When I was a child the vast majority of heroin/morphine addicts were WWII veterans who became addicted while wounded and tossed on the street once they were out of hospital. There was no support other than their peers nor was there any sympathy from society. The bulk of hardcore addicts I encounter now have severe psychological/psychiatric disorders and society is still heartless and judgemental.
