3:19 that is not good to do in older cars 10+ years beacose they dont have syncro for reverse. .. but duble clutch while shifting is good . i got cranky 3rd gear and i duble clutch and no noise and ruing gear.
i only drive manual because i have to. i would much prefer an automatic. it's much more simple. those who say they would love to drive manual don't know what its like to shift 24/7. it gets really annoying.
and your uphill starts are unsafe.. the best way to do it is to half clutch while foot is on break, and when rpm drops, the car will move forward without giving any gas.
@CurryProd I tried doing that thinking that my car will go forward a bit without putting any gas when first starting it but my car just stalled out. The rpms just dropped and stalled didn't matter if i did it slow
hahaha!! Some reason this came up in my suggestions, total flashback, watched this very video yeeeeeeears ago before my very first driving lesson (UK), passed my test first time XD
You should use your handbrake for hill starts, then you won't roll back at all. Also, when slowing/stopping, the reason for leaving it in gear as long as possible before dipping the clutch is to maintain both engine braking and an intact driveline. This will stop you from locking the wheels (on older cars without ABS) when braking sharply in the wet etc.
so say im in third or fourth gear and im about 300ft from a stop sighn or red light and im going like 65mph do i just pop it out of gear and put it in neutral and just use the brake to slow it down or do i have to shift back to second and first im a lil confused
Gears to transmission is wrong. Gears are in the transmission. When you push the clutch in, you disengage the engine from the transmission (gears), and thus why you can give it gas and stay in place when in neutral or clutch in.
Know what you're talking about before you try to teach people.
Trick is....don't think to much about it all. If you think about it too much, you start to doubt yourself. Let it come to you naturally, and then it's easier :)
i have a question when u drive a stick shift and you are in 3rd or 4th gear do u have to press the clutch in and shift back to 3rd gear and then pres the cluth in again and shift down to second gear and then to first or could u just push in the clutch and put it into nuteral and use the brake to slow the car down ?
Great video, I just started learning so watching this helps. My uncle says I have a habit of releasing the gas once I hit the friction point n that's why I stall.
hey, so i have a 2001 eclpise wich the emergancy break is broke, do i need it for anything besides parking up a hill? please anyone can give me the answer. thanks.
Watching this really really helped me out learning how to drive stick for the first time and I could mentally prepare myself and it made everything so much easier. The tips for driving uphill help out a lot, too :)
u were right in the first video. the clutch doesnt engage the gears to the transmission. the clutch engages the engine to the gears which are within the transmission. the gears turn the wheels essentially.
the clutch does not engage the gears to the transmission it disconnects the transmission from the engine cutting of the power flow and allowing you put it into gear.
Hill starting? Why not just use the handbrake then you don't have to move your right foot from the brake to accelerator. That move is very tricky for a learner so handbrake would be the safest way to learn.
I taught myself to drive stick with this vid and then to doubleclutch/rev match with your other vids. that was a couple years ago. I will never drive a stick incorrectly ever again :D
@SoldierCyfix yeah you dont actually need the clutch but you have to be dirty at rev matching in order to get the engine speed equal to the transmission speed. its hard and comes with a ridiculous amount of driving experience. they do this a lot in racing
if you step on the gas while releasing the clutch can you release the clutch faster without stalling? my instructor always thought me to use the "release clutch till friction point then only add gas" which is really slow and kinda made me fail my driving test :(.
@AvatardMH technically thats how youre supposed to do it, find friction and then add gas but my dad has always taught me to give it gas as you release the clutch it works just fine in my opinion. finding the friction point will only get people honking at you it takes too long
