  • Have the utmost respect for the scots...R.I.P. Mr. Millin

  • A great Canadian....Piper Bill...Unforgettable....

  • Now that's what you call a Scot .

  • To me, this man is the essence of all those who took part in the D-Day landing. Heros, one and all. May what they accomplished never be forgotten.

  • Rest in Peace Bill Millin.

  • Thanks Mr. Grosser for this. Good video, great man.

  • Legend!

  • May lord god bless the veterans of World War 2 deceased and still living my great-uncle Fought in the war and was the only one to see action but missed the landings though I bet if he had ever heard this story I bet it would blow some of his stories out of the water. God bless that mad bastard as the paratrooper sergeant put it so subtly.

  • Balls of steel. Absolutely amazing.

    R.I.P.

  • aye that man was a great bagpiper and soldier. R.I.P

  • He boosted the morale of thousands...

  • Rest in peace big man, you are a true Scotsman.

    Respect

  • A wee bit too early in the morning to rely in a way that is fitting to your great post. All I can say at the moment is a very big thanks for uploading.

  • SUPERB-A tear to my eye,We use the term Hero very loosely these days .Bill Millin RIP-A TRUE LEGEND!!!!!!!!!

  • My dad Jim Leask landed at Sword Beach with Bill Millen.I have a picture of the landing with Bill looking out to sea and my dad's on his left facing front.

  • 0:27, "der verrückte Dudelsackpfeifer" actually means "the crazy piper".

Verrückt, means crazy, but it has a weak negative connotation. It even can be to good at something.

    Mad, sounds way too negative.

  • Amazing guy!! Huge respect! Greetings from an Aussie live in New Zealand :)

  • Thanks for a great video Duncan.I'm a volunteer at Dawlish Museum and was lucky enough to watch your dvd 'The Commando Years' and its very good.I was privileged to have met Bill several times and my son made the interview in 2008 that you can view on youtube. The hardest battle we have here at the museum is convincing the public and press alike that we have Bills famous D-day bagpipes and other memorabilia on display here so if you can help spread the word we'd be most grateful.

  • It really makes you wonder if there is a god. I mean, this unarmed man just walking and playing didn't get shot while others with weapons to protect themselves get blasted out of their boots.

  • Duncan, this is certainly one of finest tributes to "Piper Bill" on YouTube. It has documented narration, full film clips of the landing, Millin's picture and voice, as well as your personal connection with the project. Three cheers for you, your father and Bill Millin! I will always be thrilled to hear "Black Bear" and "Road to the Isles".

  • The Scottish are already Ballsy enough, but BLIMEY!

  • @Shadowfang3000

Bill Millin was a true Canadian prairie lad....and a hero...

  • I am in the U.S. and finding it hard to find the "Invasion", Bill Millin's book.

I would like to give it to an old piper who just recently broke his hip. It would be great gift as he gets better. If any one knows please email me at elf610@msn.com

    Thank you

    Martin

  • My Uncle (actually Cousin) Simon Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat, doubtless now reunited! R.I.P.

  • RIP Mad Piper!

  • R.I.P Bill bravest man ive ever heard off!

  • Absolute Legend, why are schoolkids not taught about heroism like this ? Only the Brits Mate, Only the Brits.

  • @rickxlcr only scots mate,only scots.

scottish done this far back the the battle of balaclava.

(against the russains) and way further back

  • @ranbrent There were a few English and Welsh at Balaclava as well, and I am of Scots descent myself

  • @rickxlcr i know there was alot of welsh and english but im stating how far back and in any place the scots played the bagpipes in war

  • @ranbrent Ah yes I see what you mean, indeed my own late Uncles regiment, The Black Watch, fought at Balaclava, also the 93rd foot who formed the famous " thin red line "and who later amalgamated with the 92nd foot to form the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders,

  • @rickxlcr That's nice to know.

  • Thanks for this Mr. Grosser.

And rest in peace, Bill Millin.

  • Marching up and down a beach and playing bagpipes while wearing a kilt during an invasion: huge balls. Makes me proud to be even part Scottish.

  • My respect and gratitude to your father and all heros to whom we owe our freedom

  • Well done and thanks so much for posting. I hope that those who see this will understand a bit better why the skirl of the pipes always tugs at the heart of a true Scot. I'm glad that Bill Millin lived to see the impact that his answer to the call has made.

  • He was there for it all, playing. RIP.

  • Truly a legend - RIP Piper Millin

  • rip and might be irrelevant but damn! what a great accent scottish people have.

  • One true hero has gone. RIP

  • I'm proud to have met Bill during the making of this film. We chatted and viewed film clips together. He gave me a signed copy of his book, and a signed copy of the famous picture of the commandos on Sword Beach. He was a dear man and a pal of my father's from all those years ago. I met him just once, but I knew him all my life. The smile on his face when I showed him the film clip of him marching with my father is an image I will always remember. The film is a tribute all those great men.

  • @DuncanGrosser

A great tribute to Bill. Thanks Duncan and RIP Bill.

  • @DuncanGrosser And this is a tribute to you. Thank you, sir.

  • Rest in peace amazing Piper Bill Millin

  • My late father landed on Sword Beach with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He told me that nothing could fire a Scotsman up more than the sound of the pipes.

Bill was the only piper in the first wave but the KOSB's had their piper who played them on the road to Caen, Those in command tried to ban the pipes but most regiments ignored the order.

  • R.I.P Bill Millin

  • RIP, Bill. Time to return to your regiment.

  • R.I.P to the legend " PIPER BILL "

  • thank you for this video!

  • I'm Afraid the Piper has Died a Peaceful and Honorable Death on this day 17th August 2010 aged 88 God Rest His Soul

  • ddaypiperbillmillin blog will inform you about the project of monument, figuring a bronze statue of Bill Millin as he was june 6th 1944 at Colleville Montgomery Calvados Normandy France. Make it know around you. Bill is a legend, a very humble man who accepted that monument to pay tribute to fallen comrades. In France, UK, USA, people who feel concerned help to try raising funds.

  • according to my bad hearing I don't understand all in the video I'm afraid

  • How old is Mr Millin today..... I hope if He's alive He still have a good life with Pipemusic

  • Thats interesting , I know how you felt when you found that film of your Dad because I found a picture of my Dad who was in the 8th Royal Scots on the internet showing him moving up the line in Normandy 1944 , somehow you just know dont you that its them.
