I'm actually partial to Colm Wilkinson's version. I believe he was the one who played Che in the original concept album. The lyrics are a little different in that one as I recall. I'll have to dig it up.
No one; and I mean NO ONE- does or (sings) a better Che than Mandy Patinkin in the Broadway musical. I can see what D. Essex is trying to do here; good effort. This more modern version will keep the youngsters' feet tapping. But it does not even COMPARE to Mandy Patinkin on this song too.
@craig7233 what do you mean "the more modern version"? David Essex was the original Che in London, to Elaine Paige's Eva. This version was released as a single when EVITA premiered in London in 1978, preceding Mandy's Che by a year.
I love this musical, it's for the most part a very accurate portrayal of the Perons, but I have 2 major problems with it.
1. It gives Eva too much credit for Argentina's downfall, and Juan too little. Juan was the politician, Eva just followed him.
2. Che as narrator. The real Che wasn't much better than the Perons. He may have started on a good path, but power corrupted him and he was just another tin pot dictator in the end. TBC
@evaperonwasbad I would have preferred one of Eva and Juan's victims to comment on their rise and fall. I've researched all three of them, but no one has to agree with me. Just stating my opinion. Free speech, you know?
@evaperonwasbad Eva didn't just follow Peron. IN fact, I don't think EVITA gives Eva much credit. According to the musical, she becomes first lady, takes a European vacation, starts her foundation, considers the vice presidency, then dies. The real Eva became active in politics, eventually becoming the de facto vice president.. She also started the women's branch of the Peronist Party, and was the head of the CGT, the labor federation. None of this is mentioned in EVITA.
My school is doing this and where using a recording where Che is this really posh-sounding operatic tenor and I can't seem to find anyone like that doing this on here would anyone here know who that is?
David Essex is a British pop/rock star, one of the most successful of the 1970s/early 1980s. He took "Oh What A Circus" to number 3 in the UK charts in 1978. His ten UK top ten hits include 2 number ones, 1 number two and 2 number threes. Before your time?
let e without sin cast the first stone. It is amazing how judgemental people are. It is important to look at history within its context and objectively. Unless you were present and know every single detail you will be making skewed judgements
With all due respect ... Maria Eva Duarte of Peron did much to Argentina, while she was alive and was not interested, not to money, ARGENTINA currently suffers from serious social crises. EVITA TODAY AND ALWAYS ...
ok explain me this. how come so much of the country was worst off when sh died. Che guvara was in the aftermath of her monstrosity and look how andry he was all the time! anyway take away the facts add singing and romanticise about a monster and there you have evita.
Che guevara never met Eva Peron. Don't take the musical as a history lesson. She did a lot of good for women and the working classes. The musical is about as accurate as the tabloids you see waiting to check out in the grocery store
THE MUSICAL IS ACCURATE... very much so... yes Evita did do a lot of good, but the musical focuses on the means not the ends which didn't match. if you look at the facts that weren't altered by the peronists you would know that eva did do any of the things that are presented in the show... like sleep around to get up in the business. She had good intentions and did good but how she did them werent in the best ways.
and furthermore the character of Che is not a direct representative of Guevera, he represents those that share his sentiments. He's more of a narrator than anything else, which is why he keeps appearing as several random different characters... none of which are the actual guevera.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the musical is accurate, but it didn't show the true horror of Eva's evil. First of all, Eva was born in sin, and she continued her mother's sin. She broke all of the ten commandments- she worshipped her husband as a god, she did not honor her mother, she did not keep the Sabbath, she swore against God, she was definitely a murderer and a thief, she lied in her propoganda, and she coveted what rightfully belonged to the Ladies of the Society of Benevolence along with all those jewels
i thought that according to the christians everyone was born in sin, no matter what the mother did. and she did do good for the people. it's sort of hard in this world to do good to everyone and to completely avoid doing anything bad. sort of hard, if not altogether impossible.
You think you are so right but in thinking your doing the right thing you are pushing yourself father away from your goal and you call yourself a christian in god you understand no one least of all yourself
This year 2oo7 i went to the southend air show and we got there very early e.g. 7.30 to get a parking space, (the show didnt start till half one) Essex radio were there playing music over the various tannoys set up. why do some verses have the part about "sing, you fools, but you've got it wrong" and some don't?

@AngelOfMusic144 censorship. In the movie, they had to make it more favorable to Eva to film it in Argentina.

the "sing you fools!" verse and the "now who am I?" one that comes in the middle of that one. It's still good though