@misterj4mz Thanks. Your right. In fact, thats how I failed the test. I took too much time trying to find the friction point of the examination cars clutch and stalled out many times. Also, the examiner complained that I was TOO SLOW. I guess I will use this method next time. But does it somehow make driving the manual car easier?
@AvatardMH the only thing that makes it easier is experience and practice...a lot of it haha. but i found that it does make things a little easier because adding gas as you release the clutch just gives more power to the engine so it isnt overcome by the weight of the car.
@misterj4mz Ah. Thanks. The examination car is a lot bigger than my instructors car. Maybe thats why I was so slow with the method my instructor thought me. Shall try adding gas before I release the clutch. Thanks!
@AvatardMH No problem! Thats too bad you cant use your own car for the test. Where i live in new york we have to bring our own cars to the test, it makes things a little easier.
My instructor taught me that I should accelerate after i've released the clutch. That means I had to find half-clutch all the time. No wonder I had such a hard time...
Hey thanks for the video's i just started driving stick &by seeing your videos i'm learning really quick..and uphills is a challenge but i'm getting better..i burned out a couple times going up hill from stop lights and stop signs lol and cops were around but nothing happened :)..
well my driver teacher teach on uphill, you can release half of clutch (not full) while pushing the break, then release the break then push the gas, it doesn't make your car going backward, is this ok ? or must do as you say push the clutch all the was instead of open it half way, thanks
Hey man I am curious when you drive stick when you are about to shift into 2 gear at what rpm is good to shift my friend said at 3000 rpm you can change the gears, also when you down shift is there a certain rpm you want to shift at?
@dodocrest yeah thats what automatic shifting cars are for, but the automatic cars are a little... "weak", and in uphills starts you can feel that the car needs more gas, for that the clotch becomes useful. you can accelerate the engine before start moving, on my country is very useful.
Im buying my first car tomorrow and it happens to be a stick. When Im down-shifting say to a red light, im in 3rd I should shift into 2nd and then into netrual?
@crazypeopleeverywear I've been through Skip Barber a couple times, and this is what the instructors say: Don't go crazy with the downshifting to slow the car. Maybe go down to 3rd, and by the time the revs drop to about 1000 rpm, you'll be going pretty slow, slow enough to just brake to a stop. So drop in in N at that point. The brakes are designed to stop the car, not the engine. When approaching a curve, downshift into the gear you'll need to exit the curve, usually 3rd, maybe 2nd.
@crazypeopleeverywear no say youre driving in 4th gear. you see a stop light. you begin to slow down. depress clutch as late as possible without stalling. when youre stopped and have clutch depressed, put the shifter in first. you do not need to down shift as you come to a stop.
@multizogi well, i was 9 years old when i started driving manual transmission ;) ;) - today, im 17 :) - lol, you should see my youngest brother...gash, he is only 7! AND HE CAN DRIVE A MANUAL CAR!!! WTF!!! - But congratulations! :)
@DaveNeroII He mentioned it. Break without clutch is ok when you're in neutral, but when you're in gear, you have to hold the clutch down because otherwise, the car would stall.
@DaveNeroII its fine. because ur not gonna stall until your rpms get too low. u can slow down the car without the car without stalling just make sure u shift intro neutral before ur rpms get to the 1 on the odometer.
@DaveNeroII break without clutch = if u break it ,your engine is stopped,(if Gear is not free),if free gear and u break without clutch then your engine still running
@DaveNeroII yeah u can just put it in neutral/depress clutch when it starts to vibrate. you can break in gear w/o clutch as long as it doesnt stall. its just good to keep it in gear as long as possible in case you need to swerve/add gas to do something
@DaveNeroII well you can't really break with your clutch, the clutch cuts off the engine from the transmission this means that if you are uphill and press the clutch the car will slow, or if you are in traffic you can press the gas and only control the speed of the car with the clutch, the harder you press it the slower it will go, if it's to the metal it wont move at all, and if it's downhill it can actually make the car go faster if it's a heavy car manual cars have better control
