

    Unreliable? I hardly think so.

  • @blkfreedom03 lol my jeep has around 230,000 on it and its still goin strong

  • oh so that wasn't sarcasm? Who is it well known by that's its unreliable? Did u know consumer reports has a list of the top 10 vehcials that refuse to die and jeep Cherokee 4.0 is #10? Sure its not #1 but 10 out of how many hundreds or thousands of cars made is pretty good.

  • ... it's a jeep thing...

  • I would have been so pissed if this was my Jeep. I hate when cars are neglected and abused .

  • sounds like a diesel

  • @TheKevinChannel1 Or carbureted

  • 99 to 01s had problems with the heads cracking between the #3 and 4 cylinders. Coolant and oil don't mix, obviously.

And whoever said the bearings are weak in the bottom end is full of shit.

  • I think these years of the Grand Cherokee were the best looking ever and what a waste of a great engine

  • @MrUnderpaid I agree, my dad had one, and boy did I like it! they look good lifted too. Can't go wrong with one

  • i dont think shes blown it sounds like shes got some burnt valves and an exhaust leak. damn if it dont piss me off to see such a nice truck filled with shit though

  • @wildstreakjeep1 nope its really the bottom end motor is toast but does have a valve problem also

  • So sad, for one, Chrysler got rid of their best engine, the jeep 4.0l. two, its very hard to kill one of these motors.

  • @Motorfordtoyota

I really hope you're not being serious. This engine is highly known to be very unreliable.

  • @Atheismrulez

    huh?

  • @chefeagles

What you read. This particular engine is horribly unreliable.

  • omg its sound freakin horrible

  • Thank you to the people that posted on this video, I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee just like this, it had a loud knocking, then all of a sudden lost power and started making that noise, now I know it is a thrown rod. Is this somewhat easily fixable if it didn't destroy the crank or the cylinder wall?

  • @Bandsmurf basicly that things done, it needs a new motor. itll be 1000 to 1500 for a used motor. count on it being out of commision for a while. i suggest getting a new car. your trans could be next.

  • @JeepCherokeeKid Yep, I am a Intern at my county Technical High School, and that's where I have it to tear it down.

  • @Bandsmurf All you can do is pull it apart and look. If there is minimal damage to the crank, it should be able to be turned, but if there is block damage, you may have to replace the block. If you are mechanically inclined, do the work yourself, if not take it to a reputable shop. If you take it somewhere shitty, it will cost a lot more than a good shop...Good luck.

  • i am shoked that the service engine light was not on i mean the computer should have noticed the high oil pressure

  • The '97-'00 4.0L's were known for having weak crank bearings... They got it right again around '01.

  • just has noisy lifters, just do an oil change and your good to go

  • @tniemirski DO NOT.... Quit your day job as a Douche Bag...You obviously are not a wrench!!!!

  • @tniemirski noisy lifter more like thrown rod

  • @tniemirski yea thats whats wrong! Would putting air in my tires fix my slipping rear end?? Well every on youtube knows who not to go to for car problems

  • I'm suprised that the engine still had enough compression to fire.

    But she's done anyway.....

  • valve cover bolts are missing!.....hmmm anyone look in there?

  • sound like something from the drag strip!

  • I have one just like this one. There is a piston in the oil pan and the racket is the wrist pin hitting the cylinder wall. I think this 4.0 is good for cracking pistons and eventually they come appart.

  • i wonder whatever happened to this jeep...?

  • This is why you dont let women be responsible for the maintenance of a machine.

  • @0rganDon0r ya know I am sooo sick of GUYS thinking they know every fucking thing!!! Why is it my dumb brother has a car only 3 months each time before he blows the engine? Cuase he does NOT do maintenence! YES I fix my own shit! even my computer. so not ALL women are stupid. My good freind knows nothing about cars or computers so I fix his. Enough said!

  • @grettagrids So, you're the exception to the rule, I commend you for it, but you are still a rare oddity.

  • @0rganDon0r thanks:) I do enjoy fixing things. I tend to baby everything I own but yes this is discusting how anyone can trash things:( living in an apt complex I see and fix more busted cars around here just from lack of maintenence. VERY SAD:(

  • Got a 95 GC 4.0 4x4 216k on it still runs great doesnt have any body rust either

  • These things are TROOPERS. We have a 1994 Jeep Cherokee sitting in California that we are going to get shipped to RI. Jeep is a Strong car. Served us well for 13 years. She had a rest. Time to get back on the road again and kick some Honda Ass! :0 I am 13. :D

  • poor Jeep!!

  • sounds like a drag car lol

  • Im looking to buy a Grand Cherokee 4.0. I have heard that the 99-01 years are real problimatic. Have you seen alot of Grand Cherokee's those years with alot of problems?

  • nice, you can the piston rods crunching around

  • Im thinking of buying a 2002 wrangler 4.0, 5 speed 50k miles....what are some common problems. I had a 99 cherokee 4.0 and the auto trans. went out at 100k so is the 5 speed a better choice,

  • at 2:07 you can clearly see that someone pinched off the pressure relief thing(not sure what its called). Its there so that the gases put off from the oil can be released. Jeep has it to where itll go into the engine and be burned off. No wonder it blow the engine.

