You are doing it the right way your are studying the Accents first than the Grammar. That's how I learned to speak English. My enlish Gramarr is not really that good but my Accent is up to par and can easily be understand by Americans and British People to some extent.

Nowadays, you can't almost hear the word "maaari" spoken especially here in Manila. It's nowhere heard or used. It is now replaced by the Spanish word "Puede". So, don't use it anymore! Good luck!

The word "maaari" is kinda old. I mean for me that is. In my generation, we usually just say the latter. Much easier. But if you want to learn it the way it's written on books, that is not bad either. :)