@DaveNeroII It is okay... but it puts a hefty amount of strain on your drivetrain. In both cases, if you are coming to a stop, you have to put the clutch in either way. I always do, just as habit.
@DaveNeroII yess just make sure you hold the clutch in before the revs drop to low otherwise you will stall.. stalling doesn't hurt the engine but it is annoying haha :D
Depending on your car, you can also balance your clutch. That's the way I learned. But great vid. I haven't driven stick for awhile, so it was a good refresher.
Ur vids are very usefully when I got into my dads car so he could teach me how to drive manual before he even said any thing I took off and he was extremely shocked so thanks for your help
why in both videos he forgets to say let go of the gas when up shifting? and you must be a shit driver if you take the time to do all that breakin in an emergency and can thro the e break then start shifting? this is easier guys let go of gas shift to neutral and break
Thanks ALOT! this video shows a lot! being a visual learner im sure its helped many people including myself.lol I may be 22, but a LOT of people do not drive stick anymore...
@PGROSYE02 It IS hard, LOL But I survived my first day, LOL i was kinda caught offguard because my instructor let me drive right away after some infos about the basics before switching on the car and pedals . Wish me luck everyone. I get mental block while driving HAHAHAH
@crystalanddavid1 You can, but like the video explained, you might need to speed up if the light changes to green or someone cuts in front of you and you need to accelerate around them; Then you can just go instead of having to shift in gear and then go.
@crystalanddavid1 If you put the car in neutral you're free to do whatever you want. You can do it that way. You can also just press the clutch and keep it pressed the entire time you're braking, then move to first to take off again after you stop. Or you can actually use the engine to brake by braking normally and also shifting down gears as you slow to help you stop.
@ScottXC91 the life of your transmission is dramatically decreased when you rely on it to stop the car. thats what your brakes are for. the cost of replacing brake pads is insignificant to replacing a transmission.
using the handbrake is prefered although if your feeling confident and have good clutch controll for short stops you can practice holding the car on the clutch then when its time to go just drive on no idea if it fucks the clutch up its just somethign i used to do on driving tests when i needed to get moving quickly on a hill
@blackdemonpwns same for the uk its not to hard imo ok its dificult at first but sholdnt take more than a hour to get moving and a few lessons to start getting to the point where you can hop in any car and drive it without having any problems thats the major hurdle getting used to driving cars with different clutches some bite earlier some bite later some arnt fusyy some want you to be dead on its all things you learn in a reasonable amount of time i hate driving auto on my scooter its boring
well when stopping i typically push in the clutch put in neutral and brake. and when you shift gears lets say from first to second i like to give 0% into throttle and 100% clutch switch gears then let it all the way out then giving it gas
great vid buddy, but i got a question: how many rpm do you suggest before changing into the next gear? in my driving lessons they told me to shift from 1 to 2 at about 1500-1800 and at 1500-1800 from 2 to 3 and from then on at about 2000rpm. how many do you use? :)
@Nightskybebop depends on what engine your car has. i usually shift gear at 1500 and if i want to skip a gear i shift at 2000. take in consideration that if the road is tilted upwards the enigine need more rpm to be able to shift gear properly.
ur showing them how to do and up hill on ot that sttep of a hill do it o a rilly steep i tryed and my dad told me to do it quick ii went back a lil more than lik a foot or two and he showed me and hes been driving stick his whole life with 18 wheelerd trucks and anything u can think off
or instead of sitting on the footbrake and taking the risk of going back a little and hitting someone or something, why not just apply your handbrake, build up the revs, bring out your clutch til biting point and then release the handbrake.

