  • Thanks so much for posting this! We are redoing our bathroom from scratch and I was having a small leak from the new cartridge- this totally gave me the confidence to deal with this problem!

  • @jaimango1 make sure you use an OEM Cartridge not for Moen but By Moen. More expensive but dont leak.

  • Moan for Moen? LMAO. That's for sure. Reminds me of an old diesel truck I had years ago... it was an Iveco but the guys at the repair shop called them Iwreckos because they were designed so badly, LOL.

I put that Moen valve in a good 12 years or so ago figuring made in the USA? Must be ok... arg. Nice to have internet info now so you can see what repairs are going to be like before you purchase your next valve.

  • @donald1715 Good thing you watched video first.....

  • @donald1715

I had a SAAB car, same story.....

  • Ya, got the puller at HD. It went on fine, and tightened snuggly, but the process of breaking the old cartridge free? It would turn but not come free or come out... I had to pull back as hard as I could and wiggle it slightly and strain as hard as I could and it would come out 1/8" and I'd have to rest... then again and again and finally 30 min later, it came out and the rubber side panels were in pieces. Huge struggle. Thanks to your video tho, I was able to remove it without destroying it, lol

  • Getting the new cartridge back in required a LOT of sanding to the inside of the brass tube as every time I'd try to work the new cartridge back in, the new rubber panels would simply bind and get stuck and the cartridge would start sliding in past them. This Moen faucet is the worst possible design for anyone with hard water... the WORST. It's all back together now and working but wow... what a struggle. : (

  • @donald1715

Actually Moen is not bad at all, compared to some. Ceramic Cartridges are best however, not Moen. sometimes I say Moan...... glad you won.

  • Your video helped, but I'm going to guess that you demonstrated on a brand new valve, because even with the puller, it was a colossal struggle getting the old cartridge out for me. Maybe our hard water here reacted badly with the rubber panels on the cartridge? Getting the cartridge out meant pulling the cartridge past the two rubber side panels on the cartridge as they had completely adhered to the inside of the brass tube. They came out in pieces. Getting the new cartridge back in? OMG arg.

  • @donald1715 No not a new valve body, possibly 10 yrs. old? I forget. The video was not staged, it was real time. Your story is not uncommon, yes water is the killer, it contains many un speakable things. I suggest a Body Glove POU Filter for Drinking. I try to keep the videos short as possible, not including all issues, yours included. Did you use the Moen Puller that is built to pull both size Cartridges ? Greg Chick

  • I think its also worth mentioning that if you're not in too big of a hurry you can get the parts from Moen for free if your the owner. I had to use the puller tool to remove my cartridge as well but once I got it removed I couldn't for the life of me get the new cartridge installed without the side seals falling off even with plumbers grease . I went and bought a one inch flap sander disc and polished the housing a little, put some plumbers grease on it and that allowed the cartridge to go in.

  • @darley387 I prefer Vinegar, so that the inner Diameter of Body is not enlarged. But I have used emery-cloth, that is ok if you are very careful Thanks for the comment I hope others read these postings, it would be wise to do so, your experience and this "Blog" is what makes this real Greg

  • Top notch video! I'm off to Home Depot. I think I can actually do this. Thanks to responders too.

  • @g0faster47 Please let us know if the video matched your experience. If you save a lot of money please visit the Tip Jar @ DIYplumbingadvice web site Greg.

  • @ramonasplumber I must have done it wrong. When the knob points straight up (12 O'clock position), the water is off. When I rotate it counterclockwise to 9 o'clock, the water is cold. The knob stops at 9 o'clock. As I rotate it clockwise from 12 o'clock, the water starts out hot at 1 o'clock and gets progressively cooler until the knob stops at 6 o'clock. I thought I got the HC orientation right, but apparently not. I'll try again tomorrow.

  • @g0faster47 OK I got it. DOH! Rotated the knob and it works fine now. BTW it was a real bear pulling it out. I wouldn't have been able to do it without the puller. The HD guy made a big deal out of lubing the new cartridge so it would come out easier the next time.

  • @g0faster47 Was the old Cartridge in with H&C on top? I bet it was not.

  • Video was well presented, I feel pretty confident that I can do the same repair myself. We'll see how it goes!

  • @Flickerstreak Thank you, Please let us know if you had un warned glitches in the processes. I can ad them for others

  • It went off nearly exactly as described in the video. The only difference I had: the valve casing in my shower was mounted further recessed into the wall, so I had to take off the circular trim piece. This is easy to do, but replacing the screws when you're done takes a little fiddling. Make sure that the trim is properly sealed against the shower wall when replacing it. Tip to DIY-ers: you'll probably need the valve stem puller. Buy it and, if you don't need it, you can always return it unused.

  • Also note: the Moen OEM positemp cartridge retails for about $40 at big box stores (e.g. Home Depot). Generic brand is about $5 cheaper.

  • @Flickerstreak Great comment, great results, and those screws are a pain.

  • Can anyone answer this question? The part below, you know the knob you pull up to start the shower? When the shower is turned off, is the knob suppose to fall back down on its own?