  • Look at how high the oil pressure is!

  • @Joseph9536 man i know! im lucky to get 20 in my 91' suburban.

  • @Joseph9536 thats because the gases from the oil has built up and have no where to go

  • @tripovermyego No...no.....it's not. Exhaust gas build up has exactly nothing to do with how the oil pressure gets read.

  • @iluvincitingviolence Its not exhaust gases. You oil produces a gas from getting hot and such and if you pinch everything off to where the gas cant escape, then the pressure is gonna read real high. Either that or someone put way to much oil in the beast

  • @tripovermyego Oil does create vapor, but think about what you're saying...if oil created THAT much vapor, you'd be topping it off constantly. The gas is called blowby. It is gas that slips by the rings and enters the crankcase. The main thing that happens when it builds too much...it blows gaskets finding places to escape. I'm a master certified tech, guy....trust me. Oil pressure is read off the main oil galley after the pump, where crankcase pressure wouldn't affect it.

  • @iluvincitingviolence Ok well I learned something new today. Sorry for argueing back

  • @tripovermyego It's cool...but you are right, not good to clamp that port...could push out a main seal, lose all the oil and fry the engine REAL quick...

  • i have a 1976 mail jeep with an inline 6 no telling how many miles it has! great engines

  • Sorry Meant the I6

  • Im a Jeep fanatic and the I4 are the best engines ever made in any car period!

My I4 has 110k on it thus far and has given me 0 problems. This particular jeep was involeved in a pile up accident, was robbed once, Traveled all along the east coast from Miami to NYC multiple times and pulled a few trailers as well several thousand miles!

But I do maintain the jeep like my life depends on it. Oil changes every 3 months or 2k, regular service, differential, Seals, flushing, tranny service.

  • @aky19832001 way to go!!! thumbs up for you:)

  • god dang look at the oil pressure 4:00

  • hope yall dont get ridd of da body

  • Did you even check the oil?

  • do you guys still have this car

  • well if you got a chevy will than you will forget what a "car problem" is.....i mean we took a 2003 chevy truck 2WD DRIVE!!! places where our FORD 4wd drive will only dream of.....if we get stuck our 2009 POLRIS RANGER will pull us out to verey bad ass thngs

  • Blown engine ? Um the bolts for the Gasket cover are missing.. To me it soundsl ike it has no oil. The smoke is is it overheating. Maybe if you put some bolts on it and poured oil in it before you started it, it would probably be fine.

  • a ford explorer 4.0 would outdo and outlast a jeep cherokee 4.0 anyday anytime

  • these things are the biggest heaps of shit i have ever worked on ,and you all know it !

  • @alientech2010 yeah, They look nice, ride nice but have alot of issues, I thought these were good motors, but after doing some research found blown engines on Jeeps ,esp Grand Cherokees, before 200,000 miles is quite common. These vehicles have alot of issues.

  • @640101vh dude the engine is great. They really do last above 300k a lot if they are treated well. The rest of the car is questionable. For example, I've had to replace every single part of the coolant system in my jeep (water pump, radiator, hoses, thermostat, radiator cap, tons off shitt)

  • @drippinblood28 True, seems like the engine is the only good thing that lasts on these vehicles. I have read people have got over 300k on Jeep Cherokees but never a GC. I think with all the issues the cooling system(running hot, overheating and other stuff) GC have, its nearly impossible to to get 300K out of the motor.

  • @640101vh yeah i guess you're right about that. They don't tolerate high rpms either, but will really last you even 400k or 500k if they never overheat and stuff like that.

  • @640101vh Ive never had a single issue with my 03 GC.(knock on wood). It has the 4.0 in it but never an issue. 129,000 miles and still runs like brand new. I picked it up in DEC of 08 with 91000 miles on it and its NEVER been in the shop nor been worked on minus the PMSC.

  • What a shame

  • I saw a 2000 Nissan Sentra with a blown engine.

The owner did not change oil for 30000 miles!

Some idiots do not know how to take care of cars.

  • @rb26dettsr20 my mom has a 2002 Mitsubishi Mirage that she changes the oil every 25,000 miles every time for the past 50,000 miles or more! Sounds like it runs good, but it's definitely having some problems and I see even bigger problems coming, like getting a new engine, transmission, and all of the engine components within another 15,000 miles if she continues to abuse it like she does. It will become junk yard material by that time, and she cannot afford a new car at all.

  • @2004NissanSentra 25,000 miles? she better start searching for a new engine, because it will probably blow sooner then later .

  • Comment removed

  • from the looks of it its a girls car....thats why its junk now

  • @turboturtle22 well let me make a video of my BFs truck. now THAT is a piece of SHIT!!!. the gears are not even synched right and it's a bitch to shift. 1981 ford F 150 manual. One door--- don't close all the way, needs a doorpanel, rear lights don't work. motor runs good but the starter is weak. basicaly this thing is held together by WIRE.

