:-) There used to be a programme on TV called Juke Box Jury with David Jacobs - and there, a certain gentleman always referred to Helen as Paul Robeson. :-(
Really? You mean that Helen was ON the Jury? If so it must have been after my time in the UK. Isn't it weird to even imagine someone today smoking away whilst on TV?! How sad for Helen - I think it must have destroyed her voice.
I can't remember the name of the guy but he was a regular.
That'd be good. We'd need some scantily-clad women gyrating to the music, of course. If you meant John Barry, I saw him out walking up the hill behind my house about 3 years ago. We stared at each other but didn't speak...

I have no doubt the artist Nellie McKay was influenced vocally by Helen, especially on McKay's song "I want to get married".

Both in the strong baritone mould.

My pleasure bedouin. Helen sings in a low voice, but in this one she really goes baritone!

(It used to upset me terribly!)

I remember the programme, but not the Robeson reference. I do remember Helen was always chain smoking on it, though.

I can remember her judging, this would be in the 70s revival of the show. It was rather out of place even then. She stopped smoking shortly after.

What a great lost talent. It's a shame she's now a religious fundamentalist.

Wow! The trumpetintro got me to think;
Shapiro, John Williams, big orchestra and a James Bond theme. Couldn't it have been something?

Of course I meant John Barry.
You should have whistled one of his tunes...
