I cried my eyes out watching this documentary...so foolish but brave at the same time, You can tell he was scared and lonely and sorry for what he's done.He DESERVED to get home after the tough time he had. I will not soon forget this man and what he had been through. RIP Andrew McAuley
It's very, very sad for him and so tragic for all his family and his son. But sorry to say that he didn't make it - he nearly made it. If you think he made it I think you're in denial. Yes, he made it to NZ waters. If he made it to NZ landfall we would not be mourning his passing. R.I.P. Andrew McAuley
Im gonna say he made it.... NOT BECAUSE I FEEL BAD but his mission was to get to new zealand? and what did he accomplish? he got to new zealand. he may not have stepped on actual sand but he made it to the new zealand area
Solo accross the Tasman Sea in a kayak 1,500 miles? I didnt think it was humanly possible but this guy showed us it can be done. He made it to within 20 miles of New Zealand so he made it. I just wonder why they never found him he was in a dry suit and a life jacket? What a brave person. His son will know he had the bravest dad on earth. RIP Andy.
i watched this entire documentry when i was in sydney, austrailia at the maritime museum, but since then i not been able to find the entire film to watch again.anyone know where i might find it?
i find it very strange that people think this man is a hero. he went against the warnings of experts, and perished because of it. he was a selfish man who couldn't see the wood for th trees. no thought whats so ever about leaving his son and wife. who paid for the massive rescue attempt?
you're a fool, no thought whatsoever, you know nothing. obviously you're not the adventurous type otherwise you'd understand the basic risk vs. reward philosophy.
but as i watched the film i couldn't help thinking that even Andrew may have regretted his last adventure - when i says into the camera that he will never attempt something as extreme again
i watched the film with my 6month old daughter in my arms and it made me understand that my place is with my family, not out there, where death waits for us all
its amazing how upset people get when someone disagrees with them. No wonder there are so many wars going on. I think you are looking at it from a very rational level, which is fine but humans arent all that rational. The have fears and desires and lofty goals as well as a need to push the limits of being a human, which is what he did.
i find it strange to think you have a life/ any friends. coast guard is a government funded organisation which i hope never wastes their time if you ever go overboard. if people never went against the advice of experts, the human race would never discover new findings about our existance......experts once thought the world was flat......
Wave to daddy hes just off to try kill himself for erm, erm.......We crown fools as heroes and are blind to all around us... Great documentary though.
Take a look at the Screaming Trees vieo I posted for Andrew. the lyrics match his plight very well. It's at the bottom of this page under responses to..
In one part it says, " I told a lie, that's what I said. I told the one you know I'll always keep" It has been said that Andrew knew alot more about the danger than he told his wife. In one video you can see Andrew weeping as he heads out. He already knew he had made a mistake that would have sever consequences.
I saw the same documentary on BBC2, Balls as big as coconuts man, had me in tears as the programme unfolded. You need blokes in the world like this. An absolute hero.
I watched a documentary on Andrews trip with footage from his journey last night and it has totally haunted me since. He was a true adventurer...his wife and son paid dearly for what made Andrew so special.
What most people do not seem to understand is...that a humnan has one short life and you have to live it the way that you feel you are meant to live it. Excuses of any kind, do not mean crap....live your life to the fullest, if you live to be 100 years old, guaranteed...you did not live your life to the max. Stop making excuses and judging people and live your life, I cannot stand judges and cry babies.
