Weight balance and amount of weight may be a contributing factor as well as the amount of power it takes to turn 4 wheels compared to two but that does not make RWDs any faster in general. Not only that but the fact that AWD cars are better with handling and gripping the road on take off for more than obvious reasons. So that about shoots down your argument.

That's why people compare lap times from the Nurburgring. Those lap times are set by factory development drivers in factory stock cars. Unlike Jim who took his ZR1 to VIR or Silverstone and raced Toshiko in his GTR, where one runs r-comps and the other is a retired professional racer.

Now the zr1 could pick up more speed on the turns if it had something better that the current version of active handling. Then GM might turn up the boost. But as it sits the car can't handle anymore power effectively at the ring.
