@pyr666 perhaps more pertinent, is the way he himself reveals that he didn't know or appreciate many biblical precepts before he had put them into practise. In other words, we aren't good at determining "which bits" are more or less important. We don't appreciate the 'silly' laws like fabrics, for example, until we have allergies to synthetics. And the bits he decides against (homosexuality, violence) are the socially awkward ones. The ones you'll cop flak for. Interesting experiment tho.
Gal. 3:23-25: “But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor (to lead us) to Christ, that we may be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. " NO MORE (Old Testament) LAW. V. 26 “For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” Everything in the New Testament covenant is by faith, not law.
The title is misleading. He really means, "My year of living Old Testament". If he read the New Testament, he would find that the law is fulfilled in Christ.
Hundred things go right and he is thankful - to who I wonder? God or the mechanics? or the bus drivers?or the electricians? Or he is just thankful that He did not mess them up?
When he talked about the adulturer throwing stones in his face, he should of talked about how you can't exact 'eye for an eye' and 'turn the other cheek'. He had the perfect opportunity to talk about bible contradictions and didn't.
@LondonIrishRover You use the wrong conjunction. Jesus said "BUT" not "AND". Essentially, Christ is saying, "You have heard the OT law of an eye for an eye, BUT I (Jesus) am pointing out that you missed the point entirely. Be kind to one another. Love God and love your fellow human being. These are the first NT commandments" That's the message of Christ, but it's offensive to so many for some reason.
@jcolino3 Probably because of Matthew 5:18 where Jesus says that nothing of Gods law (The OT) will change until all has come to pass. Christians have this strange way of looking at the Bible and think that Jesus was all good and holy, but the OT contains all the horror and punishment and Jesus does not endorse that cruelty at all. He does. Its in the Bible. Jesus is telling us to accept Gods law and listen to him, ergo, 'eye for an eye' AND 'turn the other cheek.' Biblical logic FTW!!
@sickdude197 He doesn't have it backwards. Nor, does he have it right either. Thinking effects behavior. Behavior effects thinking. It's a circular feedback loop. @MaximeMMT@MaximeMMT There are some passages in the bible like this " You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination - Lev 18:22". As a human being and as a believer of Christ, I don't have the right to judge homosexuals if they are going to hell or not, I leave that Judgment to the Almighty. God is a loving God, If homosexuals do know Jesus and are also the followers, they would understand the plans of the Lord for them.
Old testament is the time where Laws are do's and don'ts. New testament is where we live today. Mankind cannot live by do's and don'ts because our nature itself makes mistakes. @777strongcoffee I agree: The Pharisees were law maniacs as well... and Christ didn't approve of their way of life; He put it forth as an example of how not to live. The only way to salvation is Faith in Christ.
Great personality. But I believe he lived the year a Judaist, like how Paul the apostle was (before Paul became a Christian)
Sucks that so many people don't get the point of all those harsh rules in the New Testament...how the culture and context isn't properly taken into account or who the teachings and rules are applied to and how. It's not mental gymnastics, it's common sense. A bit sad many Christians can't explain it well, and it sounds like we're just trying to 'escape reason'.
People need to chill the fuck out about this talk (religious and anti-religious people) This guy did something interesting and pretty funny as an experiment and all I see is a bunch of people making bold inferences about the "message" or moral point.
Sure he gives a few musings on sacredness but nothing to get worked up about. Just enjoy the story of this guys experiment, he is not touting biblical morality nor does he seem have any need for salvation. Great talk, hilarious presentation.

