Twisted Acid's system is pretty good but not the best ever, gtx290 with i7. But I'm not gunna brag, the game is what is too brag about the graphics and physics are incredible in it.
Want good fps in this game? Make absolutely sure that you have anti-aliasing disabled. Check also in the nvidia (or ati) control panel and make sure that you have aa on "application controlled".
Even if the AA isn't showing, if it is forced in the driver, it causes extreme lag in this game. At least that's what happened with me.
An 8800 or better card will run this on max with a resolution 1280x1024 no problem. Granted you would want something better if you have a higher resolution and/or want to make sure you never go below 40 frames.
My 9800 GT can max it at a constant 40 fps. Maybe you should try turning off AA. This game doesn't really need it, and it supposedly kills performance. Also, make sure to patch it up. I think the latest version is 1.5.0.9 or something like that.
i have turned off anti aliasing! and i have the latest version. My graphiccard is better than yours.. btw, did you max it out in the graphic options, where you can choose "minimum, medium, high, maximum" or something like that?
No. I went through every option in the Advanced settings and turned them to highest. But I kept AA off. Maybe it's my CPU. I have a Q9300 @ 2.5 Ghz. From observing the great AI, I'm guessing this game is intense on the CPU.
I'm running it on a Gateway FX4710 that I got from Bestbuy. I'm going to be replacing my 9800 GT with a GTX 260 Core 216 soon, though. My resolution is 1360x768, by the way. Maybe that's it.
maybe its your resolution, cuz im playing on 1920x1080... ill try it out! (btw, its really strange! cuz i have the gtx 260 black edition, wich is even faster...
Unfortunately, after trying Vista for a while only to get fed up with random BSODs that would give different error codes every time, I moved back to XP and won't have a DX10 OS until Windows 7, so I can't enable volumetric smoke :(
A 2600 will run this game at low-medium at best. You'd want a 4870X2, which I fortunately have, to run this game at DX 10.1 with all bells and whistles at maximum settings.
To play this game at settings this high your budged needs to be far beyond 90 bucks. Maybe you can enable the smoke, but not the great looking shader effects of this game.
i ended up getting ati 2600 apg. hopefully that does the trick. its supposed to support dx10 and cost 90 bucks after rebate. Santa is not too reliable theeeeees days ;)
this isnt particle guys, its a filter of some sort, or maybe not, i dont know.

The system I had before wasn't brag-worthy. It was a mid-ranged, temporary system until I could build my own. My new system is brag-worthy.
GTX260 Core 216 896MB DDR3 - Intel Core i7 @ 2.8 GHz - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Intel X58 LGA 1366 - OCZ 6GB DDR3 - WD 1TB @ 7200rpm - Vista Home Premium 64-bit

turn down the sun rays option, it causes MASSIVE lag in most cases usually in the morning when there most prominment.

Thanks for the advice.
I had like 14 fps on my GTX 280 for no apparent reason, no AA was visible.

It does look more like dry ice than smoke, yet the effect is really stunning O_O
