The movie definitely leaves a lot out, but I find it very interesting how they decided to sum up the scenes in the book...and sort of try to convey a lot of things in a lot less words/time. The film is still one of the best I have ever seen, which is great based off a great book.

I saw this movie when I was in high school in early 1975 & I remember being absolutely stunned by the acting. Most everyone in the cast (except Nicholson) was unknown at the time & the whole thing--particularly this scene--was just so realistic that I couldn't believe that I was watching a movie w/actors & not the inside of a mental institution. An absolutely brilliant film & probably Nicholson's best role (out of many).

This movie was a huge impetus for the whole "rights of the mentally ill" movement of the 70's. It shaped public perception of state mental hospitals and was undoubtedly influential in Carter's policy of abolishment. As a result, our prisons and our street corners are now home for large numbers of mentally ill people. We need to bring them back.

On the version I watched, when the guy starts screaming because of the cigarette in his shoe, it shows his face change as he notices the burning sensation and then he starts screaming. On this version, he just suddenly starts screaming out of nowhere.

The scene is even more dramatic because you hear the screaming all of a sudden and you're not prepared for what's coming by a zoom shot of the guy's face. The scene is so rapid, so many things are going on you have almost forgotten about that cigarette until you hear the screams. Whatever the director's original intention was, I think it works much better the way it is edited here

Also during this deleted scene, we would have seen that Hardings cigarette has ended up in Taber's (Christopher Lloyd) pant cuff. Once Taber realizes this, his smile disapears into a look of confussion, then he screams from pain as the cigarette has burned through to his skin. We are also missing the part where Martini (DeVito) asks, "How we gonna win our money back?"
