  • Where would Marvel be in the 80s without John Byrne?. He was THE artist in the 80s. Loved his work on Fantastic Four, Alpha Flight and of course the Xmen.

  • @Silverbirch4444 Right you are! Marvel would have looked much different THEN, and maybe even TODAY, if not for Byrne's work.

  • @MANOKSA I can see that Byrne artwork tried to resemble Buscema. I've read marvel since the early 70s and I can plainly see that Byrne doesn't reach the level of both John and Sal Buscema. Kirby's artwork was quite blocky and todays marvel characters have a glossy unrealistic skin tone as well as unrealistic body proportions. There is nothing remarkable about todays Marvel comics, they look overly polished but with very little detail.

  • Living legend John Byrne.

  • Very neat!

  • growing up and reading tons of comics in the 80's i loved Byrne's work. great art and story telling. his superman run's were some of his best.

  • @deadling13 Yes, Byrne did a great job on the Superman series of the 80s. There is a giant size D.C. issue from the late 70s I believe titled " Superman VS. Shazam " where Superman was penciled to look like Reeves. Byrne's Superman looks very similar to the Superman penciled in that issue.

  • @chroniclerofthe70s I have that Superman/Shazam throw-down. I'll have to take another look at it for the Reeves resemblance. Thanks for the heads-up.

  • The man, The Myth, The Legend, The 80's!

I had most of his stuff at once point, even the indie stuff which was great.

  • Oh, yeah. Comics-wise, I LIVED for Byrne's work at one point. It could be argued that he helped start two trends in the comic book business: that of the writer/artist, and of the superstar talent, earning bigger-than-normal bucks.

  • Nice! 5 stars and thanks for posting this.

  • You're welcome. Byrne does tend to get hammered pretty well by certain elements of comics fandom. I've never been sure why.

  • Thanks, I dont think JB get the respect he deserves. In my opinion he has probably contributed more to the medium than any other artists/writer in the business...
