This is a really great movie and she definitely deserved that award because you truly believe her character and she plays it sooo well, all of them did!
Wow, reading the book and then watching movie was a bad idea. So MANY things were changed, like this scene wasn't done this way in the book. It was better.
@DarlingMyLove I watched the movie about 10 times before I read the book. I too agree that the book is better, and more thorough. But when is there a film adaptation that is better than the book? The movie definitely leaves a lot out, but I find it very interesting how they decided to sum up the scenes in the book...and sort of try to convey a lot of things in a lot less words/time. The film is still one of the best I have ever seen, which is great based off a great book.
@Mspendragon72 yeah, i know. i've seen the movie about a half dozen times. i meant that she didn't answer the question in this clip. great film and great acting. i love when he screams "i ain't no little kid"
i don`t know how to describe it but the pain and the gloom which dominates the whole atmosphere of the movie has so beautifully been passed on that it gets etched on the minds of the viewers for ever and who ever watched this movie with his inner eye can never come out of enigmatic and charismatic effects of this masterpiece
I saw this movie when I was in high school in early 1975 & I remember being absolutely stunned by the acting. Most everyone in the cast (except Nicholson) was unknown at the time & the whole thing--particularly this scene--was just so realistic that I couldn't believe that I was watching a movie w/actors & not the inside of a mental institution. An absolutely brilliant film & probably Nicholson's best role (out of many).
Everything about this movie - the story, the dialogue, the acting, the direction - was fabulous. Unfortunately, it was too good for our own good. This movie was a huge impetus for the whole "rights of the mentally ill" movement of the 70's. It shaped public perception of state mental hospitals and was undoubtedly influential in Carter's policy of abolishment. As a result, our prisons and our street corners are now home for large numbers of mentally ill people. We need to bring them back.
@MrChupacabraLoco fuck off u fucking little prick, women go through everything to give u men what u want- a child and u can get up on ur own fucking ass and make urself a fucking pie i have had enough of pricks like u fuck of!!!!!!!!! DICK HEAD
@Cooleo299 Depends on the guy though. Not men in general, just maybe 60% roughly but i grew up with a father who literally had my mom wrapped around his finger and she hated it. So iit depends on guys personality yyou know?
@MrChupacabraLoco Sorry but....What is wrong with you? Did the 1940's crawl up in your ass and die? That's not what the scene was about and you obviously have some mental issues of your own if you can't figure that out.
Call me a mental case, but I yell that at people, Mr_________ you sit down! I love that line. I love this film. I watched it over and over last week and it doesn't bore me at all. I love the acting. Great film. Better than today's garbage.
Wow, so many great actors! I'd forgotten. Sounds like some serious stuff there. Reminds me of SPRTC & MSH back in that day. Has anything changed? I doubt that very much. I 'm so sorry ....
This version misses the entire explanation of why the cigarettes are being kept from the residents, namely McMurphy has won them all in his crooked card games.
People say Nurse Ratched is hot, but I really like the assistant nurse who sits there looking like she's scared out of her mind. Just her expression and face...she;s beautiful.
On the version I watched, when the guy starts screaming because of the cigarette in his shoe, it shows his face change as he notices the burning sensation and then he starts screaming. On this version, he just suddenly starts screaming out of nowhere.
@CommanderShepard2000 I don't know how many versions there are but I think this is a better version. The scene is even more dramatic because you hear the screaming all of a sudden and you're not prepared for what's coming by a zoom shot of the guy's face. The scene is so rapid, so many things are going on you have almost forgotten about that cigarette until you hear the screams. Whatever the director's original intention was, I think it works much better the way it is edited here
If the point of art is to invoke emotion this is the most artistic scene I've ever watched. I feel fear, pity, hate, amusement & about ten other things every time I watch this.
@BlueYoshiGamer Yes. The part where Nurse Ratched explains to Cheswick that cigarettes have been rationed has been deleted. Also during this deleted scene, we would have seen that Hardings cigarette has ended up in Taber's (Christopher Lloyd) pant cuff. Once Taber realizes this, his smile disapears into a look of confussion, then he screams from pain as the cigarette has burned through to his skin. We are also missing the part where Martini (DeVito) asks, "How we gonna win our money back?"
I'd say Nurse Ratched lost control of the group there. hehe
Seriously, cigarettes and control of the TV remote are huge power plays on the psych ward. This movie is just brilliant, unreal how someone like that nurse polishes her balls by punching a time clock everyday.
I dont wanna see a remake of this, but if there had to be one, i do believe Sam Worthington would fit the role of Macmurphy.. idk why but it seems like a character hes waiting to play and show some real acting skills, but nothing will ever be as good as this movie and no one will ever top these guys performances, but its just a thought
