Hearing this batman music always gives me the chills I love it, Chris Nolan needs to take what worked and bring it to his movies to make it standout and really when you hear something you can relate it to the Chris Nolan movies.
I cannot imagine not having this song to represent Batman. This song was remixed in the Justice League Episode Epilogue and its a Staple, STAPLE to Batman
anyone who thumbs this down should be shot in the face somewhere in mexico...luckily no one has, no big surprise there. even the people that just simply hate everything like this.

@NICKREAPER316 Aww, that's cute. You've never been there, and if you have, you went on /b/. That, or you've taken deviantArt's opinion of 4chan as your own.
@TyParkours What are you talking about. Both of them are a disease nest of 40 year olds passing along their drawings of 10 year old manga girls in bikinis. Have you been there? It's fuckin' nasty.
you know you started the internet atagonization. I'd probably have something to say about that but the way i see it the weight of this sin against awesome that you have commited will eventually catch up to you and be punishment enough. either that or you have no soul, in which case i don't care.
honestly the greatest Batman cartoon was Batman under the red hood..that cartoon was on par with Batman begins and Dark knight..was completely brillient''
I did like the music in Return of the Joker, but the absolute best themes came from Shirley for the cartoons with Elfman's epic theme to back her up. Not to mention the excellent job on the movie itself. It's probably my favorite Batman film ever.
This song kind of, explains how much stress and struggle Batman has been through... with his parent's death as an 8 year old... That's pretty much why Batman is so dark and mysterious.
@Anonymos1011000 spiderman's special power is getting his ass kicked. sure batman dosent stack up to people like superman who have powers, but he dosent need to. he knows almost every fighting style and is a master detective and he became a hero to instill fear into criminals.
Spoken like someone who doens't know jack shit about Spider-Man. The webslinger is able to defeat opponents who are way more powerful than him. This is the same guy who took on the X-Men single handedly and won. And as much as I love Batman, Bane broke him. And don't even get me started on Superman.
@thedepartedsoul11 He can beat the crap out of Superman, as shown in some cartoons and comics, with the help of a BatMech or Kryptonite, Batman = Superman but Batman is cooler.
@Anonymos1011000 and yet he could kick their asses. therefore the whole lack of super powers thing just makes him more bad ass. Look there is simply no way around the fact that batman is in fact superhuman. He has superpowers of the mind and will rather than the body, but they have shown themselves to be more than a match for physical powers time and time again.
This, Subzero, Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, and Mystery of the Batwoman should be put on Blu-ray with 5.1 HD DTS. I wanna say the same for the series but honestly it wasnt meant for movie quality so its just fine as it is. I been watching the series on my 42 in tv, it looks fine.
I dont think its fair on any movies to be compared with each other. Both this and Nolan's take are brilliantly put. Sometimes we have it fixed in our minds to just say one is better then the other. Personally i prefer to look at both of them from a different angle and appreciate what they have done to the Batman as a whole.
Just watched this today after 10 years....and i was blown away again. Flawless....
Good God I get chills up my spine every time from the choir, even if it is just the staff's name backwards! I still think THIS is the best batman movie ever.
@SyrianPhoenix Oh, DEFINITELY superior. Begins effed up the Batman mythos in several places, such as Ra's al-Ghul, and TDK did a terrible job of Two-Face.
@NotNamedJohn Two-face was supposed to be more psychotic than that and darker. Joker in TDK was good but it was completely off when it comes to the laugh, Mark Hamil's laugh was the best. Now the story TDK was good but THIS IS THE BEST!
Animated films, and films that are adaptations of shows in general, tend to suck so bad. This is not one of those films. It pretty much got Batman right. BTW, most kid's films don't have a randomly dead character, a love interest who never ends up with the main character, the darkness of the heroes, or as epic a final fight scene.
i would rather watch this then lots of the new super hero junk out nowadays, the soundtrack, voice acting and animationg was too crisp:D still one of the best movies ever!
This movie IS Batman. From the tragic and chilling performances of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, to the Gothic yet retro design and of course the quintessential Batman Music by Shirley Walker. Dark Knight may have been great, but it was just trying to immitate what this movie really was: Gotham's Savior, the way he was meant to be.

