@TheAhLux, I totally agree, some of the bands being compared were around either before Evanescence or right about the same time. Epica's music is far different and hard to compare to Evanescence's sound. Just enjoy each band for who they are and stop comparing singers constantly.

@FlamingGaming1 Pft, those still around maybe. As a fellow metalhead from America I vouch that there's not that many of us anymore. Far more rap, & pop fans than metal these days. These days if I want to listen to go metal I gotta find a Euro band or an American band that's been around for 30 years. Thank god for the new European bands. I went 10 years thinking music had turned to shit, before I found Nightwish on youtube, and it opened me up to an new genre of metal that exhibits talent.

@pinhead61187 California. There are "metal" bands all over the place too, but I'm sorry I just don't like the latest breed of American metal bands. I don't like death growl of any sort for more than 15 seconds in any song. I don't even like all of Epica or Sirenia's songs because of it, and I certainly won't listen to bands that do only that. Most of the rest are talentless hacks that won't play a harmony or melody because it's too much like "pop". Way to take it to the other extreme morons.

@pinhead61187 I'm really fairly burned out on bands like Megadeth, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, but man, especially with bands like Metallica, the older they get the better they were. I never hear a good baritone singer anymore, and it's most certainly never paired with incredible riffs & solos and a hard edge. James Hetfield for all his other problems, was an incredible singer especially in the 90's and Metallica in the 80's had riffs that were unrivaled.

@pinhead61187 I'm starting to get burned out on female fronted metal bands but I tell'ya these symphonic metal bands were just what I needed. Epica in particular is such a musicians metal band, so full of talent and displaying it on multiple fronts. Epica is incredible. I just wish I could find a band with a male vocalist with a deep rich baritone like that of James Hetfield that could give a SM band a much needed testosterone infused hard edge but still keep the melodic qualities.

@RicoLen1 Apologies if you already answered this and I just did not read far enough back to catch it, but have you tried listening to Kamelot? Although the singer isn't a barritone, he does bring a strong dose of testosterone to the genre.

@voxangelaemortis Yeah, Roy Kahn is great. I didn't mention it, but yeah, he's one of the exceptions for me, the problem is that I just can't find more. I kinda wish Nightwish had just made Marco Heitala their lead singer after they fired Tarja. Marco is unbelievable, both hard and soft singing is amazing.

@TheAhLux I believe it's just because Evanescence is the only Symphonic Metal band that your laymen music listener has heard of, so when they hear a strong female vocalist coupled with heavy metal they just think Evanescence because they had mainstream success.

I literally just shared Solitary Ground (Alternate Version) with a friend of mine that primarily listens to mainstream music, and the first thing she said of Simone Simons was "She sounds like the singer of Evanescence".

Nonetheless they do have some songs in this new album that set them away from the mainstream, right? I'm speaking Martyr Of The Free Word and so on (the Martyr is my personal favourite from the album lol).

They all move as if it's an Evanscene or Avril Lavigne or Linkin Park song.

It's metal IMO, not alternative. Not even melodic death, where hair in the wind and shaking heads etc. are appropriate.