This guy is a clown. His ideas are extreme well beyond the point of learning life lessons or gaining practical experience... this stuff is just for people who want to know how to parade around like an ass.
its sad because he desires sacredness and even wants to start this movement of sacred agnosticism.... it shows that he is desperate in finding meaning in life. Jesus makes our lives come alive, but it is sad that he denies that.
@JanusChristIsRisen lol i thought he'd have a not-so-nasally voice, for some reason. i thought he'd be able to push beyond the stereotypes of a nerdy jewish guy,but i guess he can't. i still enjoy his writing though lol
@marcostwin91 LOL, perhaps this is why Muslims wash their nose so frequently, they did not want to sound like jews ^^.....unfortunely mohamed watched too many action movies (well the equivalent fighter stories) in his time, he should have choosen better friends, like some greek dudes talkin about science
@QuantumProphet what mahamed teaches is same like torah but you talk without knowing and you talk about greek philosophy but you r not logical with how you read or reason with islam learn dude and seek wisdom philosophers are just and wise
@muhubo A philosopher must read in the details, not the general gibberish....Maimonides teaches Torah, also the average Jeovah withness....the difference is in the details....In general, of course muhamed teaches the same as in Torah (one God), the difference is ....Muslims follow a set of rules mimicking the biblical commandments, however their version is such that it promotes hatred . . . .YOU read in the details fellow, I am tired of explaining hem
@QuantumProphet you said we mimic the bible no its god who gave the same law to all humans because we r all same and you said we have hatred no that's lie look at the history of Islam and Christianity who was more warmonger and created genocides the west have been lying about Islam since 12 century
@muhubo I dont care about Islam and Christianity, both religions are full of shit and are a blasphemy to God, your prophet was a paedophile, do you think God really wants you to follow his example?. THINK
@ Quantum Prophet Muhammed is not paedophile but you just said what your hear in the society you live in and i don't blame you read biography of Muhammed
@QuantumProphet At least some normal greek friends would have made a difference :) instead of those deviant sex maniacs 9 year old sex addicts he must have gotten
Jews do not "read" the Bible literally--every law in the Torah, as every word in its original Hebrew is subject to commentary. The laws mentioned here are in fact the subject of entire tractates of talmudic discussion and commentary which is on-going to the present. This means that the laws in the Torah are not enacted exactly as they are written, but rather principles of conduct are learned from them. Being Jewish fortunately or for some, unfortunately, requires learning!
@QuantumProphet --exactly right--the Torah is the most encoded text in all of civilization--there is the written law and the oral law--absolutely nothing can be understood w/out the oral law. That's why learning is central to Jewish observance.
@QuantumProphet exactly. this is the beauty of it. And that itself is another sign, when not followed by thought and reflection and study, it is all nonsense, same with life!, we ought to meditate, reflect and study before doing.....
@adambetzelem EXACTLY, and this is the seal of truth of Judaism, a religion that does not enforce OBEDIENCE TO THE LAW per se, rather SENSIBILITY and hard study, to struggle with the idea of God and reach UNDERSTANDING and comprehension. Another seal of truth is that Judaism forces you to grow and accept a trascendental God that does not have a body, and who reveals truth in the natural world.....It is not a caricature like the God of Islam . . . Sorry muzzies
Mr Jacobs, it was fun listening to your experience of "living biblically". The request not to mix fibers, like many other things that believers were supposed to keep pure, meant not to lead a life of mixed values. Do not hitch an ox and a donkey means not mix with people with different principles. I am stunned nobody knew the explanation. There IS a living God, Mr. Jacobi. Read the New Testament and find the PRINCIPLES. Stop messing with fibers. AND TAKE THEM ALL. No picking allowed.
@monicastinghe and the request to avoid seats menstruated on? The biblical 'fact' that men with long hair are clearly bad men? Please stop. From one confused believer to another, arguing for or against is ridiculous until we have a photo with the real jesus on our facebook default photo, or a monkey evolving on oprah. This is a one sided point he's making but at least he throws a message of tolerance, thats the most anyone can ask for at this point.
@TheWeekendWar sorry, i'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. I was simply saying it is not the LETTER of the law that one should abide by, but the SPIRIT. Let's not dwell 2 much on Old Test rules, some were simply 4 hygiene or decent living, meant to make Jews cleaner and more civilized nation. The point is, we must look at Jesus, his life, his deeds, his words, the spirit of all. He was indeed a troublemaker in his age. He broke some traditions, but he fulfilled the SPIRITof the law.
I liked the book and the talk mostly as entertainment. The portion not geared to entertain was, for me, much more interesting. What he learned about how his behavior changed his way of being internally, for example. The picking and choosing conclusion, while correct ( I think), seemed a little shallow in it's substantiation. It's a big issue deserving more thought and insight.