Really one of the most tastefully done Batman films ever made. I love the drawings. I saw this as a 5 year old kid and still love it 17 years later. Nolan's films were really good, and the original Burton film is obviously a classic but this ranks right up there, the score, voice talent, art, all top notch.
Yeah but it wasn't explain in depth. This movie tells about some girl who almost stopped Bruce from even becoming Batman and explains Bat's origin a little more than just saying he saw his parents get shot.
I got a video game idea: Heroes: Batman Batgirl Nightwing Robin Bosses in order: Harley Quinn Ra's al Ghul Poison Ivy Joker Bane Killer Croc Scarecrow- final boss That's it! Post different ideas for a name and I'll choose by comment soon! Thank you and good night!!!!
@pc8465 I think that you should pair up bosses by affiliation ex harley, then joke or league of assassins (talia, white ghost, sensei then ra's a ghul) they should definitely put the league of assassins against Batman in Arkham Asylum 2
I think Azrael was based on this character, just as this character's based on the Reaper from Year Two. Interesting fact: "Azrael" Is the name often given to the Angel of Death, and the Phantasm's catchphrase is "*place name here*, your angel of death awaits you!" Both characters have blades on their hands, and both have a "hood-and-mouthpiece" ensemble, and they appeared within a year of each other. Just seems like too many congruencies.
Sidenote: Most, if not all, live action intrepretations portray Batman as being too tough. If it seems controversial for me to say that Batmam: The Animated Series did the best job of portraying his physical strengths, AND weaknesses, than read more graphic novels, particularly Miller's DKR and Year One.
One thing I've noticed about is that they are more willing to portray Batman as a 'normal' person who can get seriously injured. When ever Bale's character gets hurt, it is because something went completely wrong or a bad guy had an unfair advantage. (Fear toxin, killer dogs, etc) The fact that Batman cannot dodge every fist, knife, or bullet easily in the show is far more realistic than one who disarms hundreds of gunmen unscathed. I find that ironic.
I love this theme. I find that it seems to fit Batman better than the others in some way. Dark, like him. Something ghoulish and frightening, yet with a hint of nobility that says that no matter how scary this thing is, it's still a symbol of hope and heroism.
I agree. Shirley Walker's theme seems to most suited for Batman. The others are great too, especially the original movie, but nothing can beat the TAS score.
I think they meant batman begins and the dark knight were the only real time movies that were good. A lot of the batman cartoons were good. Especially when kevin conroy, and mark hamill do the voices.
this intro has passion, death, hope, and desire written in all the voices singing, the bass and tenor speak of passion, and love...the alto and soprano Life and hope.. the description of the people of gotham... beautiful. this is amazing. ( imo this is what i feel when i hear it )
This movie defined my memories of the early 90s cartoons. There simply was NOTHING better then this. In fact one of the defining complements given was that Nolan partially based his idea of Batman upon the Animated series, and not any of the original movies.
That's the funniest part. The chick that was responsible for the lyrics thought it's unfair that the people responsible for the music are mostly uncredited, so she just wrote down their names backwards and handed it to the singers, claiming it was some dead language from music history books. The WB didn't figure it out until it was too late.
@malkhandos he could be numerous. like Hush for example or even zsas ( if he went really radical of course) maybe do the voice of scarface the dummy or hell even be clayflace
I was so indoctrinated into Batman: TAS as a child that even now, as an adult, I hear this theme when I think of Batman. It makes me happy inside.
Personally, I would LOVE to see the Riddler, but I think they'll go with something more like Bane. One of the less "cartoonish" characters, someone you could see in real life, just taken a bit too far.
i wouldn't mind hearing this theme for the next live-action batman film. chris nolan, are you listening??
btw, how about jeremy irons as mr. freeze? irons in the role would remind me of how freeze was in the animated series, not that horrible schwarzenegger crap.
If anything Batman Mask of the Phantasm PROVED that you can´t keep thinking that cartoons are solely a kids media who´s unable to tell something that even remotely reminded of big Hollywood story.
I just wish we would have more Batman cartoons of this and Return of the Joker´s level.
Sure Batman Sub-zero was excellent and ALOT better then batman and robin.
but it just wasn´t on the same level as this one.
But the latest we got Batman vs Dracula was a pile of shit compared to this one.
"It came from the darkness.. A flying creature of the night. A Bat. It was at that very moment that i realized my life would never be the same again.."

