stagger your floors and the mobs won't take damage on their way to the floor.

Set it so they funnel into a single place with water channels... or funnel them into a lava trap like the vid "Minecraft Mob trap/looting system - Tutorial"

Then just sit back and loot everything as it flows to you.

You could improve upon this by using some water channels to bring all the mobs into a smaller, more concentrated area.

I've just noticed that at 4:55 you can (briefly) see a skeleton kill a creeper, which drops a record.
