Did you have any training aids, like books or dvds to do this with. My local training classes do things like, sit, stay, down, and not very interesting things, and I would love to get my mal to do things like that, I just don't know where to start.
awwwww CUTE( you should have a look at my channel and look at my sisters alaskan malamute( this is not in the video but he can, sit, lie down, shake(paw):)
nice dog ... how was he/she when you were vidoing. i got a malamute still training but very very smart dogs when there is food :P ........ stubborn but best dogs.
My mal can do loads of tricks and she is only 6 months old she can do all of this and no probs. Its all about keeping on top of it and making it fun. You can train any animal to do anything as long as you put the time and and effort in. But this mal is very good i cant take it away from the trainer and the dog. She as put the time and effort in and also made it fun for the dog. BRILL
@bastain123 mix things up and keep it fun, their alot more intelligant than most dogs i've worked with and get bored quick if they arent excersized mentally and physically.
Dog are are not play toy's. Just think if a higher life form made us perform stupid tricks like that, how would you feel then. I have four pure bread akita's I would never make them do that, I just want them to be happy, be healthy, enjoy life, be safe & live for a ver long time. I don't disrespect them by making them rollever and do stupid thigs and tease them with a chewie treat. That's stupid.
I live in Texas and lived with a Malamute for ten years. She would come inside to lie in the air conditioned house for awhile, but a lot of times liked to sun herself in the afternoon in the middle of July in 90 degree temperature. Go figure! Most of the time though, she'd find a shady spot in the yard, dig a little to uncover the cooler dirt, and go to sleep.
Also, there are lots of Malamutes in Texas; just ask Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue, who adopted my dog to me.
As I understand it, the hairs of the outer coat are hollow and
insulate the dog against heat as well as cold because, I believe, they trap oxygen. I don't understand the science of it, but that's what I've heard/read.
@clariny90 I have one, I thought the same thing as you before i got my baby Balto 3 years ago. One thing, they need to be indoor dogs because of the heat, and it is good to shave their underbelly in the summer and keep their paws trimmed to let the heat escape. I would definitely reccommend the dog, Alaskan Malamutes are THE best dogs in the world, and if you want, I can give you info on the breeder I got him through!
I had my first Mal in L.A. -- born and raised there. He did just fine, and I didn't keep him in any air conditioning at all. He would shed his undercoat completely in the summer and have very thin top coat only (looked normal, but felt thin). I wouldn't run him or be stupid in the sun/heat, but nothing different than any other dog. Just don't get a "woolie" one -- they are tons of work to maintain, and don't shed normally. Had one of those too, but in Canada.
@clariny90 well yes, the dog would pretty much adapt to the heat... its pretty warm here in croatia in the summer, and he often went to the basement cuz its cooler there... or he would come inside where its air-conditioned... but he would eventually adapt to it...
@mattgeb84 Malamutes are awesome in MA in the winter, but pretty useless from May-Sept. One used to come around the golf course I worked at in the summer and it looked like it was snowing from all the hair she would shed. Nothing a nice ice bath cant fix though. good luck, and let me know if/ when you get one. I'm looking for one myself (to hopefully calm down the maniac that lives with us now!)
one of my mal's can give me his paw :) i learned him when he was only 11 weeks old and for about a week her gave me both paws at the same time :) until one time i didn't catch one of them and he tipped over and hit his head against the wall :D since then he was too afraid of giving both so he only gives 1 :)
That is awesome, My mal is far too lazy to bother with anything like that. I have had her a year and she will won't demean herself to giving me her paw, lol
both breeds are smart. Though Malamutes in my opinion are twice as independent than huskies. My theory is they know they are big dogs and can get away with more haha. a 100lb mal vs a 50lb husky.
Stick with it! It takes time but well worth it. Do the basics also to reinforce you're the Alpha. BE THE FIRST - in the door, out the door, into the room, eating, walking etc etc. However, they do have a tendancy JUST when you thought you'd got the upper had, to test you out again, that's why I love them to bits. Training lessons should be short and big fun for both of you, or malamute will not work :))
BlueWolfofSnowStorm 1 year ago
i would really like a Malamute and have a couple of questions for you.
is there anyway possible to train it as a guard dog
does it howl at night and keep you awake
does it get fur all over the place, if so is there anyway of preventing the fur from getting everywhere, such as combing him often
are they affectionate, will he sit on the couch with you and watch tv or even sleep at the foot of your bed
how hard was he to train
i would really appreciate a response to these questions thank you
mattgeb84 2 years ago
1.) NO
2.) No, but you must provide to a dog some other activity - so both of you will sleep at night ;).
3.)Yes, all over the place - combing and cleaning :))
4.)He will sit and sleep with you, but if you need a dog just for this, you should not have a malamute - they need to run, play,..
5.)AM are inteligent dogs, but hard to train.
You should learn about positive reinforcement methods.
BlueWolfofSnowStorm 2 years ago
when you say they get hair everywhere do you mean just during their twice a year shedding season, or is it constant year round.
i want a malamute because
i live in MA, it's relatively cold up here average yearly temperature is less than 60 degrees.
among other physical outdoor activities i take daily 10 mile + bike rides and would like a running partner, also a dog to pull me around on skis,
would 10 mile+ semi daily bike rides and other outdoorsy activities be adequate exercise
mattgeb84 2 years ago
Hair during shedding. In winter months we do not have hair all over the place :).
10 mile is great, but when dog is mature - too much for a puppy.
BlueWolfofSnowStorm 2 years ago
