I think Ghiaurov is Boris. I have to say, though, that I was very pleasantly surprised and impressed with what I've heard of Evgeny Nestorenko's Boris.
@rvaughanwilliams1988 Absolutely!!! The Shostakovitch and Buketoff versions are completely faithful to the original 1872 version. Rimsky went too far with his rewriting and transposing, etc.
That was amazing. We have Rene Pape for Boris in the Met this season and Evgeny Nikitin is covering and playing Rangoni. It will be great. But they are still young. Ghiaurov was magnificent in this part and the voice is so much better than the rest. Geez!!
I recall the 1st time I heard Ghiaurov singing this ... I played it over and over... it left me totally silent awe - then and to this day. I think I have a different recording as right at the end he utters a last 'ohh...' Absolutely incredible...
This is so touching! He understands really the accents of slavic mucis and that is what counts. Noone can beat him in this part exccept for Christoff, we miss this intensity nowadays and that is why this opera is no longer performed that much any more at the great theatres!
Ghiaurov's voice was like a fine patina accumulated over time on the finest wood. He had such a clarity of voice, so unusual for a bass where one can not often hear the inflection and pronounciation. And he had wonderful tops also. Magnificent voice. Thank you for uploading this precious gem. Do you have more?
@StefanKaradja Before people start declaring anyone one or two "the best" as Boris, remember that there has been a great procession of great bassos in this role: Adamo Didur; Chaliapin; Kipnis; London; Christoff; Ghiaurov, Talvela; Nesterenko; and Shtokolov. And I sure I've left out someone important. It's hard to declare a "best," there are only favorites.
May be "the" best Boris with Christoff,it is always difficult to choose between both of them...Maybe Ghiaurov , because of his wonderfull and beautifull voice (like a cello !!!) ...
simply amazing.

so. Grande, realmente, Grandioso.

Feruccio Furlanetto was excellent in Vienna too. But he hasn´t got this blackness in his voice.

I have the great Chaliapin singing this on CD, along with other excerpts from the opera, but Ghiaurov is pretty good too. Thank you for that.

Brilliant!
Emotionally involving on every level, rich, vibrant
sound and a incredibly sensitive portrayal from one
who could be a tad unsubtle at times such as his OTT
Mefistofeles in Faust.
Is this the famous Otto Schenk production from the
Vienna State Opera?
Thanks for passing the torch to a new generation of
opera lovers who never had the chance to lions like
Ghiaurov on stage.
