As a Carpenter here in the U K I really enjoyed your video. You are relaxed on camera and you know what you are doing.I find it really helpful to measure the tread then transfer the measurement to a length of scrap softwood, cut the softwood and then try the fit on the stairs if it is a perfect fit it's simple to lay it on the laminate and mark the length.
The product that you use in this video on installing laminate on stairs is exactly what I am
looking for. Please tell me the brand that you are using. I cannot find this product at Lowe's. I only want it for the stair treads. Thank you very much. Robert
Hi Dominick,My stairs have one side wall and one side spindles and I don't know how to do laminate on the spindle side.if you can show me a video that would be great.thank you so much .
Hi Dominick! I would like to know if you can make a video on DIY installation of an electric wall heater.. (as in it's installed on one wall and is able to heat up both sides of the walls - two rooms) the current one in my condo is not working.. when i turn up the thermostat - only the fan goes on... =(
wanted to know what kind of flooring is that ur using and where did you find ur noseing. also i'm doing my stairs now and ur system seems so easy but i've already removed my nosing is that a problem? One more guestion, on my risers i wanted to put tile instead of that white riser what do you think is that ok!! I would relly appreciate ur thoughts... Thanks in advance..
@AlanMolstad Just go to a flooring store or Home Depot and ask for the stair nosing. You will need that. The floor I used is the same as what you have but mine had a real wood layer on top.
@DominickDiy At the place here in my home town they had something sorta like what you used.
But what is here is real oak wood, and around $29 a step, with another $17 for each riser ...and add to that the extra bull nose for over $6 ...so It is getting out of my budget.
Dominick, I'm a contractor out in Golden, CO. I just wanted to thank you for all your instructional vids you post. Most of it is stuff I've done, but it's a confidence booster to see another tradesman use the same methods. Rock on!
i like your video a lot, very explanatory step by step description. i want to get rid of the carpet on my stairs but am undecided if laminate or solid wood treads (lowes red oak stairtrek). would you have an idea which one would give me longer durability? thanks!
Best part of the video is where you thank your kid the camera man who is your buddy and say God I love my kids. You have a great way about you and it shines through this is something I would expect you to write. Love your vids , keep up the good work.
This is great, but the "wall" part of the stairs is white so you don't have to put laminate there. Is there a way to cover that part with laminate as well? We have bare wood and we're wondering how we do the transition on the 90 degree angle from where you step on the step to the back of it.
Thanks for the vid, there aren't many out there about how to do stairs. I'm completely a beginner so this may be a dumb question, but can you use the chop saw when you cut the laminate planks lengthwise also? Just trying to figure out how many different saws I need to rent.
if you never got an answer, you will want to use a circular saw to cut length wise. The chop saw or mitre saw is only good for cutting things with relatively short widths and on angles.
I was wondering how to do the outside edge of open stairs? I have an old house I am renovating and have a staircase with 3 open stairs prior to the rest of the steps being enclosed. I will give it a shot doing it with the best common sense I can see. If I have a camera handy, I will post a video response if it comes out wel.
nice work, but what happens on the top step when everyone can see the round nosed original stair tread because the laminate stair nosing isn't as thick?
GREAT video. I have been told repeatedly that I could never do laminate on regular stairs. This was easy to understand, thorough, and makes me excited to give this a try! Thanks for doing this video!!!
Hi Dominick, thanks for posting this video. I can finally prove to my carpenter that stairs CAN be laminated. I have one question though: What did you use to finish off the edge of the top stairs that lead to the hall way? A bullnose piece as well, or a metal edge? My hallway flooring is already complete and nailed down. :o Thank you!
@mangorbe Jigsaw is one way to remove the old round edge (bullnose) use a miter saw as Dom has used for the finished peices to keep them square or it will look like crap in the End.. But hey This i Doms thread ;) cheers
The Manufacture was a dumb ass. You allways cut the Bullnose off of the old stair to make it square. Then you put your bull nose on. I allways cut it square to the kicker then do it., Glue the rest as you did. PLP is the best. But good vid.
@ajmaxx01 That's a hard one to answer without seeing it. But for the most part no. That's too much wood that need to move. Smaller stairs like 3 feet wide gluing is fine. This would also depend on if and how your flooring locks into the stair nosing
I have one stair that is freestanding. Is it possible to do the guard with the lip on all three sides? Or how can I finish the cut ends so it doesn't look homemade?
Hay Dominick, I searched all over the internet for some assistance with this project; and your the only one that is clear and to the point. Oh and the ending credits . . .
''My Buddy, my son'', kind of brought a tear to my eye. My Son also is my best friend on the job and he is going into the Coast Guard. Dam! I do not know what I am going to do without him! GREAT VIDEO!
@BobbyBeanandMinime I'm so sorry for the delay for replying to you. I just been so busy. Thank you very much, yea I have three great boys now. One of them at one point wanted to join the coast Guard but things just changed as they say. Thanks again..
@TheFloorfitter I have done lots and lots of them. Yes it is popular her in NY. however I rather have carpet because the laminate on stairs is just to slippery
We are installing laminate stairs and our laminate stair nose piece does not fully wrap around our star edge so our round edge of the stair still shows. How do we handle this? Thank you in advance!!!
@0618dancarrie - some manufacturers require u to cut that round edge of, then use a strip of laminate on the face before installing the stair nosing, but every manufacturer is different.
Dominick? One more quick question. Each stair step on my stairs overhangs the stair front by 1/4" to 3/8". How do I laminate each one without it being at an angle? Should I install them double thick to match up to the tread overhang? Or should I get some cheap 1/4" plywood to put down as an underlayment?
Dominick! You've inspired me. I fired my contractor two years ago and he left me with unfinished laminate stairs. Some quick questions please? I have a closet full of everything. Will a 10 in. Miter work just as well as a chop saw? How did you cut the back piece of each stair lengthwise? A band saw? What can I use to make a precision cut so I will not have to put in trim molding? Andddddd...a big and...if I am laminating each stair front, then which should overlay which? TIA for your help.
Thanks again for another wonderful video! I was hoping to see some more videos and you uploaded 3 this weekend, Christmas came early!! Awesome job on the stairs!!!
Thanks.. Yea I just been busy doing the work.. Hope to get some more out soon. But running out of ideas, LOL.. Or if I have the idea I just don't have the job to do on. Oh well.. Merry Christmas

I have many questions about doing this flooring.
I hope you still answer comments left here?
My situation is that I dont have a wall to go against on one side..
The left side has a wall, but my right side is totally open and seen.
How can i do this with the edges showing all the way up the stairs?
AlanMolstad 2 months ago
@AlanMolstad Yes of course I do and would be happy to help. You would need to wrap those corners with the bull nose edge. Cut at a 45 degree.
DominickDiy 2 months ago
@DominickDiy I liked the system you show in this video...
But with that same system, is there a way to cut in a bull nose?
And where would I up here in Northern North Dakota find such a system?
AlanMolstad 2 months ago
@AlanMolstad Just go to a flooring store or Home Depot and ask for the stair nosing. You will need that. The floor I used is the same as what you have but mine had a real wood layer on top.

@DominickDiy another question I have is that with my normal laminate flooring, the stuff is not real wood...
But that seems different than what you use in this video.
You seem to use real wood,,,just a lot thinner than normal oak steps correct?

Why is the nosing a different color? It's obviously much darker then the tread pieces.
