  • for anybody who thinks James Wrubel cant play google him and check his web page out, you'll find alot about him this way.

  • you the man. i have looked all over youtube for someone actually playing like this instead of some charts and music notes and crap. props man, much appreciated, do you have any tutorials on those arpegios?

  • wait? Does this teach you how to learn by ear??!

  • @IMasterDanceMusic

    Yes Certainly!

  • Thank you very much for this lesson.. I love it when someone takes his time to teach the rest of us.

  • Thank you James wrubel!!! im a church keyboardist, but i always look at jazz clips for runs and solos. this is just brilliant!

  • maestro, thank you

  • WOWHATS REALLYY Hard PLZ TRy TEaching a little better thx

    good playin though

  • In my opinion most teachers are not the best performance players BUT!!! they are teachers it's up to you to put your own feel to what you are being taught, this guys is giving you some really good information to work with, a pretty good teacher In my opinion, my intention by this post is neutral i'm not trying to sturr up any s%*t just pointing out what I have observed from some of the posts... okay I'll STFU now Have a great day all.....

  • @lamob I liked the stfu part best

  • What is 2-5-1?

  • 2-5-1 = second chord of a key, then fifth chord of a key, followed by the first (root). Check out jazz 101 for a better explaination. It's a fundamental that you MUST know in order to play jazz.

  • do you know any vids on youtube that are good jazz 101 theory instructionals? please help lol

  • @ryancangri Thats normal to use in jazz. You use all the time that sequency for example. The 2-5-1 of "C" the root is Dm9- Gx13 and C69

  • im sure this guy is good enough to know how to play swung, he solos straight over a swung rythm but he is surely aware of this, im not nearly as good as him but playing swung 8ths is like second nature to me. he knows what hes doing.

  • ekim please shut the fuck up this guy is awesome

  • Right.

I see what you mean, but everyone has a right to state their own opinion.

James Wrubel is a Jazz God in my opinion!

    :D

  • Let me tell you what really works for me. I've got a Yamaha xs. In the performance mode there's a "bop til you drop " arpeggiated piano bass and drum. Set the tempo wherever you want. You can practice to your hearts content. Play All your scales over different chords and eventually chord patterns. Not enough space to explain everything but I'm amazed at my progress in doing this. Try it and stick with it and you will see. I have the weighted keys to build finger strength. Get a Fake book

  • god such a bad feel.... contents fine and i know it's supposed to be rudimentary for beginners but man... if you're gonna show em basics make it feel good!

  • Dude...this player has a good feel.. its "modern" not a older bop or swing style.. Plus, dude, its harder to get a good feel on those electric keyboards.. they dont respond like a real piano.. this cat is playing some nice 'out' stuff.. Its not "rudimentary" like you say shank.. you be weird dude.. too critical.. make your own clips then

  • it's not modern. It's simply not grooving. He's playing over a swinging rhythm section track playing standard jazz vocabulary. Nothing about this is "out" as it's all harmonically functional. Diminished licks and playing the V7's with sharp 11's doesn't constitute out. They've been doing that since the beginning of bop. Also playing on an electric keyboard changes your touch, not your ability to swing. If i had a vid camera, i would make my own clips. you want a link to some audio?

  • shank.. i appreciate your point of view..I've been a musician my whole life, and ive come to this: forget catagories, forgot jugements, and have FUN ..Every player is different, and thats what makes it work for me. Sounds like thats a midi type rhythm section..that can swing, but not real deep.. its all good stuff, the impulse to make music is whats important . It all comes out differently for every one.. :)

  • if that's the case, then what's the point of training or improving?

  • good question shank.. we could go further and say hey, whats the point of life? Everyone has to find what works for them.. Being a better player might or might not get you better gigs.. It has to come simply from a love of music, and we all have different priorities.. Its endless shank, and just when you get good at your "BAG" some kid comes a long and does something more "HIP" what ever that means..

  • Who cares - the cat never proclaimed to be going out. Only a tone deaf fool would suggest this cat doesn't play his ass off. Not to mention that he's able to illustrate what he's doing AS he's playing. You should offer a little more respect. The guys puttin' some pretty usable stuff on youtube for free... so what's with the bitter attitude shank

  • you need to look at all comments. I was responding to something not on this page. This video may be free, but this "cat" sells jazz dvds for money. And I'm not a tone deaf fool. I'm a student in one of the top jazz programs in the country so I know what "playing you ass off" is. He;s got a LOT of nice stuff, I was criticizing his feel on parts. I was only responding to comments saying his feel was "modern" and "out" as a justification. I wasn't attacking this guy with that.

  • @irondaddymac

Couldn't agree more,it seems only obtuse, simple minded creatons are so quick to criticize what this cat is doing without no comprehension in the first place!

  • Bad "feel" is a subjective criticism. You're entitled to yours. What I like about all these jazz 201 videos is that he gives you concrete, easy-to-follow examples that sound good when I play them. His feel is irrelevant. My own feel, as I apply them to these licks is what matters and I'm not looking to cop a feel from him! (In any sense!)

  • you are superb!!!!

  • this guy technique but there is no emotion in the song.... and thats what music its about

  • I think he's playing more as an exercise and showing what's possible than building a solo. That's the point here to incorporate different tools of a jazz player rather than construct an emotional solo. And the electronic drums all though good for this, don't help in the emotion department.

  • @andreigeorgecostin agree but this is a lesson,Im sure he puts emotion ina life performance.YOu are right tehre are many automatic players, runs upa nd down, arpegios as if it was classical music.I was watching a band playing jazz standards, they ahd great sound the pianist was great had the right chord arsenal and soloing but he was playing every key with the same intensity volume no matter what.No soul at all

  • yes! this is perfict if u can play by ear like me jus look at what hes playing

  • not very helpul on the surface.

    alot playing no teaching.

  • wow i need to stack up on dvds

  • This guy is sick

  • Solos are hot!

I would have liked to see some of the substitutions you were using in the LH.

  • Great Left Chords!

  • Hey Jazz Kat! Keep up the good work! This great!

  • great

  • 3:54-3:56..superb

  • i could never learn to play piano...too damn difficult for me :) but this guys awesome

  • cool

  • its awesome

  • Superbe - Cool --

  • This is cool...how are you building your chords in your left hand? What key is this in?

  • i think its in G Minor

  • well you can say that its in Bb major and G minor is the relative minor or either it can be called a chromatic mediant

  • it's the first section of Autumn Leaves in the key of G minor.

A great example for showing because it uses the cycle of fifths!
