Have you ever wondered how the captain and sailor in HMS Pinafore could be switched at birth when their 20 years apart in age? "Two On The Aisle's" Charles Gross & Leslie (Hoban) Blake find out when they enter the topsey turvey world of New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players founder and artistic director, Albert Bergeret. Pedantic. Rifles are normally carried in left hands sloping over left shoulder (unless ordered otherwise) and never swung! But then Private Willis is a Grenadier Guardsman - they have their own quirky ways!
@calvinolivercollins An extra verse was added to entertain and amuse the paying public - it succeeded. He put his hat on because he had finished his cup of tea - it was another joke. Has your voice coach put any clips on youtube? If so, please direct me to them...
Hmmm... I'm aware that changes to libretto are common for G&S to make things topical - but I'm not sure "Laborite" was totally satisfactory. It isn't as clearly adjectival as "liberal" or "conservative", and I think this play on words (the clever use of adjectives as nouns) is one of the major jokes of the original song. Nicely performed though!
@macronencer The words of the song are "That every boy and every gal that's born into the world alive, is either a little Liberal or else a little Conservative" There's no use of adjectives as nouns. To be a' little' (adjective) doesn't make sense. To be a 'Liberal' (noun) does make sense. Do you mean 'little' to be a modifier? I've lost the will to live.
I gotta agree with aaron3lee. Clearly an amateur performance, but a good one. I esp. liked the "I'll-tell-you-something, mate" gestures in verse 3 - good laugh. (I played percussionist/drummer in the orchestra when our local theatre performed Iolanthe many years ago. Now I'm a chorister (bass/baritone) and might even have a shot at this myself sometime.
iam a lyric/spinto tenor, and even though i would be smooth and tuneful with this piece, it would also be so wrong. this guy may not have a silk voice, but he sings it in character perfectly, and so it is very good.well done, i really enjoyed it.
Well spotted awtyler! When Gilbert wrote the lyrics the main UK parties were the Liberals and Conservatives, since then Labour has pushed the Liberals into third place - it was just an effort to make the words a bit more relevant to 2005.
@LethbridgeStewart Don't hold your breath. Cosying up to a man who employed a criminal without enquiring into his background does not bode well for the country. Clegg has access to 'Private Eye', perhaps he should read it to find out what's really going on! Private Eye exposed Murdoch sen and jun + Brooks years ago. Chickens come home etc.
@ronneesam My previous comment was made before the election, and thus before the highly questionable decision to go into coalition with the Conservatives. Remember that brief moment when it looked as if the Lib Dems actually had an electoral chance on their own?
@LethbridgeStewart Had the lib dems chosen Labour, they might not be in the quagmire of corruption, sleaze and revulsion which is the present government. The sooner Nick Clegg grovels to the admittedly odious Miliband the better. But hey Aesop was spot on. Bring back the log!!!!!
It was changed to modernise the song and make it more relevant to the audience. This is a common practice in G&S; the Little List in Mikado is a classic example.
The song still works better in the original form, and the appendum verse doesn't even have Gilbert's rhyming style.

Why did you add an extra verse to the play. and why is he putting on the hat During the play???? My voice teacher would not approve of this

@ronneesam I'm a little puzzled by your reply...

This is excellently sung; every word is clear so none of the humour is lost. It should be tweeted until it's the 2010 election theme song.

Liked the extra verse. Well done to whoever penned it!

Aren't the correct lyrics:
"That every boy and every gal
That's born into the world alive
Is either a little Liberal
Or else a little Conservative!"?
Why was "Liberal" changed to "Laborite"?

Yes, the English Liberal Party collapsed shortly before WWI, never to recover a national following.