Rofl, so basically this guy is showing how much we need a savior from the little sins that rule our lives. He even said it himself he couldn't not go a day without sinning. There's some more proof that we all need some Jesus in our lives. Oh and btw with the new covenent with jesus we dont follow all the laws of the old testament, most of those were cultural and for hte jews. So anyone reading this book are watching this thinking the bible is crazy, you should probably do some research yourself.
Also of course no one could live the bible perfectly, only Jesus could and he did. He showed us how to life our lives right and because we fall short of that perfection it shows that we need him to teach us how to live the lives God calls us to live.
@gameover254286 No, it just means that one part of the bible is mental and that a later part of it contradicts the earlier part. That's hardly a justification for the original mental.
Having used all my characters, I shall post again.
Anyway, I say that both of you missed the point of the book.
I personally have very much enjoyed his books. They are full of wit and humor and wonderful questions about life........ I really want to say more here, but I can't think of how else to describe them; they're that good.
@LinuxShogoki and @takigan So you say, but what says that the bible is meant to be taken figuratively(and he does say that the bible isn't meant to be taken literally). Anyway, as far as I know, there is no place in the bible that says that it is NOT meant to be taken literally.
And also, he explains that he is an agnostic, so it makes sense that some of the things would be self-fulfillment. Of course he didn't fallow many of the harmful rules. I mean, who expects him to do something illegal
great...double post. oh no!!!! but yeah, i think he took things too literally. i mean what the whole NT is based on is you love jesus, and the rest will come naturally. of course no one will be perfect, thats a guarantee. but the goal is to pursue it earnestly.
The guy is totally missing the point. Every single facet of the bible he followed was for the sake of self-fulfillment; "What's in it for ME?". But that is not the purpose of all those rituals, that is not the purpose of the Bible. He explained how in his picking and choosing he made it a point to avoid the harmful, yet followed the simple, pointless stuff (clothes, beard) to the point of stupidity. That's such a feelgood way of following the Bible, and not at all fulfilling. No pain, no gain.
@takigan The point of his experiment was to find out what his life would be like living litterally according to the rules that he found in the bibel, and not just the old testament, any edition he could get his hands on - the ******* bible of hip hop as well. In other words; he is an agnostic making an impossible experiment, with more than a little bit of humorous overtones, and you complain that he isn't whipping himself? Re-watch, re-think, re-write - god speed. ;)
The difference is one guy is supposedly immoral for wearing mixed fabrics, the other one a child is celebrating a birthday. This guy has idiotic logic.
he tried to legalize faith and gained no understanding of what is taking place. How is he any diffrent from anyone else that learns how to behave and takes the knowledge for profit.
here is what he basically said he picked and choosed what he wanted to do. he dabbled on the edge
there is no point in following the rules if you dont belive. the old testiment rules arent ment to save people if they could there wouldnt be a need for Jesus.
I think one of the most important and interesting points he makes for me is that Behaviour will affect thinking. I mean this isn't new or profound, but I think it's something that people tend to forget. Want to be more thankful? Give thanks. Thank you AJ!
ctd... I would encourage people to look at all religions critically, and seriously consider their teachings in the context of 21st century society. I think laughing off the bad stuff is just ignoring some major issues in the world.
Entertaining, but I dont agree with the message. As iliketoUSEmybrain017 pointed out, you can do (and in fact to some extent its in our nature) all the good things without the bible or any religious text, which saves you the time of all this picking and choosing... Also, stoning adulterers and similar horrific ideas might get an easy laugh, but in parts of the world people believe in such things and thats very worrying.
interesting talk although it had two sticking points for me. first of all, there have been many studies concerning i.q. and religiosity. the results overwhelmingly point to the fact that the more religious a population is, the lower the i.q.
(nyborg 2008, Poythress 1975, etc.)
secondly, all the "good" things the author encourages us to pick and choose from the bible, (altruism, the golden rule, etc.), preexisted the bible.
they are observations in the bible, not from the bible.
First point: Just because the general population decreases their I.Q. doesn't mean that every member of that population has a lower I.Q.
Second: This does not make the Bible any less meaningful. If it is the only book the some people read and get this 'good' knowledge from, then it has served a very good purpose very well.
I think AJ's upper lip never moves, hence the funny voice. I'm enjoying reading all three books at my leisure and taking pause (sometimes for weeks) to ponder what he writes.
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished."
I think with the one statement he destroys religion and science. Man from mars observing a person wearing wool or cotton and another man blowing out birthday candles on a cake.
