I will put my thoughts. I believe it is to do with the war in Iraq from a citizens perspective(an Iraqi citizen.) "Clouds could never save us" referring to planes with bomb. "It's coming down. There are shadows forming on the pavement" meaning the bombs have been dropped. "Just miles apart but worlds away" talking about first and third world countries being miles apart on the same planet, but within different worlds. "As long as it lands over seas."
It's not simply anti-war. It is certainly that, but more importantly, it's a judgement on the people who take an apathetic stance on war, who don't care as long as it doesn't directly affect them.
I don't know about you guys but I always heard the lyrics as being about the Cold War. He says "just miles apart, but worlds away," Russia is very close to the US (Alaska) but the cultures are two very different worlds. The sky falling is obviously a reference to the Nukes pointed at eachother. He says "surrounded by jingoists," where a jingoist is a person patriotic to the point of violence which sounds like people in the cold war to me.
Im pretty sure this song is about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, probably atomic bombs. Another song by Thrice called "Broken Lungs" is obviously about 9/11. But still this is just my thoughts. :)
@Thrice1stImpression I always thought it was more like the bombing of Dresden then dropping the Atomic Bomb. Hiroshima and Nagasaki didn't really know what was about to happen, nor were they too heavily bombed beforehand.
@Thrice1stImpression Also, it's actually more from a metaphorical standpoint. We're under assault by the media, and by "the hate machine"; no one will lift their eyes to see what is happening above their heads.
@drinkthequicksand I agree with you mate. You made some pretty heavy statements . I love people commenting to discuss their lyrics. The lyrics clearly describe bombings, but again that's just a metaphore. I agree that the lyrics is about the media and how it rules our world, and kinda brainwashes us. "The sky is falling, and none cares along as it lands over seas". I think that they try say that, we as humans are made egoistic and wont care as long as it doesn't have influence on ourselves.
this song reminds me of harold camping