(Fear toxin, killer dogs, etc) The fact that Batman cannot dodge every fist, knife, or bullet easily in the show is far more realistic than one who disarms hundreds of gunmen unscathed. I find that ironic.

It's easier to make an animated film closer to the comic books so comparing it to live-action adaptations isn't exactly fair.
This was a great film in it's own right though. I loved it, I still have the tape.

One word: EPIC!

Second comes the Arkham Asylum video game score.

I think they meant batman begins and the dark knight were the only real time movies that were good. A lot of the batman cartoons were good. Especially when kevin conroy, and mark hamill do the voices.

I still cry manly bat-tears every time I see it. Batman is the epitome of the tragic hero.

Seriously, anyone who considers themself to be any kind of Batman fan needs to see this movie. One of the best Bat-movies ever.

@45andcounting
Agreed. Even though it's a cartoon, it's still one of the best Batman movies released.
vtxcpower 1 year ago
@45andcounting Yeah, they really should consider to make a script for the next Christian Bale movie based on Mask Of The Phantasm.
I dont know why but I guess Kate Winslet could do a great job as Andrea Beaumont.
Quiropiusco 1 year ago
@Quiropiusco a live action version of Mask of the Phantasm would be badass.

I downloaded this theme from ITunes like four years ago and I still listen to it! I wish they made a longer version!

This is the baddest-ass piece of music in the Batman universe - kudos to Shirley Walker and Danny Elfman before. I really wish it had been longer.

The choral chanting is just the names of orchestrators Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion and Peter Tomashek sung backwards.
lbjfan408 2 years ago
this intro has passion, death, hope, and desire written in all the voices singing, the bass and tenor speak of passion, and love...the alto and soprano Life and hope.. the description of the people of gotham... beautiful. this is amazing. ( imo this is what i feel when i hear it )

This movie defined my memories of the early 90s cartoons. There simply was NOTHING better then this. In fact one of the defining complements given was that Nolan partially based his idea of Batman upon the Animated series, and not any of the original movies.

@Barricade
back in the 90s the late gene siskel, said phantasm was the greatest batman movie ever made (up to that point).

What They singing? Can anyone put words here?
przemek892402 2 years ago
Sorry not sure, I think it's Latin.
Apophisguard 2 years ago 2
@przemek892402 it's the names of the people who worked on the film but backwards and in latin.
starkiller20293 2 years ago
@przemek892402
That's the funniest part. The chick that was responsible for the lyrics thought it's unfair that the people responsible for the music are mostly uncredited, so she just wrote down their names backwards and handed it to the singers, claiming it was some dead language from music history books. The WB didn't figure it out until it was too late.

Batman begins, maybe. Buy I'd still pick Dark Knight over Mask any day.

Yeah I agree but DK only by a little, both movies are very good.

What about Daniel Day-Lewis as the next villain? That would be awesome, not sure which villain he'd be though

Patrick Stewart as Mr Freeze. hat would be even more epic.

I was so indoctrinated into Batman: TAS as a child that even now, as an adult, I hear this theme when I think of Batman. It makes me happy inside.
Personally, I would LOVE to see the Riddler, but I think they'll go with something more like Bane. One of the less "cartoonish" characters, someone you could see in real life, just taken a bit too far.
mearaaideen 2 years ago 3
i wouldn't mind hearing this theme for the next live-action batman film. chris nolan, are you listening??
btw, how about jeremy irons as mr. freeze? irons in the role would remind me of how freeze was in the animated series, not that horrible schwarzenegger crap.
simpathy4thedevil 2 years ago
The problem with Mr. Freeze is that although he is a great character i don´t think he will fit into the Nolan universe which is more realistic build.
The Riddler on the other hand and perhaps killer Croc could work.
If indeed the it is The Riddler who gets the part of the villain i wouldn´t seeing John Glover reprise his role as the riddler in a live movie.
Erikjust 2 years ago
If anything Batman Mask of the Phantasm PROVED that you can´t keep thinking that cartoons are solely a kids media who´s unable to tell something that even remotely reminded of big Hollywood story.
I just wish we would have more Batman cartoons of this and Return of the Joker´s level.
Sure Batman Sub-zero was excellent and ALOT better then batman and robin.
but it just wasn´t on the same level as this one.
But the latest we got Batman vs Dracula was a pile of shit compared to this one.