He points out how people who follow science view those who believe in religon to be odd. His statement about how a creature not from this world would observe someone blowing out candles on a cake and someone wearing only wool would both look odd. At least that is what I recall since I viewed and made my comment weeks ago.
An excellent video. And it gives me a lot of great food for thought, when it comes to my own religion and how hard I should -- or shouldn't -- try to follow all of the Scriptures of my religion!
Hey, my class watched this video in school today, in Divinity class or R.E, and its cool the way you have pushed yourself and explored the Bible, and even though im agnostic, i find it interesting.
I finished this book this AM, and the only thing I can really take from the book, other than the pleasure of having read an entertaining book, is that there is no possibility for divine inspiration of the bible.
Why would a book be divinely inspired only to be rendered out of date and inapplicable in 20 centuries?
Great speech. I'm Christian and in the middle of reading The Year of Living Biblically for the second time. I think AJ is pretty respectful of the topic and admitting some good can come out of it. Well done mate.
AJ Jacobs is what he says he is: humble, egomaniacal, silly, serious, lucky to have Julie, dedicated, more Jewish than he admits (I'm of the tribe, so this is not anti-semitism), the smartest man on earth, the dumbest dip on the planet, a guy with a voice reminiscent of Truman Capote minus drawl (or the arrogance and self-importance), a man deeply aware of the inescapability of human flaw (perfection being an illusion), nice guy, a workaholic, lazy shmoe, & more. I read it all. Give me more.
In his newest book The Guinea Pig Diaries, AJ Jacobs says that he sometimes logs onto YouTube to read the comments of videos of him, such as this one. AJ, if you read this, know that I LOVE YOUR WORK! And not just in the way you heard it in your Noah Taylor appearance.
I find it hilarious when Christians start lecturing skeptics about what the Bible "really" says, and how the New Testament makes it all sensible. Am I the only one who read the version of the New Testament that has stories about a guy who could control the weather and change the molecular structure of water with his mind? And let's not forget reanimating decomposing corpses, his own and others'.
My take on the video was that the point of Jacobs' exercise was to demonstrate how ludicrous it is to try to live by the letter of a work of Bronze Age mythology. And numerous Christians have weighed in, in the comments section, to say that you have to interpret the Bible differently now. I disagree. I think that anyone who is a Christian, and thinks the Bible is a transcript of the mind of god, might be encouraged to rethink his or her position on the issue after watching this hilarious video.
Homosexuality is a SIN!! You cant pick and chose your religion, you either believe or don't believe. There is no cafeteria religion. I wanted to read this book of yours, but I have decided that it is now a waste of my time!
That's funny. I thought the same thing. I'd look up videos of this guy, because he's pretty awesome and I love his books. And then I thought - hey! He reads comments. So he's gotta read mine. Right? (Pretty irrational.)
I left a comment on his MySpace, like, three months ago. Anyway, it's still like four comments down. So either it's not him and I got the impostor one, or people don't leave comments for him too often.
Whatever. He's my hero. Which is a little weird. Oh well.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I am reading his book now, it is very obvious that he is a funny guy, but you can not just decide to live biblically, if you have not accepted Christ as your Saviour, you are doing it in vain. I am a Christian, and there is no way I or anyone else could live 100% biblically in this day and age, it is impossible, but you can try to live a good moral life to the best of your ability. I try to live one as much as I possibly can, but being human, I have my moments when I am less than Christian.
hits the nail on the head and misses the mark some..... but a great experiment ..funny guy... brave too... i wish i had the dough to do these experiments
He finds throughout his experiment that many of the things in the Bible are true: the tenets of faith make him happier, make him feel like a better person, etc.
Is it enough to get him to truly consider the faith? If it's so great, why stay an agnostic?
because it doesn't matter how good of a moral guidance the bible might be to some people (though it's actually terrible if you include everything). the story is still ridiculous and the premises upon which christianity is founded are all still false and actually offensive to one's intelligence
I love AJ! I am currently reading "The Know-it-All." I love it, and I keep reading different sections to my parents, etc. I am looking forward to reading "The Year." He is a very interesting, smart, funny man. Great job, AJ!
He seems like a nice enough man, however his experiment does little more than to confirm what most people in that audience were probably thinking, the bible is ridiculous. There are some nice things in it to be sure, however I took notice of the fact that he omits all of the passages in the bible that endorse brutal violence against almost all who are not like minded. The exception being of course his humorous encounter with the adulterer.
kudos, nice comment, plus i feel that maybe he didn't go harsh enough on the stuff he covered, but he really did put an undeserved positive look on religion.