  • It should drop, when it dos not, it creates corrosion and build up of minerals.

  • @ramonasplumber Are you saying it needs cleaning and then it will drop on its own?

  • @sinfuldavy0 Yes, if it is not too corroded. replacing it is a very common thing. $500 spouts exist, $35 ones work. finish costs extra. Delta makes a good one that you pull down on an outlet ring on bottom side instead of top lifting rod.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!! Thank you!!!

  • @smestel Thanks, we try to be the Webs best!

  • Extremly helpful.

  • @Brooklynyte83 Thanks, I am glad you saved money? if so the Tip jar at my DIY site is a pay happy widgit.

  • Yes it a wonderful thing. I am thankful for YouTube!

  • Thanks so much. My husband and I are very grateful!:)

  • @AskNakita I am glad to help, Watch before trying to repair is a good thng isnt it.

  • !*) degree turn and your done. Handle only . OEM stem is necessary fake spinoffs are china made and no good.

  • Hi Greg. Excellent video! your clarity helped me change the cartridge without breaking anything. I have one problem though. After completing the install, my water only stays off when the handle is pointing straight up. Could this be the symptom in which I have to turn the stem 180 deg clockwise? Thanks again!

  • My Moen isn't the same as this one. Water flows when you pull it out from the wall and goes hot and cold rotating right and left. Is there a different way to remove it?

  • @dtraer You have the older original Moen. Same method but different puller and cartridge. Get the Magnum Cart and the clip to remove before pulling is in same place. Use OEM only

  • What type of tool takes the handle off?

  • @BAJA75089 Your hand, after removing the screw under the button, if channel locks are used a gouge might be made, if so, new handle. Put lube on stem post before handle next time no sticky handle....

  • great Video! Any need for faucet grease on these valves. Thanks Again

  • @jakemir Yes If you buy OEM Moen cartridge, it does come with some in a blister pack.

  • Thank you soo much for this video.I would like to point out some differences. The cartridges in my home where very old going back to the mid nineties. I was unable to remove the hex screw in my handle as it seized after many years and I stripped the head. I fixed this problem using a cut off wheel and cutting the handle. The plumber who put this in also set the faucet back into the wall so I had to remove the plate and chip away some tiles to access that clip. Hard part was getting access.

  • Thank you very much for your very detailed instructions. I came home after working late & found my bedroom had been turned into a sauna - my shower cartridge had failed so it had been spewing hot water all day! I immediately went to youtube for help & found your video. A quick trip to Home Depot for the parts & it was repaired by my son in 15 minutes. Easiest, quickest & least expensive plumbing job ever done at my house. You're the best!

  • Absolutely the best video for replacing the Moen Posi-temp valve on the internet. Great job, and thank you,.

  • The biggest problem that I find with the Moen design is that this cartridge will start leaking into the wall long before showing any visible signs of a problem. My drywall in the room below fell as a result. My Moen was first installed by a plumber. Only 5 years later the ceiling fell. I replaced the cartridge only 3 years ago and I think this has started leaking again.

  • This is by far the BEST video on Youtube on this topic. THANK YOU.

  • We did this repair but ours was a bit more involved. We were unable to remove the screw that holds the handle on because the screw was striped. So we had to DRILL the screw out and the handle came off. Our cartridge didn't have the HOT COLD written on the cartridge so that made it a bit harder and we had to use the hole formation to try to map out how to re-install the new one.

This video gave us the basics and confidence to be able to complete this task.

    Thanks Greg Chick!

  • @6852033 I had the exact same issues no HC marking. Also the head on the hex screw stripped too much hard water. I cut the from of with a cut of wheel. I did take me a bit longer as well.

  • Thanks for your guiding, very great tip.

  • at 6 40 he's assaulting the valve!

  • If you need live online plumbing help with any plumbing project check out vpvirtualplumbing on the web

  • THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! I DID THIS MYSELF. AND I AM SAD TO SAY I WAITED MNTHS BECAUSE I THOT IT WLD TAKE TOO MUCH TIME!!!!! CAN U BELIEVE THAT? IF I HAD ONLY WATCHED THIS VIDEO MONTHS AGO!!! THE ONLY POSITIVE THING AS I SIT HERE IS,,,I JUST FINISHED FIXING THAT THANKS TO THIS VIDEO,,, AND NOW I HAVE NO DRIP!!!

  • This video was excellent! I watched it 2 or 3 times till I felt comfortable with what you were doing and the pieces involved, then I followed your instructions. $50 and one hour later my daughter's shower is fixed! The old cartridge rubber had broken off on one side and was obviously the source of the problem. Thank you for your clear directions :)

  • Thank you!!!

  • THANK YOU good sir.

  • @skillian137 I try to lead by example, you are welcome.

  • Great video. I have a master bath with a Jacuzzi tub and a separate shower stall. The tub hot water comes on in about 20 seconds and the flow seems very fast. The Moen Positemp shower takes almost 2 minutes for the hot water to arrive and the pressure is very poor. Could these shower problems stem from a faulty cartridge? Thanks again for a very instructive video. Looking forward to doing some plumbing!