  • nice Blown and still runs thats a jeep for ya especialy the 4.0s

  • A beautiful symphony of sound.

  • Jeeps, Dodges, plymouths and Chrysler never had issues with motors or transmissions until the middle '90's then Quality went down the toilet. My neighbor bought a 1970 Plymouth Duster, slant 6, automatic ,new on his 21'st Birthday. I'd moved away and hadn't seen him in years then in 2003 I'd learned from a mutual friend he still lived in the same house & stil drove that old Duster routinely. That "WAS" Chrysler...Now they're becoming FIAT's

  • @briquetaverne What american car company didn't have some quality go down the hill during the 90's? Ford and Chevy had their share of issues arising in the 90's as well, most of which could have been prevented by better quality control. GM was GM, now they're government motors. Now everyone has gone to cheap plastic, rock hard interiors and cheap parts. It's sad, really.

  • Jeeeeeeeeesus, that poor thing.

  • how many jeeps did you tour the same mdl??? lol

  • Before cash for clunkers, you could find these engines all over the place. A couple hundred dollars, a cherry picker or engine hoist, a couple buddies and a case of beer on a saturday afternoon and you're all set.

  • that engine is going to be a hefty fix there

  • lol dang piston slap maybe low on oil or they said screw it..its getting re-pod anys blow the engine

  • This makes me sooo sadddd!!! How could you do thiss??!! Ugh and that engine is soo strong and reliable mine has 155000 miles and runs great! And its super clean

  • daimler sucks!

  • -1 For the queer name.

  • hmm usually the 4.0 L engines are very strong or it could just be the 4.0L HO engine.

  • yeah they usually are.. but I think engine reliability..... well overall reliability deteriorated on these generation 4.0 Grand Cherokees and 00-01 Cherokees. I heard alot have oil pumps that go out prematurely as well as excessive premature engine wear.

  • here in Europe, we have those with the brilliant 2.7 mercedes cdi engine.. No issues what so ever!! :)

    Good car!

And btw, can somebody plz define "blown up engine" ??? I mean.. if its blown up, howcome it can still run?

It might be a silly question.. But I am really lost there, cuz when I hear about a blown up engine I just think, "dead.. no chance of reparing, no need of even trying to start it.."

I am a huge gearhead though. So I hope for an answer!

P.S sorry for the spelling, no time!

  • @ x2xhellx3x. I'm not a mechanic so I'm not for sure but. The defination varies by person. I{think most ppl} consider a "blown motor" one that has blown a rod and/or piston. It may still run like this one but on less cylinders. A seized motor on the other hand, is a motor that is locked and dosn't run at all. usually from being run with no oil or having clunky oil in it. Hope this helps!

  • I know a lot of people that have had tons of problems with these cars. But i believe the v-8 models have far more issues. I try to avoid anything made by Diamler-Chrysler lol

  • your right that I have a 01 4.0{the only positive thing about it} and it has alot of issues but the engine hasn't been a issue like it is in the V8s corse its not a Chrysler engine either. The V8s also have more sophisticated 4x4 systems and computer which causes more issues as well. The only thing Chryslers has going for them is looks thats it. AVOID them at all cost, I learned it the hard way. lol

  • Darn Shame.....taken care of, that engine should go 300K. At least that is what I've been told. Mine only has 115K and purrs like a kitten. 6IL 4.0

  • its that dam bp gas

  • GM would call that normal piston slap and send you on your way.

  • That's terrible...i myself had a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee til not very long ago, and when i sold it was still running strong with 127,000 miles on it....and i drive ALOT, like all over florida...whoever had this particular Jeep just didn't care, that much is obvious just by looking at the interior

  • Better get that "check engine" light checked out.

  • pedal to the metal and destroy that shit

  • "Did you remember to change the oil honey?"...."No the salesman at the dealership says it does it automatically when it needs to be changed".....Could you just imagine?

  • Its an Inline 6 that is just so bad to hear and engine like that. I own a 1993 Jeep Cherokee with 207720 miles on it and my engine don't sound as bad as this vehicle

  • ooo sounds like a deisel lol!

  • like watching a humane society ad with an abused jeep instead of abused animals. :(

  • what a shame. my wife's jeep has over 170,000 miles on it and never had to do anything to it, still running strong. Just keep the oil changed in it every 3000 miles.

  • @natsscc Yea thats true my 200 jeep gc has 173,000 on it and it still runs fine

  • @chathamshawn jeeps last forever, we had one come to work (tire shop) and it had 463,000 miles on it. Most ive ever seen on any thing.

  • @Spawnz0t Cool its all in how you take care of it

  • Yea it would be best just to buy a new block.

  • Id still buy it, i got a whole drivetrain for a cherokee, engine, tranny, transfercase, dryshafts, axles :D

  • That poor Jeep...:( You should put 90 wt. gear oil just for kicks.

  • Congrats on Davidsfarm subscribing to you! He's a great guy, knows a lot about cars!