Great talk, hilarious presentation.

its sad because he desires sacredness and even wants to start this movement of sacred agnosticism.... it shows that he is desperate in finding meaning in life. Jesus makes our lives come alive, but it is sad that he denies that.

Being Jewish fortunately or for some, unfortunately, requires learning!
adambetzelem 1 year ago
@adambetzelem Torah is quite a difficult book!, its as if it was designed to be madness when followed by a not knowing public,
QuantumProphet 1 year ago
@QuantumProphet --exactly right--the Torah is the most encoded text in all of civilization--there is the written law and the oral law--absolutely nothing can be understood w/out the oral law. That's why learning is central to Jewish observance.
adambetzelem 1 year ago
@QuantumProphet exactly. this is the beauty of it. And that itself is another sign, when not followed by thought and reflection and study, it is all nonsense, same with life!, we ought to meditate, reflect and study before doing.....
QuantumProphet 1 year ago

QuantumProphet 1 year ago
@monicastinghe and the request to avoid seats menstruated on? The biblical 'fact' that men with long hair are clearly bad men? Please stop. From one confused believer to another, arguing for or against is ridiculous until we have a photo with the real jesus on our facebook default photo, or a monkey evolving on oprah. This is a one sided point he's making but at least he throws a message of tolerance, thats the most anyone can ask for at this point.
TheWeekendWar 1 year ago
@TheWeekendWar sorry, i'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. I was simply saying it is not the LETTER of the law that one should abide by, but the SPIRIT. Let's not dwell 2 much on Old Test rules, some were simply 4 hygiene or decent living, meant to make Jews cleaner and more civilized nation. The point is, we must look at Jesus, his life, his deeds, his words, the spirit of all. He was indeed a troublemaker in his age. He broke some traditions, but he fulfilled the SPIRITof the law.
monicastinghe 1 year ago
I liked the book and the talk mostly as entertainment. The portion not geared to entertain was, for me, much more interesting. What he learned about how his behavior changed his way of being internally, for example. The picking and choosing conclusion, while correct ( I think), seemed a little shallow in it's substantiation. It's a big issue deserving more thought and insight.
098anne 1 year ago
Rofl, so basically this guy is showing how much we need a savior from the little sins that rule our lives. He even said it himself he couldn't not go a day without sinning. There's some more proof that we all need some Jesus in our lives. Oh and btw with the new covenent with jesus we dont follow all the laws of the old testament, most of those were cultural and for hte jews. So anyone reading this book are watching this thinking the bible is crazy, you should probably do some research yourself.
gameover254286 1 year ago
Also of course no one could live the bible perfectly, only Jesus could and he did. He showed us how to life our lives right and because we fall short of that perfection it shows that we need him to teach us how to live the lives God calls us to live.
gameover254286 1 year ago
@gameover254286 No, it just means that one part of the bible is mental and that a later part of it contradicts the earlier part. That's hardly a justification for the original mental.