  • @mbrenne72 Yes, another issue is the speed/volume that comes out of a Tub spout is more than double the amount of a shower head...if you remove the shower head you will find out if it is the head, or the cartridge....

  • @prathnanhem319 Plumbing is Love!

  • Great video. Thanks a ton.

  • @saulGjr Did you find other videos to do same thing? or is your comment based on simple observation of our video. I am looking to also know what people want in videos, either proactive maintenance or "what do I do now it wont shut off" Was your valve not flowing hot water? or dripping? Thanks for watching.

  • @ramonasplumber My valve was not flowing hot water. I had no idea what to do and did a search on google and it led me to find out my valve was bad. Then another search led me to you and I am very grateful for your how to. Your video was straight forward and simple to understand.

  • @saulGjr Thanks that is exactly what I wanted to know. I could add no hot water flowing out of my Moen to the Tag list and maybe save you a jump. Was the search phrase ???could I bother you for that? Greg

  • @ramonasplumber My search phrase was "moen faucet no hot water". Which led me to the FAQ on moens website.

  • @saulGjr Thank you so much, you help me help others, Blessings.

  • Very good video

  • @plumberx Thank you, you ought to know dont you do the same

  • What a money saver for me... I went through lots of DIY plumbing videos to find this one. It's the best. I have the older style push/pull on/off valve, but assembly and disassembly were similar. I didn't buy the puller device, but would have made it easier. I just applied pressure to it and once it broke free from whatever it was binding on, it came right out. Couldn't find OEM valve for it at HD or Lowes. Plumbing supply had sign on door, "Licensed plumbers only" guess they don't want my biz.

  • @turbowarp Glad the process worked, you can get OEM Magnum Carts from Moen! possibly free..... sorry for the Plumbers trying to save the industry, it is tough on everyone! Plumbers too.

  • @ramonasplumber Thanks again... after putting it in, it looks like it drips about a drop or 2 an hour. Will this clear up? Should I try to reseat the valve or is the problem the import valve? What's your best guess?

  • @turbowarp What is your water pressure, I have a video on that, you need to check it. ,,, I would like to take a punch at the import valve, but better check the pressure first.

  • @ramonasplumber My house doesn't have a pressure/check valve... I've seen the gauges that screw onto the hose bib. I'll get one and check it out. Thanks.

  • I just wanted to thank you! I've been taking cool showers for a month and it's cold here. I had no idea what to do. I watched your video, got my screwdriver, and I'm about to take a shower nearly hot enough to make coffee! Yeah!

  • @sasto65

Thanks, subscribe to my site and learn PROACTIVE measures to stay on top!

  • This might be a silly question. But are there many types of cartridges for all the different type of Moen valves? Would I have to find the manual to locate the model number for the cartridge or is it engraved somewhere on the valve itself. Also, if the cartridge refuses to budge, if I purchase a puller, it should work? I didn't want to tug too hard because I didn't want to break or do something to the pipes. The problem with my shower is that I get no cold water. Just scalding hot water...help!

  • @BarelyPeach

Peachy Look at the video again. if your valve is a positemp, that is what you get a cart for. Posi temps turn to operate, old style push / pull and turn right and left. the puller you need is specific to each one. How old is the house? valve?

  • Greg, thank you so much for posting your videos. I am a first-time home-owner without much experience when it comes to home repairs. One of my upstairs bathrooms had no hot water. ARS quoted me $225 + tax to have the "cartridge" replaced. While doing research online I stumbled on this video which encouraged me to do it myself. Bought a new cartridge and puller (about $55 total) and with your video playing on my ipad right next to me I managed to replace it in less than 20 minutes. Thank you!!!!!

  • @greenmotion I am glad to assist, please subscribe and learn to be proactive! and not reactive on Plumbing issues.

  • Details.........such a hassle. your lucky your wife didnt say "is it plugged in?"

  • Greg, the problem is solved. The fix was to open the water shutoff value completely and water now flows thought the shower head as expected . There wasn't enough pressure to force the water up into the head.

  • Great Video! After installing a new 1222B cartridge, was able to take one shower and all seemed fine. During the second shower, all flow to the shower head stopped. Removed shower head, checked the spout, pulled the cartridge but found no reason for the problem. Still no flow. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • @jeff517able I sent you an answer, call me, 760-788-2889...

  • Hey Greg, my shower turns on the water by pulling the handle straight back and it turns the water off by pushing it back in. This Moen you demonstrated turns the water on by turning the handle.

Does mine have a different type of valve? What's it called? I think the brand name on mine says Price Pfister. Thanks for your help.

  • @roughrider119

Price Phister makes a valve where the collar under the handle un screws, then the cartridge pulls out (no clip) Avante is the style cartridge. Use OEM no puller tool needed

  • @ramonasplumber Thank you very much Greg. The videos are great, learn a lot from watching them.

  • Terrific, clear demo. Thanks.