Depending on your car, you can also balance your clutch. That's the way I learned. But great vid. I haven't driven stick for awhile, so it was a good refresher.

Ur vids are very usefully when I got into my dads car so he could teach me how to drive manual before he even said any thing I took off and he was extremely shocked so thanks for your help
deemaster1000 1 month ago
so when you change gear do you have to let go of the gas?
KidFrom106 1 month ago
@KidFrom106 you dont have to but it will make it smoother if you let off a little so you dont rev the engine more than it has to be
hitte123 1 month ago
@KidFrom106 yes. if you keep your foot on the gas when you depress the clutch the rpms will jump really high because there is no more resistance

Can you show ne when you stop on uphill and downhill slope,
oybek91 1 month ago
why in both videos he forgets to say let go of the gas when up shifting? and you must be a shit driver if you take the time to do all that breakin in an emergency and can thro the e break then start shifting? this is easier guys let go of gas shift to neutral and break
basshead116 2 months ago
Thanks ALOT! this video shows a lot! being a visual learner im sure its helped many people including myself.lol I may be 22, but a LOT of people do not drive stick anymore...

the hardest part for me is the pressure i put on the accelerater :/
Bearsarefurry 2 months ago
@Bearsarefurry The hardest part about driving manual is starting from a dead stop, so you're not the only one.

FYI, keeping the clutch in all the way while moving does not burn it out. riding the pedal past the friction point will.

does using the handbrake better

no the clutch dis-engages the gears from the transmission

When stopping, can you just put it in neutral first? Then hit the brakes?
crystalanddavid1 2 months ago
@crystalanddavid1 You can, but like the video explained, you might need to speed up if the light changes to green or someone cuts in front of you and you need to accelerate around them; Then you can just go instead of having to shift in gear and then go.
NicThatRussianGuy 2 months ago
@crystalanddavid1 If you put the car in neutral you're free to do whatever you want. You can do it that way. You can also just press the clutch and keep it pressed the entire time you're braking, then move to first to take off again after you stop. Or you can actually use the engine to brake by braking normally and also shifting down gears as you slow to help you stop.
ScottXC91 2 months ago
@ScottXC91 the life of your transmission is dramatically decreased when you rely on it to stop the car. thats what your brakes are for. the cost of replacing brake pads is insignificant to replacing a transmission.

@DurkBeefhammer
nah .
We are used to manual because we learn to drive with one .
I am driving manual since i am 17 . Never had an issue with it .

the worst thing is when ur on a steep hill stopped at a light or stop sign and some dumbass goes right on ur ass behind you
pablo3264 2 months ago
using the handbrake is prefered although if your feeling confident and have good clutch controll for short stops you can practice holding the car on the clutch then when its time to go just drive on no idea if it fucks the clutch up its just somethign i used to do on driving tests when i needed to get moving quickly on a hill

How can you people think Manual is hard? :P In norway we pretty much only use manual while taking the drivinglessons. Manual is easy
blackdemonpwns 2 months ago
@blackdemonpwns same for the uk its not to hard imo ok its dificult at first but sholdnt take more than a hour to get moving and a few lessons to start getting to the point where you can hop in any car and drive it without having any problems thats the major hurdle getting used to driving cars with different clutches some bite earlier some bite later some arnt fusyy some want you to be dead on its all things you learn in a reasonable amount of time i hate driving auto on my scooter its boring
reesk92 2 months ago
well when stopping i typically push in the clutch put in neutral and brake. and when you shift gears lets say from first to second i like to give 0% into throttle and 100% clutch switch gears then let it all the way out then giving it gas

so u have to hold clutch on 1st till u get revs? does it turn off if u just move forward
paskapers3 2 months ago
great vid buddy, but i got a question: how many rpm do you suggest before changing into the next gear? in my driving lessons they told me to shift from 1 to 2 at about 1500-1800 and at 1500-1800 from 2 to 3 and from then on at about 2000rpm. how many do you use? :)
Nightskybebop 2 months ago
@Nightskybebop depends on what engine your car has. i usually shift gear at 1500 and if i want to skip a gear i shift at 2000. take in consideration that if the road is tilted upwards the enigine need more rpm to be able to shift gear properly.

or instead of sitting on the footbrake and taking the risk of going back a little and hitting someone or something, why not just apply your handbrake, build up the revs, bring out your clutch til biting point and then release the handbrake.

@ugonnadieboy Completely agree, that's how I do it.