I mean, who expects him to do something illegal
anon13926 1 year ago
great...double post. oh no!!!! but yeah, i think he took things too literally. i mean what the whole NT is based on is you love jesus, and the rest will come naturally. of course no one will be perfect, thats a guarantee. but the goal is to pursue it earnestly.
LinuxShogoki 1 year ago
The guy is totally missing the point. Every single facet of the bible he followed was for the sake of self-fulfillment; "What's in it for ME?". But that is not the purpose of all those rituals, that is not the purpose of the Bible. He explained how in his picking and choosing he made it a point to avoid the harmful, yet followed the simple, pointless stuff (clothes, beard) to the point of stupidity. That's such a feelgood way of following the Bible, and not at all fulfilling. No pain, no gain.
takigan 1 year ago
@takigan good insight.
LinuxShogoki 1 year ago
@takigan The point of his experiment was to find out what his life would be like living litterally according to the rules that he found in the bibel, and not just the old testament, any edition he could get his hands on - the ******* bible of hip hop as well. In other words; he is an agnostic making an impossible experiment, with more than a little bit of humorous overtones, and you complain that he isn't whipping himself? Re-watch, re-think, re-write - god speed. ;)

ctd... I would encourage people to look at all religions critically, and seriously consider their teachings in the context of 21st century society. I think laughing off the bad stuff is just ignoring some major issues in the world.
gaussian 1 year ago
Entertaining, but I dont agree with the message. As iliketoUSEmybrain017 pointed out, you can do (and in fact to some extent its in our nature) all the good things without the bible or any religious text, which saves you the time of all this picking and choosing... Also, stoning adulterers and similar horrific ideas might get an easy laugh, but in parts of the world people believe in such things and thats very worrying.
gaussian 1 year ago 15
interesting talk although it had two sticking points for me. first of all, there have been many studies concerning i.q. and religiosity. the results overwhelmingly point to the fact that the more religious a population is, the lower the i.q.
(nyborg 2008, Poythress 1975, etc.)
secondly, all the "good" things the author encourages us to pick and choose from the bible, (altruism, the golden rule, etc.), preexisted the bible.
they are observations in the bible, not from the bible.
iliketoUSEmybrain017 1 year ago 4
First point: Just because the general population decreases their I.Q. doesn't mean that every member of that population has a lower I.Q.
Second: This does not make the Bible any less meaningful. If it is the only book the some people read and get this 'good' knowledge from, then it has served a very good purpose very well.

In what way does blowing out birthday candles 'destroy' science.
Bumblybee256 2 years ago
He points out how people who follow science view those who believe in religon to be odd. I finished this book this AM, and the only thing I can really take from the book, other than the pleasure of having read an entertaining book, is that there is no possibility for divine inspiration of the bible.
Why would a book be divinely inspired only to be rendered out of date and inapplicable in 20 centuries?

I find it hilarious when Christians start lecturing skeptics about what the Bible "really" says, and how the New Testament makes it all sensible. Am I the only one who read the version of the New Testament that has stories about a guy who could control the weather and change the molecular structure of water with his mind? And let's not forget reanimating decomposing corpses, his own and others'.
It's called "fiction".
BSproductions45 2 years ago
BS, what in the hell does that have too do with this video?
991med 2 years ago
My take on the video was that the point of Jacobs' exercise was to demonstrate how ludicrous it is to try to live by the letter of a work of Bronze Age mythology. And numerous Christians have weighed in, in the comments section, to say that you have to interpret the Bible differently now. I disagree. I think that anyone who is a Christian, and thinks the Bible is a transcript of the mind of god, might be encouraged to rethink his or her position on the issue after watching this hilarious video.

He finds throughout his experiment that many of the things in the Bible are true: the tenets of faith make him happier, make him feel like a better person, etc.
Is it enough to get him to truly consider the faith? If it's so great, why stay an agnostic?
g4thz 2 years ago
because it doesn't matter how good of a moral guidance the bible might be to some people (though it's actually terrible if you include everything). the story is still ridiculous and the premises upon which christianity is founded are all still false and actually offensive to one's intelligence

The bible is an outdated attempt at morality.
