William 'Bill' Millin (14 July 1922 – 17 August 2010), commonly known as Piper Bill, was personal piper to Simon Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat, commander of 1 Special Service Brigade at D-Day......
May lord god bless the veterans of World War 2 deceased and still living my great-uncle Fought in the war and was the only one to see action but missed the landings though I bet if he had ever heard this story I bet it would blow some of his stories out of the water. God bless that mad bastard as the paratrooper sergeant put it so subtly.
A wee bit too early in the morning to rely in a way that is fitting to your great post. All I can say at the moment is a very big thanks for uploading.
My dad Jim Leask landed at Sword Beach with Bill Millen.I have a picture of the landing with Bill looking out to sea and my dad's on his left facing front.
Thanks for a great video Duncan.I'm a volunteer at Dawlish Museum and was lucky enough to watch your dvd 'The Commando Years' and its very good.I was privileged to have met Bill several times and my son made the interview in 2008 that you can view on youtube. The hardest battle we have here at the museum is convincing the public and press alike that we have Bills famous D-day bagpipes and other memorabilia on display here so if you can help spread the word we'd be most grateful.
It really makes you wonder if there is a god. I mean, this unarmed man just walking and playing didn't get shot while others with weapons to protect themselves get blasted out of their boots.
Duncan, this is certainly one of finest tributes to "Piper Bill" on YouTube. It has documented narration, full film clips of the landing, Millin's picture and voice, as well as your personal connection with the project. Three cheers for you, your father and Bill Millin! I will always be thrilled to hear "Black Bear" and "Road to the Isles".
I am in the U.S. and finding it hard to find the "Invasion", Bill Millin's book.
I would like to give it to an old piper who just recently broke his hip. It would be great gift as he gets better. If any one knows please email me at elf610@msn.com
@ranbrent Ah yes I see what you mean, indeed my own late Uncles regiment, The Black Watch, fought at Balaclava, also the 93rd foot who formed the famous " thin red line "and who later amalgamated with the 92nd foot to form the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders,
Well done and thanks so much for posting. I hope that those who see this will understand a bit better why the skirl of the pipes always tugs at the heart of a true Scot. I'm glad that Bill Millin lived to see the impact that his answer to the call has made.
I'm proud to have met Bill during the making of this film. We chatted and viewed film clips together. He gave me a signed copy of his book, and a signed copy of the famous picture of the commandos on Sword Beach. He was a dear man and a pal of my father's from all those years ago. I met him just once, but I knew him all my life. The smile on his face when I showed him the film clip of him marching with my father is an image I will always remember. The film is a tribute all those great men.
My late father landed on Sword Beach with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He told me that nothing could fire a Scotsman up more than the sound of the pipes.
Bill was the only piper in the first wave but the KOSB's had their piper who played them on the road to Caen, Those in command tried to ban the pipes but most regiments ignored the order.
ddaypiperbillmillin blog will inform you about the project of monument, figuring a bronze statue of Bill Millin as he was june 6th 1944 at Colleville Montgomery Calvados Normandy France. Make it know around you. Bill is a legend, a very humble man who accepted that monument to pay tribute to fallen comrades. In France, UK, USA, people who feel concerned help to try raising funds.
Thats interesting , I know how you felt when you found that film of your Dad because I found a picture of my Dad who was in the 8th Royal Scots on the internet showing him moving up the line in Normandy 1944 , somehow you just know dont you that its them.
Have the utmost respect for the scots...R.I.P. Mr. Millin

0:27, "der verrückte Dudelsackpfeifer" actually means "the crazy piper".
Verrückt, means crazy, but it has a weak negative connotation. It even can be to good at something.
Mad, sounds way too negative.
