@AxelTiger I'm just a beginner, but I can tell you this: Most soldering tips are a copper core with some other metal plating on the outside. This plating protects the copper core, because it copper oxidizes fast when heated AND the molten tin in solder will dissolve copper. I actually just filed-down a tip that was ruined, and it works like new, BUT I only made about 30 solder joints, and I don't know how long it will last.
Why not just use a Hot air gun makes solder past work go so much quicker. That or could just use the flux and solder method and still be going quicker on the leads with little risk of bridgeing
@Lokivoid You don't have to worry about pins bridging I've hand soldered parts with a way finer pin pitch. The trick is you don't worry about bridging the pins just make sure the part is straight and when your done clean the pins quickly with solder wick and it will remove bridges on the pins and leave enough solder to hold the part on the board.
Definitely Solder Paste cost is much higher than Solder Wire in Weight but at the same time you can make more Solder Joints than you make with Solder Wire. Thus Solder Paste is far better than Solder Wire.
Do you think using paste is worth the extra cost over using solder wire? I have to make about 100 SMT boards with about 60 pads each, do you think its worth using the paste over the wire, even though the paste costs a lot more than wire?
if you're going to do 100 boards, you'd better off with paste and a small oven, so you can cook up many boards with all components at the same time. Just add the paste to all pads, place the components (paste will make them stick to the board) and cook them in a temperature controlled oven. could be a home electric one.
@yanava im trying to make a custom controller for my xbox 360 and i was wondering if i could use this solder paste on the pcb of the controller and heat the wires together?
This is the Paste and touch technique? I want to do this too with he small parts. But I want to use hot air. Anyone have advice to the type I will need?

can you make a fine tipped soldering iron just by filing a normal tip to a fine point or do you need a specific soldering iron?

Anyone try Solder-it solder paste from Lowes building supply????? About $3.50 for a small tube. I will try it once I get all my components together.

Oh my god, you are amazing, how could anyone possible do this work without a machine? wow, mindblowing, all 8 pins?
