Our university tuitions continue to climb, so really all that's happening is that the value of these grants are following behind the inflation of education costs today. But if the Federal Government is increasing the grant amounts for these, how are we paying for it? What is getting cut from the federal budget to account for this?

@scbluesman13 before health reform passed, private lenders were getting SUBSIDIZED by the government to offer student loans... which makes no fucking sense, but that's what was going on

the health reform bill removed that subsidization, which 1) took some of the money to pay for health reform and 2) freed up the rest to do things like what this video outlines

@scbluesman13 also, since the loans that the government gives out have interest (very low interest, but still interest) then they can use the profits they make to increase the size of the fund. i think that's how they plan on keeping the loans up-to-date with college tuition. i'm not sure about this though

@Techra That is a nice sentiment to think the gov't will use "profits" to increase the size of a fund to increase loans but that is of course not how the gov't works. The interest on the loans is not enough to generate a profit, this is why gov't needed to subsidize private lenders in the first place. By lowering the years before forgiving the debt, and the max % of income, from 10 to 15, this will operate at a loss but that is really the point as the goal is not to profit

(Education doctorate) degree...she's an adjunct professor of English..and in the past was a high school English teacher..Bottom line it would not be a surprise, at all, if her family income was eligible for low-interest federal loans.
