It's not harder they both use the same style of gameplay, the only difference that makes you think 1.6 is harder is that 1.6 has more veterans than cs:source, almost every server has at least 1 or 2 on 1.6, your lucky to see a amazing cs:source player in public once a week.

however, the head hit boxes are smaller on 1.6. This makes the game feel more difficult ( even tho its not, cos its also disadvantage for the enemies )

yeah playing in cal matches are free you just have to be on a team or start your own and sign up. They schedule the matches for you and everything. Its pretty simple, you find out whos server your on that match and play, thats pretty much your only job besides reporting wins.
